Ubuntu :: Download Error - Installation Cancelled In Unfriendly Way

I was downloading some PHP and MySQL tools, and one of my downloads was not going anywhere. So, I restarted my computer, and now it gives me an error when I try and download it again (see below):
Message:
"The installation could have failed because of an error in the corresponding software package or it was cancelled in an unfriendly way. You have to repair this before you can install or remove any further software."
I started seeing error log entries to this effect once we ported a Tomcat webapp, which connects to a remote database, from Tomcat 5 to Tomcat 6.0.26, but it seemed relatively harmless until now. The error we got at first was:

SEVERE: A web application appears to have started a TimerThread named [Timer-7] via the java.util.Timer API but has failed to stop it. Whenever vlc is running and I try to log out, a KDE window opens and tells me "logout cancelled by vlc". I have to repeat the process. How do I disable this unwanted "feature"? What if Thunderbird, Firefox, LibreOffice, Gwenview etc. all decided I shouldn't log out? Would I have to log out six or seven times? Doesn't sound logical to me.
I've been scouring the internet and these forums for answers and have yet to figure anything out.Here's the situation: My boss's computer (HP running Vista) decided it didn't want to boot anymore. (Error: Cannot find Bootlog.xxx) My boss used a recovery disk to attemp a 'repair' but unintentionally began a format cancelling it at 1-3%. I created a LiveUSB that I can boot off of, and Ubuntu recognizes 52gb of Data on the drive. However when I go to view the drive nothing is there. I am assuming that the 'page file' was deleted although the rest of the information wasn't.
My question is: Is there anyway to access this data although the information telling the computer what is there and where it is has gone AWOL?I'm trying to get the payroll information off of the computer so she can finish her taxes, I will be working on this all night. Last week, the little orange triangle that tells me I have updates to install turned up. When clicked, I got the Update Manager and when asking it to check on what's available it tried to download 70 some items, but stalled on number 47. I got a message: "Could not download all repository indexes." The box below contained a list of files, such as: "http:/security . . . etc." At the bottom of the list was the statement: "Some indexes failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead." From there all I can do is back out of the Update Manager. The orange triangle remains, and I get the same result when I click on it.

I upgraded my ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 after its release. It was working fine. But today I saw its giving an error while upgrading. I am not very much efficient in ubuntu so cant understand why this error is. It is giving as failed to download repository information. check your internet connection. But my internet is working fine.
I am a new ubuntu user, I downloaded it because it was recommended over windows for programming uses. I am new to Ubuntu, and everytime I try and download something from the Ubuntu software center an error pops up saying: "Requires installation of untrusted packages. The action would require the installation of packages from not authenticated sources." It does this for everything I try and download.
My problem is that I am unable to do a routine upgrade of packages. When I try to perform an upgrade, the following occurs:

I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 but "whenever i try to download or install any software from 'Ubuntu software Center'it gives error: "Failed to download Package Files Check your internet Connection" Internet is working fine!I've also tried the command: "sudo apt-get update"
Here at home I have several Ubuntu installations, mine, the kids computers and a couple of laptops. What I'm looking for is a solution or a pointer in the right direction to setup on our local Ubuntu server a sort of cache. Each day each Ubuntu on the network, checks for updates and downloads, and installs. What I'm looking for is a way for one machine to download the update and then the others to download from the local resource.
A sort of local cache to try and minimise everyone downloading straight from the net for pretty much the same updates. I did a emerge cache many years ago when I was using Gentoo, so I'm wondering what I can use/do here with Ubuntu as we are all loving this distro now.

This is our first time choosing and installing linux. Our other servers are all windows 2008 x64. We were told to install fedora 13. I can only find a download for the desktop version and we're looking for the SERVER x64 download. Could I please get a link?
Why is it that I kept getting error messages that basically were saying that could not connect to the Ubuntu servers to do download of updates to Ubuntu that is until I switched to the MAIN ubuntu server at which point it worked fine.I tried several of the Ubuntu servers other than the MAIN server and kept getting error messages. Is there some problem with those other servers ?

I am trying to download all the Heroes graphic novels off the nbc site. Originally I was downloading them via the provided links but with ~170 pdfs to download it was going to take a while I used wget to start downloading them a bit faster, I tried the command

I have a link to a pdf file, and I want to use wget (or python) to download the file. If I type the address into Firefox, a dialog box pops up asking if I want to open or save the pdf file. If I give the same address to wget, I receive a 404 error. The wget result is below. Can anyone suggest how to use wget to save this file?

I'm attempting to download the DVD Install ISO for Scientific Linux (Red Hat with some additions for science) to my PC-Laptop external USB Hard Disk, but the download keeps failing near the end.
My PC-Laptop is running Vista 32bit, and the external HD is a 500GB wallet sized Buffalo HD with 400 GB free. I'm no PC sys admin - but the Scientific Linux file is over 4GB in size and I wonder if this might be a problem if the HD is formatted as a FAT32 rather than an NTFS disk (if that's the correct terminology)?
The Windows Vista download window says that I've run out of space on the HD, even though I haven't.
Note that I can't think I can download this as multiple CD's rather than a single DVD distribution - because I'm trying to install this Scientific Linux in Oracle(former Sun) Virtual Box and I'm having difficulties understanding what it wants and was advised by someone to download Scientific Linux as a single iso to burn to a DVD (in the hope that Virtual box will see it for installation in the DVD drive) - but as said I'm unable to even download the DVD installation file.

I have 2 Ubuntu CDs, the alternate x64 and the desktop x86. I've inserted both and still gave me the same error. The computer is running the alternate x64 version. I've already reinstalled this computer 4 times, and it NEVER asked me for the CD. Why would it ask for it now? Not only that it asks for a CD I don't have.
