Ubuntu :: Downgrading - So Many Bugs In Final Release

May 11, 2009

This is the first time in two and half years of using Ubuntu that I've had to decide to downgrade, pretty disappointed that there are so many bugs in a final release, especially the more irritating bugs such as:

After alt+tabing I can't type sometimes (I've posted about this before), after a clean install problem still persists, I alt+tab a lot so not being able to type without minimizing my window is irritating

compiz + jaunty issue of assigning a key to bring up a terminal. The bug has been confirmed but if there is a fix, it wasn't put out with the release and requires tampering (usually I'd be okay with this but coupled with the other issues I see no point in wasting time)

nvidia card with twinview - with every prior release nvidia-settings worked flawlessly with twinview. Now the biggest issue is that when I fullscreen something it takes up both screens (such as a movie), when I am trying to work on one monitor and run a movie on another one I can't fullscreen because if I do it takes up both screens. I never have had this issue with a prior release.

I guess there is a first time for everything. I'm downgrading my system as well as my girlfriends because of the known intel graphics problem (I've read the wiki's about why they chose the driver but....a final release of an OS should not contain beta/experimental drivers that freeze up a computer set as a default).

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade Option To Go From RC To Final Release - Right?

Apr 27, 2010

I installed the RC of Lucid on an old AMD X2 5600 w/4GB DDR2 ram, and put it in the other room and installed LAMP on it to use as a local development server. It works beautifully over the network.

1. There will be an upgrade option to go from RC to final release, right?

2. When upgrading, will this kill my LAMP install? I really don't wanna go from scratch now that I have it all up and running with a load of CMS systems installed for test environments

Once I got to the installation screen and attempt to install ubuntu on my hard drive it goes blank for a few moments, and a wall of text floods my screen and it stops installing.

CentOS 5 :: Backup And Restore On 5.2 Final Release?

Mar 31, 2010

We have a linux server (centos 5.2 final), with postfix smtp server, webmin, usermin and sugar crm
We need to backup all the data, and then perform a restore on a clean machine, without any OS installed yet.

I look into many pages that says that doing a backup on linux it's as easy as pack all the files in a .TAR file. Unpacking the tar will restore the system to it's original state. Also, i'm confused because if we perform a backup and mysql has active connections, perhaps the database would be inconsistent or corrupted. In the restore step, do i need a live CD in order to boot up linux command prompt? Can it be from any linux version, or only centos version?

Debian Multimedia :: Gnome 3 Final Release To Repositories?

Mar 22, 2011

I am wondering about when Gnome 3 is released, how long until it's in the "stable" repositories?I have generally used Ubuntu, but I don't like the Unity interface they are pushing out in the next version, so I am greatly considering simply using Debian. Debian also is my first consideration because Ubuntu is based off it.But, I want to try the Gnome 3 interface first. I already have Debian installed and updated, and am now simply waiting on the GUI.

Software :: Picasa 3 Will Not Open Up In Fedora 15 Final Release?

Jun 19, 2011

I have tried to run Picasa 3 (beta) and version 2.7 in Fedora 15 installed from rpms and get the same results.

First of all - [gary@FedoraCore15 ~]$ uname -r 2.6.38.8-32.fc15.i686.PAE F15 is a fresh install, no preupgrade etc. Dual core processor, 6 gigs memory 2.5 TB

At first I got an SELinux alert, troubleshooter gave me three options. I followed the last option, I believe I set a policy for wine-preloader only to mmap low memory. These were the commands I got from the troubleshooter:

[root@FedoraCore15 gary]# grep wine-preloader /var/log/audit/audit.log | audit2allow -M mypol
[root@FedoraCore15 gary]# semodule -i mypol.pp

After this I got no errors from SELinux or anywhere else, but no Picasa. If I run Picasa from a terminal I get the following: [gary@FedoraCore15 ~]$ /usr/bin/picasa

/usr/bin/picasa: line 189: 3186 Segmentation fault (core dumped) "$PIC_BINDIR"/wrapper check_dir.exe.so
/usr/bin/picasa: line 248: 3298 Segmentation fault (core dumped) "$PIC_BINDIR"/wrapper set_lang.exe.so
[gary@FedoraCore15 ~]$

Fedora :: Lyx Bugs Or Window Manager Bugs?

I find that the FC 15 Xfce spin will save the user's current session except that it doesn't save what is being done with the Lyx editor. Under FC 15 Gnome 3, I found that after I added the minimize-maximize-close buttons to the top of windows, that some of the windows in Lyx (such as the one that appears for View as DVIPS) didn't respond to those buttons. (I don't remember whether Gnome 3 saved the Lyx session and I've gotten rid of Gnome 3 now.)

Ubuntu :: Downgrading Gcc On 9.10?

Feb 11, 2010

I need to work on CUDA, nVidia's API for GPU development. The gcc version it requires is one step below what 9.10 provides, but it works on 9.04

I understand it ultimately comes down to installing the appropriate packages, changing symlinks of gcc and to point to the correct version.

So, is there an "official Ubuntu way" to do it? As in, is there some transitional or script that does it all?

(The reason I am asking this is, generally whenever I do something like this on my own, it ends up breaking something somewhere, but if there's an official way to do it, it plays well with the rest of the system.)

General :: Downgrading Ubuntu 9.1 And Revert Back To 9.04

Nov 1, 2009

I upgraded U. 9.04 to 9.1 over the net a few days ago and got stung by the 'Driver' issue. Namely, my nvidia card is not reconciled and as a result, the monitor remains blank. I am assuming that the remainder of the upgrade went o.K. though I can only follow the boot sequence on the monitor during the bios start up.

I have a live disk of U. 9.04 and want to revert back to it, preserving my data. When I put in the disk and am hopefully asked if I want to "Upgrade", will it work in reverse, so to speak. I understand that there is a problem with compatible libraries etc. but will it ignore this and simply replace the new with the old?

Ubuntu :: Various Bugs After Unlocking?

Mar 3, 2010

I am running the x64 version of Ubuntu 9.10. For the past 2 days(haven't installed any new programs within the same time frame). I've started to encounter problems after I lock my computer, (ctrl+alt+l), then come back and unlock it. After unlocking, I am unable to open any programs.

Attempts to open programs include: panel icon buttons, application menu buttons(including opening nautilus through the places menu), alt+F2, and using gnome-do. I also can't use any of the buttons in the user menu to the far right to log off or shut down the computer and am forced to hold the power button to restart my laptop. I am able to use programs that are already open with no problems.

Also, If i lock the laptop again, the screen darkens as expected, except, when i move the mouse to bring up the login dialog all i see is short flickers of my mouse as it moves around a black screen.

My most recent synaptic log includes:

Quote:

Ubuntu :: Lots Of Bugs Going On With 10.04?

May 20, 2010

Recently while at school, my trackpad stopped working completely. When I log out to my login screen it works, and as well as kde. I use compiz btw in gnome.[SOLVED I THINK] --> My boot splash doesn't show up until its fully loaded and won't show in the correct resolution.Every so often, the UI flips out and won't let me click menus or text fields or use my keyboard at all.

The trackpad is a setting i bet. BUT I looked everywhere for a setting that is making it not work.[SOLVED I THINK] --> The splash is ok, I'm not worried about it, but I wished it looked nicer on my computer D:The UI freak out is annoying and trouble some as it happens randomly in use.

I am on a laptop:

HP Pavilion dv9000
Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo 1.73GHz
NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600
2GB of memory

ps - I am not a fan of HP, Intel, or NVIDIA, this laptop was free so not complaining about not having AMD or ATi or another laptop brand

General :: How To Fix These Two Ubuntu 10.04 Bugs

Aug 17, 2010

1. Bug one. For some strange reason, my mouse is red only when hovering over a firefox window. All the other time, its white. I have tried to use the built in cursor changer thing, and it seems only capable of changing the cursor for the desktop. Not this strange, magical red firefox cursor. It starts to mess with ya.2. Not really a bug I guess, just a mild annoyance. In windows 7, you have a good deal of play when it comes to where you want to position your icons on the desktop. Not so with Ubuntu 10.04. Its more like windows 95 when it comes to that. Is there some way to solve this? You have like an inch between places you can move icons to. Makes the desktop look ugly, and I would just feel more at home if I could position them correctly. The pic is an accurate representation of this. On the far left, that is as far as the icons can go. And if you want them near each other, they have to sit way too close, or way too far apart. (oh and that pic was before I attempted to change the cursor lol. Now its white when not hovering over FF, red when over FF. Now I'm stuck in that configuration lol)
