Jan 13, 2010I have Ubuntu 9.10 dual booting with Windows7.My ext3 /home is mounted as F: in windows.I share a firefox profile between them so that when i am in Windows my firefox uses the same profile as it does when in Ubuntu.It all worked great until recently. I am unable to save files by right clicking and save as. In the config i am unable to set a directory to save to. It neer asks me where to save to. Just nothing happens. some off my book marks are all messed up as well, my rss feeds have the same post on some random website every time i log on and i have to manually refresh to get the correct feeds back. I am unable to delete the random bookmark.

now i can select and use the new resolution - until next reboot. after an reboot 1280x720 is again not available. even if i work with sudo - the resolution isnt there....

Apr 25, 2011I have Ubuntu Meerkat (10.10) running on an Inspiron E1505. I have it setup for dual boot with Vista. I installed Kubuntu on top of Ubuntu and now have a blue Kubuntu system loading screen where it used to be purple.
I've installed a lot of programs, most unnecessarily, so I'd now like to get rid of ALL of the unnecessary programs and associated packages or dependencies. I'd also like to get rid of KDE, and any Ubuntu packages I never use.
Is there a quick and relatively easy way to do this?

Also, I want to try out other desktops so I will want to remove those (or Unity, depending on which I like better). I read somewhere that just doing sudo apt-get remove kde won't actually remove the entire desktop, so what else should I do.

I'm not sure if this is normal or not, though I know at least part of this wasted space is taken up by at least two failed attempts at creating Swap Files. Ubuntu says I have no Swap space whatsoever, so is there any way I can delete all these failed and unconnected Swap Files so that I could free up some spacend hopefully create one working one

Oct 8, 2010I seem to have a strange problem with disk usage on my linux partition. I just upgraded my 10.04 to 10.10 and I'm not sure if this was there before.My nautilus tells me that I have 1.4 GB free on my linux partition. My partition editor (GParted) tells me that 79.31 GB of my 81.38 GB is used, and I've 2.08 GB free. There's no way I've got that much stuff on my linux partition, and to confirm it, I ran the Disk Usage AnalyzerApplications/Accessories), and the total size of everything on that partition amounts to much less than 10 GB.
I've tried deleting all my trash (both root and user trash) and I looked at all the folders trying to find any suspiciously large ones to no avail. I thought it might be some weird bug, but removing some files, added the correct amount of space to the free space detected by nautilus. I have no idea what eating up my disk space.

Jun 14, 2011I'm trying to Dual-boot Windows and Ubuntu. I have Ubuntu now. I'm trying to remove space from the Ubuntu partition(Active) but, it won't allow me to remove space from active partitions. I have 11GB Free according to GParted, yet during the installation it displays only 8MB Free. Oh, and I'm trying to install Windows XP through VirtualBox. Is that possible through the install CD? I've been searching and haven't seen anything about it.

Jan 29, 2011I have had a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10 and installed some software after that.Since third some, some process is eating half of my memory.I have checked processes running in system manager but everything is normal.Maximum is consumed by compiz which is about 26 mb, seems very normal.I did restarted my computer several times, and in the start for 5 mins, its fine after that again my cpu fans runs at very fast speed and my one cpu is used up 95 % (I have dual core).Please help me out, this invisible thing is driving me crazy.I am attaching my htop screen shot (sorted by cpu %), now the cpu is not used by completely but fan is still struggling hard and fast.

Jun 1, 2010I recently installed an application called DeaDBeeF. I added the GPG key, as well as the repo in my sources.list file. I've decided to stick with Audacious, so I did an "apt-get autoremove deadbeef" to remove it and all of its dependencies. I also edited my sources.list file and removed the line pointing to the repo in which I got it from.
Now my question is, how should I remove the GPG key, if I don't use the repo or application anymore? I don't want an unused GPG key sitting on my Debian if I'm not using the repo anymore.
I've tried reading the man pages but I can't seem to get it. I've tried the following command but it doesn't seem to work.
sudo apt-key del http://hadret.rootnode.net/debian/duckbill.key

Feb 20, 2011I really don't know where to post this but my computer runs a lot slower now (amd64,athlon 11x2 235e, nvidia GeForce 6150SE nForce 430, maverick meerkat) so I have been trying to remove stuff like printers, evolution, things I have no use for but the package manager only lets me remove bits and pieces of apps...why if you remove those items will the gnome desktop have to be uninstalled too? What does the desktop have to do with emails or printing? I am from the old school...if you don't need it remove it. Some stuff I have removed is Openoffice (that really cleared some space!) and replaced it with Abiword, also got rid of Shotwell photo manager, Empathy, Bittorrent, Gwibber, Telepathy, and parts of evolution...any way to completely remove Evolution? Any other programs I can get rid of without uninstalling my desktop? And what about all those useless printer files? I ran virus scanner and computer janitor also.

Mar 4, 2011Is it safe to resize a partition which is marked as a boot partition?Is it just a flag i can ignore?I have ubuntu in an extended partition, the previous partition I've formatted and want to shrink/then move+resize the extended partition to give ubuntu more space.
I was about to resize+move from the gparted usb, when it warned moving a boot partition can cause your system not to start....I've already created 97gb unallocated space (probably too much) and sda3 is flagged as boot even though it's a formatted empty partition. If I'm trying to move/expand sda4 is the warning because of the boot partition on sda4, the facts sda3 is flagged as boot or because the grub stage 2 file is being moved?

Dec 6, 2009I've been running fedora 12 for a few weeks now and I was wondering how to clean up all of my unused files. I have accumulated quite a bit of software in the form of updates and downloaded packages since starting and I can only assume these are going to continue to build. I have rpmorphan and it lists all of the programs I'm not using but I'm wary of it because it lists WINE as one I haven't used but I use it everyday to play a game. I'm afraid I'll erase something I need, but I'd like to keep my system as clean and slimmed down as possible.

CentOS 5 :: How To Format Unused Space On /dev/sda
Dec 3, 2009I have a CentOS 5.3 x86_64 system setup as a file server, backup server, and iSCSI target. The physical machine has six hard drives, two of which (bay0 and bay1) are 1TB disks in a RAID1 mirror. Therefore, CentOS is installed on /dev/sda. My question is this: how can I format and mount the large portion of sda that's not in use right now? Here's some more info:
Disk /dev/sda: 999.6 GB, 999653638144 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 121534 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

As you can see I've got about 1TB of space on sda. However, when I look at my df -h command and my LVM management what I find is that I've got:
root / filesystem = 8GB and is under Vol00
swap = 2GB and is under Vol01
/var = 2GB and is under Vol02
Sounds like I have a ton of space on sda that I'm not using. It also looks like I'm using LVM, but I'm not familiar with LVM nor am I really comfortable with how I can use the rest of the 900+GB I have available on sda. how I can format and mount the rest of the free space on sda?
