I installed Natty Narwhal on a brand new Ideapad Z570 and everything worked out of the box except wifi for which I had to blacklist acer_wmi.
I installed Google Chrome and replaced firefox with chrome in the launcher. So everything works fine until I reboot. Firefox is back. I saw this a couple of times so I though why not just get rid of firefox. Unfortunately now there's nothing in place of firefox.
I tried unity --reset but that just shows a bunch of errors. I have dconf-tools and libdconf0 installed.
Whenever I log in, restart, etc... There are no panels shown, I have to alt+F2, open terminal and run killall gnome-panels in order to have panels shown again. Is there a way to fix this?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI find that I prefer have both panels located at the screen top. That way I don't have to go to the bottom of the screen for one thing, then back to the top for another. I arranged the panel so the regular top one is on top,then the panel that contains the open applications is underneath.The problem is, when I reboot, the panels lose their order. First, the regular top panel initializes, then the bottom ones starts and pushes the first panel down, which becomes what you see in the picture: I would like to find a way to keep them in the opposite order of what you see in the picture, but every time I reboot they end up in that order.

View 4 Replies View RelatedOn my computer I have one IDE drive that is my boot drive and a mirrored SATA raid set. When I login as "root" and mount the SATA volume it's always there. When I logout or shutdown if I login as root it's always mounted. I want to do the same thing for my own user ID. I did a search on having volumes mounted when I boot but they seem related to older versions of Ubuntu. It almost seems like a permissions problem since the "root" ID mounts the volume when I boot and my user ID does not.
View 6 Replies View RelatedIve been having some really severe problems with compiz on my computer, and Im at a point of utter frustration.
I want to take compiz off of my computer, but I do not want to lose compositing effects, because I run docky (which needs it to run)
Essentially, the problem with compiz, in a nutshell, is that it continually freezes on me when I try to scroll a webpage too fast, or if a fast-paced flash video plays, or anything that might choke up the window manager does. I end up having to pull up a terminal, killall compiz, then restart it manually; it works again until I try to scroll too quickly or something and then it will lock up again.
I know I could run compiz on this computer, but I dont know why this current version will not cooperate, so in lieu of finding a solution, I kinda want to just purge it.
My Acer laptop Travelmate 290 was fine till yesterday (ie) before full update.No Error.I have the recent Ubuntu. Later When I boot I can't find my cursor but I could randomly see pop up notification of Application----Places--- System could be read.When I open any folder its fixed to top of the screen and no button for minimise,max and close.When I dig thro all the forums and solved by reinstalling metacity and change the setting of Appearance-Visual Effects to Normal.When I set to Normal it scans for the driver and asking me to confirm the setting.Once confirmed all the above problems solved but it don't reatain it,it is jump back to none. I need to do this on every boot.Is any way to avoid this? Is anyway to clean all the compiz files and setting from the PC?I vaguely remember it may be because of uninstall of compiz.

To me it's priceless. I tried installing
Code:
~$ sudo apt-get install gnome-splashscreen-manager
~$ gnome-splashscreen-manager
All these didn't show me where to locate the existing Splash and GDM themes.
I've been to [URL] but found it hard locating the items I seek.

It's them or no Ubuntu 10.04 for me. I'm just okay with 9.10 for now

I have a couple of videos that end with the extension: .mp4.dap the videos, apparently, were .mp4 but instead are not .mp4.dap where .dap are DarkAdapted Presets File. arkAdapted is a software which applies a red or green filter to the screen to help your eyes get dark adapted.
I thought that Linux in general & Ubuntu in particular allows changing the video format by simply changing the extension name, but this doesn't seem to work now; i recall it once worked sometime ago. Am I mistaken or what ?
Getting tired of gnome, I decided to switch to kde4. I finally understand how it works (the idea of plasmoids), but I'm having some pretty irritating issues with them.
Whenever I try to move my plasmoids to another part of the screen, or even try to resize them, they immediately snap back to their original position / size.
My first thought was a permission error on my ~/.kde directory, but a quick chown/chmod indicated this is not the case.
well, I have a redhat 9 server. it has a separate hdd mounted as /backup where I always used to take the backup tar files. Now I am planning to upgrade it to CentOS 5.5 Easy job. except that I want to keep the hdd same way for backup. And ofcourse without loosing any of my existing data.
Means, the current hdd i want to again use with keeping the data because I have to restore the whole thing just from that HDD and again that will be used for the backup also like before...
so advice on adding a new HDD without loosing data. And opps, the current backup HDD is accessible through /backup and I want to keep that too... but it is not a symbolic link... here is my current /etc/fstab
Code:
LABEL=/ / ext3 defaults 1 1
LABEL=/backup /backup ext3 defaults 1 2
LABEL=/boot /boot ext3 defaults 1 2
none /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an mdadm linear array of 4 500GB drives. One of them had a few bad sectors, so I've dd'ed it to a new one (conv=noerror), and tried to start my array. Mdadm refuses, saying, "mdadm: /dev/md4 assembled from 3 drives - not enough to start the array."I had diffed different samples from different positions on the source and the mirror drive and confirmed they were identical. Checking the superblocks confirms three old drives still having their superblocks as expected, while the newly mirrored one has,
daniel@lnxsrv:~$ sudo mdadm --misc --examine /dev/sdf1
mdadm: No md superblock detected on /dev/sdf1.
- and,
daniel@lnxsrv:~$ sudo blkid /dev/sdf1

As before. The mirror apparently has no uuid, but the original does. To confirm my sanity, I did,
daniel@lnxsrv:~$ sudo dd bs=1M count=50 if=/dev/sdc of=./sdc && sudo dd bs=1M count=50 if=/dev/sdd of=./sdd && sudo diff -s sdc sdd
50+0 records in

How can the uuid not be the same when bit-for-bit from the very first byte of the drive, covering MFT etc., these two drives are identical according to diff?

I have to save the result of ssh/grep into a file to keep the eol ("/n"):
ssh $SSH_OPTIONS $USER@$NODE "cd $LOG_DIR; grep -h '$pattern' log.*" > $file
So that when I grep on the local file again later, it can be printed out with original log lines. Otherwise, the log lines will be dropped and lines becomes concatenated into a single line, e.g., if I rewrite the script in this way, echoing the $result is not a good idea..
result=`ssh $SSH_OPTIONS $USER@$NODES "cd $LOG_DIR; grep -h '$pattern' log.*"`
is there some workaround that I can save it to a variable rather than file but still keep the eol? That will simplify my script and don't need to do all those I/Os!
I have a text file of a book I want to read on an ereader. The problem is that within the file there are page numbers and headers that make it look like this: Code: But then, getting into the heat of the work, 580 ANNA KARENINA and seeing how diligently and zealously Veslovsky pulled the cart by the splash-board, so that he even broke it off... o as you can see the header and page numbers break up sentences which makes it annoying to read.
I managed to use the find a replace tool in VIM to remove the page numbers and the header and join the lines together (If anyone is interested how I did it, let me know and I can post this. Although I admit that I probably did it in a very convoluted way). So now it looks like this:
Code: But then, getting into the heat of the work, seeing how diligently and zealously Veslovsky pulled the cart by the splash-board, so that he even broke it off... But now it has joined some lines I didn't want joined (ie lines where a page break fell at the same place as a paragraph break). So some parts look like this (the XI being the number of the next section):
Code: 'A fine marsh! Veslovsky must have hampered you. It's inconvenient for two with one dog,' said Stepan Arkadyich, softening his triumph.XI When Levin and Stepan Arkadyich came to the cottage of the muzhik with whom Levin always stayed... My question is: is there a way to use an if statement or something to ensure that it formats the book correctly. For example, could I get vim (or something else for that matter) to check to see whether the line ends with a period or a quotation mark, and next line begins with a capital letter or another quotation mark and exempt those lines from the join command?
I have been using Debian for 3 or 4 years, I have never used LXDE before. After several attempts and searches through google, I succeeded to change the screen resolution to 1024x768 but LXDE is retaining this resolution for only one session: I have to change the resolution every time I use LXDE.

My current system ==>openSUSE 11.3 / GNOME 2.30.2
When openSUSE 11.4 comes out i want to
==>Download "Live GNOME"
==>When installing it need to retain contents of "/home/.."
Is this possible?
NOTE:-I don't need to retain contents of other system related directories
At school, the shop I work in has machines that run windows xp and cannot be updated to the latest SP (consider these machines "B"). This means that they are quarantined whenever connected to the network. There are also workstations that we would like to be able to connect to "B" for the sole purpose of dropping a file into a directory. These machines we will call "A" and are considered trusted.
I have No control of the school's network. I have a spare PC with two NICs as well as a 5 port switch. My thought was to use the spare PC as a gateway/router/VPN and setup an isolated "network b" consisting of all the untrusted systems. Disallow all traffic other than the VPN connection. Connect via vpn from the 4ish trusted workstations "A" to Network B. I could use mac filtering (I think) to accomplish this and disallow any computer not specifically authorized, thereby isolating the untrusted computers completely.
System won't retain 16:9 display size setting in YaST (SaX2). I'm using SuSE 11.1 (64 bit).
SaX2 settings as follows:
Monitor is Samsung Syncmaster XL2370-1 (digital). Resolution is set to 1920X1080 (1080p). Diagonal measurement set to 23 inches. Display size indicates 509 m.m. X 286 m.m. (20 3/8" X 11 1/2").
Aspect ratio is entered as 16:9, but after saving and restarting computer it keeps coming back as 16:10.
Samsung literature says 16:9, and measurements above confirm this.
So why does it keep going back to 16:10, and how can I get it to retain 16:9? (Same thing happens on another computer, also running SuSE 11.1, and with a second of these same monitors.)
