Slackware ::create & Retain Bookmarks In PDFs Across Different Platforms?

Jan 9, 2010

I use Okular to create bookmarks in my pdf files, but those bookmarks won't appear in WinXP (Adobe Reader). Same problem when I use xpdf or ePDFViewer in slackware.

Are there any tools/apps in linux which can create PDF bookmarks & retain them in other PDF viewers? I don't want to buy & use Adobe Acrobat just for this function.

Slackware :: Xpdf Is Slow To Render PDFs And Navigating Through A Document Is Ponderous

May 10, 2011

I'm the only person seeing this: xpdf is slow to render PDFs and navigating through a document is ponderous. The problem is there on my laptop ( Core i3 ) and my desktop ( Core i7 ). I played with the ./configure options in the Slackbuild and deleting the -mtune=i686 option made it much more responsive. It's so bad I've got Debian on a separate partition and I boot into that if I need to look at PDFs.

Debian :: NTFS Backup - Create Ever Expanding (to 320Gb) TAR File That Will Retain All Original File Permissions

Sep 20, 2015

I want to back up an entire Linux system on a 3Tb external Western DIgital USB3 drive.

I do not want to reformat it from what it is, apparemtly NTFS.

Is there a utility that can act like a file manager like mc, that will permit me to create an ever expanding (to 320Gb) TAR file that will retain all the original file permissions. I have had nothing but disappointment with Linux backup utils with a FAT32 external drive, and I am concerned if I just try an tar the entire drive at once, with around 3 million files, I might run out of memory.

General :: Unix Platforms And Programming Paradigms?

Oct 31, 2010

There are C, C++, Java, Perl, Python, PHP, and some other programming orand scripting languages for a Unix / Linux Distro. On a scale of 1 - 10, I rate myself on:

5 for C / C++
5 for Java
7 for PHP
2 for Perl

When I look for a Unix job I am often asked if I know C / C++, Perl or Java. Well, they mostly look for C / C++ + Unix or Perl / Python + Unix or Java + Unix combinations. That is the trend here in India. When they advertise for C / C++ + Unix they also mean Real Time System, Kernel (Modules), and Device Drivers Development. I don't know how to do those things in C / C++. But I must say that I love C / C++ and anything else no matter how attractive or easy it could be doesn't look that much challenging to me. So, which should I take now to add to my skills set and be more productive in terms of System Administration and Application Development and Support?

In C/C++ and Java, though I know them, I don't get to work in my current job. However, I often use Shell Script (Bash) and PHP and so I am finding Perl easy because the basics of Computer Programming that I learnt by learning C and C++ and Java have made it easy for me to understand any programming language.

Ubuntu :: Printing Pdfs With Evince In 10.04

Jul 28, 2010

I find that some pdf files will not print properly in 32-bit 10.04 using evince. The document is sent to the printer and then the printer simply flashes and never prints the document (I have waited an hour). The same documents *will* print quickly when I print with acrobat reader, although when using reader the the following error message appears in the terminal:

(acroread-en:3915): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_progress_set_percentage: assertion `percentage >= 0 && percentage <= 1.0' failed

The printer is a lexmark X364-dn. The problem seems particularly acute with documents that have been scanned.

When I logout or shutdown if I login as root it's always mounted. I want to do the same thing for my own user ID. I did a search on having volumes mounted when I boot but they seem related to older versions of Ubuntu. It almost seems like a permissions problem since the "root" ID mounts the volume when I boot and my user ID does not.

Ubuntu :: Get Rid Of Compiz But Still Retain Compositing

May 23, 2010

Ive been having some really severe problems with compiz on my computer, and Im at a point of utter frustration.

I want to take compiz off of my computer, but I do not want to lose compositing effects, because I run docky (which needs it to run)

Essentially, the problem with compiz, in a nutshell, is that it continually freezes on me when I try to scroll a webpage too fast, or if a fast-paced flash video plays, or anything that might choke up the window manager does. I end up having to pull up a terminal, killall compiz, then restart it manually; it works again until I try to scroll too quickly or something and then it will lock up again.

I know I could run compiz on this computer, but I dont know why this current version will not cooperate, so in lieu of finding a solution, I kinda want to just purge it.

I need to do this on every boot.Is any way to avoid this? Is anyway to clean all the compiz files and setting from the PC?I vaguely remember it may be because of uninstall of compiz.

Server :: Retain The Data While OS Upgrade?

Jun 25, 2011

well, I have a redhat 9 server. it has a separate hdd mounted as /backup where I always used to take the backup tar files. Now I am planning to upgrade it to CentOS 5.5 Easy job. except that I want to keep the hdd same way for backup. And ofcourse without loosing any of my existing data.

Means, the current hdd i want to again use with keeping the data because I have to restore the whole thing just from that HDD and again that will be used for the backup also like before...

so advice on adding a new HDD without loosing data. And opps, the current backup HDD is accessible through /backup and I want to keep that too... but it is not a symbolic link... here is my current /etc/fstab

Code:
LABEL=/ / ext3 defaults 1 1
LABEL=/backup /backup ext3 defaults 1 2
LABEL=/boot /boot ext3 defaults 1 2
none /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0

OpenSUSE :: Okular Crashes Opening Some Pdfs?

Jan 11, 2010

Like [Okular-devel]bug report okular started to crash when opening some pdf files after upgrade to kde 4.3.4 I found out that the probelm was not actually in kde but another update - at some point poppler (libpoppler4, libpoppler-qt4-3 and others) was updated to 0.10.1-1.7.1 but okular did not work fine with it any more. I solved the problem by downgrading poppler back to 0.10.1-1.4 (repo-oss) and all pdfs worked fine again. The bug report above states that newer okular would need actually newer poppler (0.12.x) but it is not provided at least for opensuse 11.1 yet.

OpenSuse 11.1 64 bit
kernel 2.6.27.39-0.2-default

OpenSUSE :: Search Through Multiple PDFs In KDE Without Acroread?

May 30, 2011

Is it possible to do the following without using the Adobe reader?Adobe Reader (acroread) has a nice search feature that allows to search for strings inside all .pdf files in certain directories (e.g. show me all lines containing the word "recursion" in all PDF files in or below directory "/papers", which gives you a neat clickable list and the sentence for each hit).I much prefer Okular for viewing PDFs, but I am at a loss on how to duplicate the above feature without acroread under linux. The KDE FindFile apparently does not search inside PDFs, or at least not in an intelligible way. I do have Nepomuk running, hogging resources, but I don't understand how to query it - if this is possible at all. So what can I do besides using acroread?

OpenSUSE :: Pdfs In Firefox Don't Display Reliably?

Jul 22, 2011

Ok this is a problem that has dogged me for years but I was hoping it was fixed in 11.4. Using the acroreader plugin pdfs sometimes work but most often they result in a white or black blank screen and once one pdf has failed then they all fail until I restart firefox. It is a huge pain - under kubuntu I have used mozplugger to display pdfs with okular in the browser but this doesn't seem to be in the repos.

I don't think it is just me, all the people I know using suse seem to have this problem but it never gets fixed. how to get pdfs reliably displayed in firefox?
