Ubuntu :: Continually Repeating Kernel Error ?

Mar 28, 2010

I have a kernel error that repeats itself every few seconds that Ubuntu is up. After a couple of hours my /var/log file is up to 625M. It doesn't seem to hurt anything, but I would like to know what's going on.

Here it is in my kernel log:

Code:

Here is its first appearance in dmseg. It repeats mixed in with other stuff untill the end of the log.

Ubuntu :: Harddrive Hdd Continually Being Accessed And Freezing 10.04?

May 31, 2011

My Ubuntu 10.04 freezes continually when it starts accessing the HDD. I will be working normally, then when i switch windows, it will suddenly access the HDD and spin up for 4 to 7 mins. I can't access anything during this period. The processor is generally only 1-5% impacted during this. I think its accessing the swap.

I admit, it's an older computer with only 2gb of RAM. Wondering how to debug this and if I should install an older version of Ubuntu to fix the issue. I've tried three different harddrives, so i know it's not errors on the disk.

Ubuntu :: Computer Restarts Before Going To Grub Screen Continually

Feb 16, 2011

I am having a re-occuring problem with Grub. The problem seems to occur about once every 15 or so times that I start up. Basically, it gets past the Samsung branded screen but before it goes to the Grub screen, the computer will restart - it just continually gets to this point and restarts until I shut down with the power button. The problem is easily fixed by re-installing Grub using an ubuntu CD. Things will then run fine for about a week and the same problem will occur.

Fedora Networking :: Atheros AR5001 Continually Asking For WEP Key - 14

Jan 16, 2011

I'm just having a bit of trouble with activating my wireless card (see title for details). rfkill - I installed it but nothing was soft / hard blocked (whatever they mean). I did the rfkill unblock command anyway but it didn't appear to change anything Tried doing it manually through system-config-network but this yielded no luck either. Basically all it does is continually ask for my WEP key, even though I've typed it in correctly a million times. why I don't have WPA2 because I do not have the ability to change it

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04/Nvidia- Continually Defaults Back To Low Graphics Mode

Jul 8, 2010

10.04 and Nvidia video card.

This sequence:

sudo apt-get purge nvidia*
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current
sudo update-alternatives --config gl_conf (not sure what to choose, I just pick an option at random)
sudo ldconfig
sudo nvidia-xconfig

and then restart gets everything apparently working correctly, with my desktop spread across two monitors.

However, after two or three computer restarts, it 'forgets' and defaults back to low graphics mode and all the common error messages mentioned in multiple threads here, with my second monitor just duplicating the primary monitor.

Under System-Hardware drivers it says Nvidia_current is activated but not in use, regardless of whether it starts normally or in low graphics mode.

What's up? It's a pain to have to go through that sequence over and over again, and then restart my computer every two or three days, and leaving the computer on 24/7 isn't an option. power saving and all that.

Ubuntu :: Repeating GUI Login After Latest 10.04 Updates?

Aug 24, 2010

I have an MSI U100 Winbook with Ubuntu Workstation 10.04 LTS newly installed (about 4 days ago).

The update manager displayed about 15 or so updates for my 10.04 installation which I installed. Upon reboot, I can not successfully login to the desktop. It will take my username/password, the screen will go black for a couple of seconds, then the error sound, and back to the login dialogue.

A tail on /var/log/messages displays:

atkbd.c: Unknown key released (translated set 2, code 0xf7 on isa0060/serio0)
atkbd.c: Use 'setkeycodes e077 <keycode>; to make it known.
composit sync not supported

These messages keep repeating. I am able to login at the console just fine. I have enabled root login but get the same issues logging in as root. I have googled and found several articles and postings involving these messages but they are all in reference to upgrading from 9.x to 10.04. I did not upgrade and did not experience the freezing of applications as noted in those posts.

Server :: Mdadm Continually Accessing Raid Device

Dec 4, 2010

I have an Linksys NSLU2 with four usb harddrives attached to it. One is for the os, the other three are setup as a RAID5 array. Yes, I know the raid will be slow, but the server is only for storage and will realistically get accessed once or twice a week at the most. I want the drives to spin down but mdadm is doing something in the background to access them. An lsof on the raid device returns nothing at all. The drive are blinking non-stop and never spin down until I stop the raid. Then they all spin down nicely after the appropriate time.

They are Western Digital My Book Essentials and will spin down by themselves if there is no access. What can I shutdown in mdadm to get it to stop continually accessing the drives? Is it the sync mechanism in the software raid that is doing this? I tried setting the monitor to --scan -1 to get to check the device just once, but to no avail. I even went back and formatted the raid with ext2 thinking maybe the journaling had something to do with it. There are no files on the raid device, it's empty.

I don't even know where to begin, or how to troubleshoot the issue if nothing shows up in the log... could use some help, please.

Problem occurs with or without the nvidia drivers installed. Ubuntu or windows, same thing..connected or not connected to the internet

I've ran every memory test I can find, with no issues reported. HD seems OK. No other symptom that I can find, other than it croaking, usually when I'm in the middle of a broadcast or recording.

Debian :: Create File With Repeating Pattern?

Jul 22, 2010

I want to create some files of a specific size containing a repeating pattern. I did some research and found that I can create a file and fill it with (fairly) random data by using dd like so: dd if=/dev/urandom of=myfile.dat bs=$(( 1024 * 1024 )) count=100 (Creates a 100 MB file.) I found that here: Quickly creating large files.

Rather than fill a file with random data, I'd like to use these patterns: 0xaa, 0x55, 0xff, and 0x00 (one per file). Is there a simple way to accomplish this?

General :: Why MemTest Repeating Single Test

Jun 20, 2010

Bought computer 11 months ago, immediately there were problems. What would happen is, when I logged in after a long period of shut down, the system would BSOD. Then I would restart and everything would be fine, until the next time I shut down for a long time (8ish hours) and got back on. I sent the laptop in (a couple times) and they eventually replaced the RAM and the BSODs went away. This is all on Windows 7 (well started on Vista, switched to Windows 7).

I recently set up a dual boot with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04. I'm experiencing crashes on Ubuntu (the whole system just freezes, can't operate mouse, keyboard, or anything) and the behavior is similar. When I log on after a long period of shut down, the system will crash, but if I restart (actually I have to wait 10 minutes before I restart, if I restart immediately it will crash again) then it is fine, until the next period of long shutdown.

So I'm thinking it's bad RAM, so I downloaded Memtest and am testing each of my sticks (they are each 2GB) individually in the same connector thing (don't know what it is called, whatever the sticks attach to). The test for the first one passed with flying colors. However, the second one is having problems. On test #2, the memtest repeats itself, continuously looping through 0-32767 errors on the right side.

My laptop is an Asus G50VT
The 2 most interesting lines...
Highest Error Address: 000fffffffc - 4095.9 MB // does this make sense? 4095.9 MB on a 2GB stick?
Test 2: 32767 // the 32767 loops back around to 0 and repeats

General :: Getting Info On Kernel On Another Disk - Kernel Panic Error 6 Ext3

Feb 13, 2011

Dell laptop booting from a USB stick with a CentOS 5.5 minimum installation.

Uncompressing Linux...OK, booting the kernel.
Red Hat nash version 4.2.1.13 starting
sda: assuming drive cache: write through
sda: assuming drive cache: write through
mount: error 6 mounting ext3
mount: error 2 mounting none
switchroot: mount failed: 22
umount /initrd-dev failed: 2
Kernel panic - no syncing: Attempted to kill init!

1. Does minimum installation not drop on a kernel or initrd with ext3 support? I can't imagine that's true, but have to ask.

2. The USB stick is single partition ext3. Maybe there is some limitation specifically related to USB stick booting that requires boot to be FAT16 or FAT32? Except the CentOS 5.5 installer refuses to let me install on either FAT.

3. How can I do the equivalent of lsmod on a linux installation that will not boot? i.e. I have CentOS x86_64 running in VirtualBox, I can plug the USB stick in there, so how do I get information on the USB stick's kernel and initrd if I can't boot from it?

4. Is it possible to rebuild the i386 based initrd on this USB stick, when the computer is not booted from that stick, with a system that's x86_64 based?

System Info:
Dell Latitude i686 Laptop which has run CentOS 5.5 and Fedora 12,13,14 in the past, and boots from Fedora 14 Live CD transferred to a USB stick. So I know USB booting is possible on this machine, and this stick.

The process of creating the stick:

CentOS 5.5 i386 on a USB stick. Old Dell i686 laptop which has previously run CentOS 5.5 installed from DVD, and has successfully booted from this same USB stick holding transferred Fedora 12,13,14 Live CDs. CentOS 5.5 was installed onto the USB drive directly by the CentOS 5.5 DVD installer (running virtualized in VirtualBox 4.02 on Mac OS X 10.6.5.). No errors or complaints during installation.

For whatever reason, the installer did not do some things correctly. First Grub wasn't working correctly, I got that sorted out and have the Grub+CentOS splash screen, it finds vmlinuz and the initrd, and then I get a kernel panic.

Ext3 was built into the kernel and that's why I'm getting this message. I do not know how the installer would have dropped a kernel or initrd during instalation that that don't contain such a basic thing that obviously comes in linux kernel 2.6.18-89 EL.
