Ubuntu :: Constantly Getting "E:Unable To Correct Problems, You Have Held Broken Package"
Oct 23, 2010
I am running 64-bit Lucid; would running 64 bit be the problem? Anyway, A few of the packages I've been trying to install include Wine 1.3 and a proprietary ATI FGLRX graphics driver for my Laptop's Radeon 4250 graphics card. Many other things I try to install from the Synaptics Package Manager (or anywhere, including the Ubuntu Software Centre) come up with the "E:Unable to correct problems, you have held broken package" as well. It is very frustrating and it is a very vague error. Is it my 64 bit Ubuntu or is it already installed packages that are broken...?

I was using Synaptic to remove unwanted sound & audio programs...it seemed to take out other files that were non-related ?
(1) Now apt-get complains about a "Held Package" and doesn't tell me the pkg name.
(2) Synaptic is broken...error..E: The value 'stable-updates' is invalid for APT::Default-Release as such a release is not available in the sources
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
stable-updates isn't even in my sources list. I've purged synaptic, and re-installed but remains broken. When you close error msg synaptic disappears ? Therefore can't use synaptic at all.
(3) apt-get says many packages that were available are no longer available...like one of the main repos has disappeared ?
(4) I put the same repos that are working for my brother who is running Debian Jessie also, but didn't improve the number of missing available packages.
deb [URL] ....
deb [URL] ....
How or why things have gone so wrong from just removing unwanted sound pkgs.
To recap problems...apt-get held pkg....broken synaptic....unavailable pkgs.

I was having a problem with a fresh 11.04 install and the VPN software I use for work. I found the fix was to upgrade the software, so I downloaded an RPM, converted it to .deb and installed it via dpkg. The install worked and the VPN software now works, but Package Manager says I have a broken package and wants to 'upgrade' to the older broken one. How can I fix this without breaking my VPN SW again?

I am trying to run "sudo pbuilder create" where it runs debootstrap. Then it says:
Code:
I: Checking component main on http://bg.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu. Problem is that this is the old repo I've used. After installing pbuilder and the other dpkg essential packages I've run "sudo pbuilder create", noticed the message of the repo and since I am no longer in Bulgaria, interrupted the script, went to synaptic and changed the repo from there (now is http://archive.linux.duke.edu/ubuntu/). Even rebooted. Double-checked in synaptic the repo is still changed, grepped the files in /etc/apt for "bg" and all results were commented. I ran again "sudo pbuilder create" and it still reports the old repo.
So where does debootstrap reads the repo setting from and how to fix it?

Since yesterday firefox (Namoroka) has been constantly freezing; prior to yesterday it worked perfectly. I've tried un-installing and re-installing, but that didn't fix it. I even tried un-installing Namoroka and installing firefox 3.5 (via apt-get install firefox-3.5), but somehow I continue to get firefox 3.6 (aka Namoroka). Anyone know how to resolve my Namoroka issues or how to install the seemingly more stable 3.5 version? I don't know if this makes a difference, but I originally had installed ubuntu and then installed kde (kubuntu-desktop) desktop on top of it. And yes, I've checked my sources.list to make sure mozilla-daily repository is not listed.

I have installed a package that doesn't work on my system because some dependency is not met and I cannot resolve that without seriously breaking my system. Now I want to uninstall that package but it doesn't work. Synapic package manager is also not able to do anything with this broken package. How can I get rid of it now?

I've have major problems installing cinelerra.
So, I tried to uninstall it.
I messed up at some point. Now, most apt operations result in errors.
At the moment, this is what I get when I try apt-get -f install:
Code:
Is there any way to fix this, or is my package managment permanently broken?
I just want to get to the point where apt isn't returning errors, because at some point I will want to upgrade to 10.04. This is just too risky with broken apt.

On my new installation of 10.04 on a Toshiba A30, I'm trying to install EMC2, using an installer file downloaded from linuxcnc.org. At the end of the process, I get the error message below after trying to fix the broken package with package manager.
E:/var/cache/apt/archives/rtai-modules-2.6.32-122-rtai_3.8.1-linuxcnc1_i386.deb: trying to overwrite '/etc/udev/rules.d/99-rtai.rules', which is also in package rtai-modules-2.6.24-16-rtai 0
get past this problem ?
Is it as simple as removing the rtai-modules-2.6.24-16-rtai 0 package ? Do I need this one ? Is it replaced by the newer one, the rtai-modules-2.6.32-122-rtai_3.8.1 ?

I've only been using Linux for a few days (Specifically - I installed Ubuntu 9.10 last week on my laptop for learning the OS and updated to 10.04 over the weekend). I have searched Google (and found answers) for every problem now except for this new one. I apologise in advance for the length but I wanted to include my own troubleshooting as well.
When I installed and setup Ubuntu Karmic - I added my work software. Autopackage wasn't installed by default so I used terminal's package install <filename> command for the first file - and double clicked on the rest to install. With the OS change I wanted to check to see if these packages would have problems installing on 10.04 (mostly to double check).First I checked my Manage 3rd Party Software to remove them - but all my entries here are blank. (I should have quite a few actually - I've done a lot of installing and downloading in the last few days).I double clicked to re-run them but that failed saying there was a problem with the packages. So I swapped to Terminal and found the following:
When I try to install a software package:
sudo package install "SMART Product Drivers 10.package"
Reply: package: can't open config file /home/test/.mailagent
If I type in just
[code].....
What's interesting, is checking my Fedora and Debian builds (I've done a lot of learning for only a few days! But I know a ton about grub 1 and 2 now) - I can't see a /home/test/.mailagent file or folder to copy either. The only thing I can think of is I have never setup an email account on my system (I've only been using it for a few days) and maybe the blank Manage 3rd Party Software tab is indicating a different problem.
