Ubuntu :: Compiz Using 50-60% (OR MORE) Processor After Resume

Oct 20, 2010

I have a Dell Latitude D630 with Nvidia graphics, Dual-Core, 4GB of RAM. I am using Ubuntu 10.10 64bit . The Nvida driver version is 260.19.06.Whenever I walk away from the computer and it prompts for a password to log back in, it is SLOW. It continues to run slowly until I reboot. The fans are running and system monitor shows that Compiz is eating up a LOT of processor time. After a reboot, all is normal. I need a solution that involves as much automation as possible, I want to try to deploy several identical machines in an environment and I can't with this issue still presenting.

Ubuntu :: After Suspend Or Hibernate Compiz Process Is Using 75%+ Processor

May 27, 2010

I have 10.04 installed on my Laptop (Dell Latitude D630 with the Nvidia video upgrade). This was a clean install to a hard drive that I let it totally erase and use as it saw fit. I am using the Nvidia driver marked as "current" in the hardware driver settings.

When my laptop screen dims due to inactivity, such as not used for 5 mins or so, it will prompt me for a password to log back in. No big deal. However, when it resumes from this state it is SLOW!! I go to system monitor and see that the process "Compiz" is burning up both of my cores at about 70% or HIGHER. It's not using a significant amount of memory which is strange. From what I have been able to gather Compiz has some responsibilty for the GUI and killing the process to attempt to restart it is a "bad idea".

Ubuntu :: What Does It Mean For Processor To Be N-bit

Apr 5, 2010

I have really never thought of this question before up until i was asked by my friend what does it mean for a processor to be 64 bit as opposed to 32 bit? how is it better? sadly for me i wasn't able to answer it. i did a little of googling (i must admit i didn't have much time) and wasn't able to find an answer. What does it mean for a processor to be n-bit, where n = {4, 8, 16, 32, 64}. Aside from knowing that I can operate on larger data values on a 64 bit processor rather than on a 32 bit one, I know nothing more.

Ubuntu :: Processor Use All The Way Up All The Time

Mar 3, 2011

I'm working on this Intel Celeron HP33w Pavillion with 512mb ram and a 180 gb hard drive. Installed xp on it, partitioned half the drive and left the other half blank. xp installed no prob, then installed ubuntu on the second partition letting ubuntu create the partition and swap space (which was 3 gigs) and it installed fine (aside from being incredibly slow to go through the actual install process). Once finally booted into ubuntu with no other programs running aside from the standard ones that start with ubuntu, i added the system monitor to the panel and expanded all the other monitors. Memory was normal, cup average was 100% and cpu usage was 100%. Figured something went wrong with the install so I reinstalled and got the same result. Window xp runs just as fast as it should with 512mb of ram so I'm sort of at a loss as to why ubuntu is eating up all my memory with no programs running.

I upgraded my processor two days ago(p4 -> C2D), and ever since then I have been getting segfaults, which are causing my programs to crash randomly. At first I thought it was isolated to one program(deluge), but after searching around I was looking at the /var/log/messages and found a bunch of segfault messages after I installaed the processor. Ubuntu :: HP G60-120US Processor Scaling?

Dec 31, 2010

Basic Info: Ubuntu 10.10, AMD RM-70 2GHZ Processor, HP G60-120US, Bios F54. I'm unable to scale my processor (either core) using the applet in the menu bar. Every time I try, I select 2GHZ, and re-open; then it's displayed that 500MHZ was selected. I'm unable to pick any speed, the computer has a mind of it's own in that sense. It's essentially stuck at 500MHZ for 98% of the uptime, which makes it impossible to do anything more than web browsing. Ex: I tried watching an HD video, I watched 5 min, and 1,400 out of the 10,000 or so were dropped!

"[0.104467] ACPI Warning: Incorrect checksum in table [OEMB] - 03, should be FA 20090521 tbutils-246"

I'm not sure whether it's operational but the screen is off. It has exactly the same resault a waiting for the blank screen except it won't go back on.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Log Out When Resume From Suspend?

May 6, 2010

I've just upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 via the upgrade manager. Prior to the upgrade I was able to suspend and hibernate without any problems. Now that I have upgraded to 10.04, I can suspend however when I resume I am back at the gdm login prompt, logging in again with a new session.Having just done another test whilst writing this, it actually appears that if I select suspend from the top right I am suspended and can resume my session. If I close the lid on my laptop (which is supposed to suspend) I am logged out and suspended. Also, Hibernate doesn't work as well - sometimes it never actually hibernates (just sits on a black screen) and sometimes it doesn't resume (it's never hibernated and resumed correctly since the upgrade)

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Does Not Resume From Hibernate

Oct 14, 2010

I have ubuntu 10.04 installed on a 50 gb partition on my hard drive I have given a 3.5 gb partition for swap which is > 3gb ram i have. Druing the installation of ubuntu I had specified the swap partition and its hibernate was working fine sometimes before. But I had to delete the swap partition and recreate it because of some reasons so I did that and again created a 3.5 gb partition for swap space usig ubuntu live cd.

But after restart ubuntu no longer detected the swap partition it was ok as its uuid had changed so I specified the swap partition to be mounted automatically by adding an entry in /etc/fstab and then also added the same UUID in /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume so that it could resume. After restarting ubuntu after adding the entrly in /etc/fstab i got the option of hibernate but after hibernate everything goes well but after hibernate when i start laptop again ubuntu first tries to resume but it does not and without giving any message it shows the login screen.

Ubuntu :: Gnome-Do Using 100% Processor Usage On Start Up

Feb 6, 2010

So I have 64bit Ubuntu 9.10 installed on my laptop and I noticed one day on boot that everything I did was running very slowly. Upon cracking open terminal and running top to see what was bogging the system I found that gnome-do was taking up 100% of my processor...

This happens around 50% of the time when I boot I've noticed. Killing the processor and restarting Gnome-Do makes the application behave as it should.

Ideas on why this might be? Just a bad 64bit version in the repos I'm guessing? Might try and compile a new version from source later today.
