Ubuntu :: Northwood P4 Processor Hangs Unless Underclocked?
Jul 18, 2010
I'm running a machine with a 2.4 Ghz hyper threading processor: because 1.2 ghz sucks nowadays I'm going to turn hyper-threading off and give it a much needed speed bump.Unfortunately, when setting the CPU to it's default 2400 Mhz (200 mhz bus speed) it hangs on boot and the bios gives a warning that the clock speed is incorrect. This is wrong because in hyper threading mode at 1.2 Ghz per core it runs just fine - what is causing the hang? Bios firmware update?

System has a boot partition on raid1. The root filesystem is on RAID1/LVM.During the boot process, it gets to here:
Intel machine check architecture supported.
Intel machine check reporting enabled on CPU#1.
CPU1: Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU E1200 @ 1.60GHz stepping 0d
[code]...
most of the time, it will not reboot. I can cycle power, and, eventually, it does boot. So, hardware issue perhaps? Something else? What can I do, or add to the configuration to help debug this and figure out why? For boot options, I have tried noapic, apm=off, noht, nomce, nousb, nousbstorage, and none of those helped. As the machine is remote, to mess with console stuff, I have to get a KVM over IP hooked up, which I can do.

I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 x64 on a HP Pavilion p6565uk.
My PC is x64 compatible, although ubuntu will not install.
I don't get to any gui, it says ubuntu will continue install in 5 seconds, at 0, nothing happens. The CPU light is flashing, but nothing happens.
After about 10 minutes, it reboots, but when the HP splash screen shows (Before the boot selection screen) it just hangs. I have to do a hard shutdown to boot back up.
I am using wubi for install.

I have really never thought of this question before up until i was asked by my friend what does it mean for a processor to be 64 bit as opposed to 32 bit? how is it better? sadly for me i wasn't able to answer it. i did a little of googling (i must admit i didn't have much time) and wasn't able to find an answer. What does it mean for a processor to be n-bit, where n = {4, 8, 16, 32, 64}. Aside from knowing that I can operate on larger data values on a 64 bit processor rather than on a 32 bit one, I know nothing more.

I'm working on this Intel Celeron HP33w Pavillion with 512mb ram and a 180 gb hard drive. Installed xp on it, partitioned half the drive and left the other half blank. xp installed no prob, then installed ubuntu on the second partition letting ubuntu create the partition and swap space (which was 3 gigs) and it installed fine (aside from being incredibly slow to go through the actual install process). Once finally booted into ubuntu with no other programs running aside from the standard ones that start with ubuntu, i added the system monitor to the panel and expanded all the other monitors. Memory was normal, cup average was 100% and cpu usage was 100%. Figured something went wrong with the install so I reinstalled and got the same result. Window xp runs just as fast as it should with 512mb of ram so I'm sort of at a loss as to why ubuntu is eating up all my memory with no programs running.

Can I set up my system to use a specific processor to do one task, and another processor for normal applications.
Say for example, I'm using a program that relies heavily on your processor, I have a dual core, so I can use one core for that, and another for normal applications.

I have a Dell Latitude D630 with Nvidia graphics, Dual-Core, 4GB of RAM. I am using Ubuntu 10.10 64bit . The Nvida driver version is 260.19.06.Whenever I walk away from the computer and it prompts for a password to log back in, it is SLOW. It continues to run slowly until I reboot. The fans are running and system monitor shows that Compiz is eating up a LOT of processor time. After a reboot, all is normal. I need a solution that involves as much automation as possible, I want to try to deploy several identical machines in an environment and I can't with this issue still presenting.

I upgraded my processor two days ago(p4 -> C2D), and ever since then I have been getting segfaults, which are causing my programs to crash randomly. At first I thought it was isolated to one program(deluge), but after searching around I was looking at the /var/log/messages and found a bunch of segfault messages after I installaed the processor. Here is the grep from the messages file:
Code:

Basic Info: Ubuntu 10.10, AMD RM-70 2GHZ Processor, HP G60-120US, Bios F54. I'm unable to scale my processor (either core) using the applet in the menu bar. Every time I try, I select 2GHZ, and re-open; then it's displayed that 500MHZ was selected. I'm unable to pick any speed, the computer has a mind of it's own in that sense. It's essentially stuck at 500MHZ for 98% of the uptime, which makes it impossible to do anything more than web browsing. Ex: I tried watching an HD video, I watched 5 min, and 1,400 out of the 10,000 or so were dropped!

A friend is trying to rescue some files from his computer because Windows won't boot, so he's making a Live CD. However, he realized that he accidentally downloaded the Intel version of Ubuntu, but he has an AMD processor. Does this matter for a Live session if he's not actually installing anything?

So I have 64bit Ubuntu 9.10 installed on my laptop and I noticed one day on boot that everything I did was running very slowly. Upon cracking open terminal and running top to see what was bogging the system I found that gnome-do was taking up 100% of my processor...
This happens around 50% of the time when I boot I've noticed. Killing the processor and restarting Gnome-Do makes the application behave as it should.
Ideas on why this might be? Just a bad 64bit version in the repos I'm guessing? Might try and compile a new version from source later today.

Another laptops I have found are the Toshiba A505 series, but they are not currently supported by the latest version of Ubuntu.
I anyone knows of a good laptop (must have Corei7 processor and Nvidia/ATI powerful card fully supported by the proprietray drivers), please share your knowledge here.

I have learned something that I wanted to share with everyone. I don't know if this has been posted before. I was using a Dell optiplex 270 with a penium 4 processor 3 ghz computer 4g RAM dual processor. I tried to put the new Ubuntu on it because everyone was raving about it. Everytime I put the 10.04 on it, it slowed down and became very sluggish. I then had to reformat it back to 9.10.
I had an extra computer here that I was not using. It was also a Dell but it was an Inspiron 530 with an Intel Celeron CPU 2 ghz and 2g RAM. Well, to my suprise, it works GREAT with Ubuntu 10.04. I have not had one issue with it since I installed the new Ubuntu. In my opinion, it is a processor issue. I don't think that Ubuntu 10.04 works with a Penium 4 processor. It does work GREAT with a Celeron CPU processor.
It has been my understanding that Ubuntu (Linux) was made and has been made for older and new computers. It does seem that the new releases have been made only for the newer computers. Has anyone ever had these types of issues or come to these types of conclusions?

A processor is very important to me and I'm curious what processor to get for a new computer build. I will be using Ubuntu for most things except iTunes, HD movies, and a few low spec requiring games on Win 7. I am building it as right now I have a half year old netbook that can do most things just fails at game play and movies but it's alright. And I have a desktop with just Ubuntu that's about the same quality but 8 years old. I want to build a computer that will be very fast for the next 4 years enough to get me to college and buy a nice laptop. I am on a small budget of around 500- 750 dollars. I have most things picked out but processor has me stumped. To me processor is a bit tricky to replace and I'd rather get a higher-end one to start and stick with that than buy another CPU two years down the road.
I don't mind upgrading RAM, GPU, and or even the HDD at a later point but I want to get the CPU as close to perfect as possible. First I heard AMD processors tend to be a bit hot. I was wondering what cooler is $50 or less that does a great job at cooling a AMD AM3 socket CPU. I do plan to overclock a very small bit perhaps up to .3 GHz plus max. First I was thinking a nice core i5 at $200 and never really checked anything else. Then, I was thinking a hexa-core at 2.8 GHz I think but decided too much and didn't need six cores. The AMD socket type also supported USB 3.0 which I instantly fell in love with. Then I found a quad core Phenom II x4 black edition at 3.20 GHz for around $160.I liked the core unlocker and it looked incredible. Now I'm rethinking a bit again.
I found a dual-core that is same thing as the other AMD one above except well only two cores. I think that would do me fine I'd I'd save $60 by getting 2 less cores. With the things I use a computer for (Ubuntu, Win7, HD quality playback, minor gaming like Runescape, and small multitasking like openoffice a browser or two and perhaps some pictures, game or movie.) I also want to be able to do this quickly for the next 4 years without a hiccup or at least to a minimum if possible. I really don't want to upgrade CPU once I get that bad boy in there. I also want it ready for higher versions of Windows like Windows 8 is supposedly coming sometime in 2012 I've heard. I just want the best CPU to be fast and efficient, run cool, and work well for me for the next 4 years.

im not very educated in amd processors, but i think that they are all 64-bit processors.
i downloaded the amd ubuntu 9.10 into my computer, and used the usb maker utility in the system menu. i put in in my new pc (it was given to me), and i tell it to boot into the usb.
then i get this. i am posting a pic.
sorry about the sideways pic. i took it with my phone.
anyway, i get the syslinux boot shell script thingy. i have tried lots of things. linux, vmlinuz, lots of other things i found online. so what im wondering is the exact name of the kernel in ubuntu 9.10 amd version.

After installing the 32 bit desktop version 10.04 on vmware 6 and then rebooting ( a number of times) I get the message "the guest operating system has disabled the processor". This doesnt seem to happen when I install the 64bit version though. I have 9.1 running in 32bit versions in vmware and several other operating systems.I am not sure if any of those things would cause this issue but I have read in posts about people having issues with RAID and speed stepping. Hopefully that info can help spmepne point me in the right direction. Thank you.
