I am using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx and I am facing a strange issue with the top panel. Sometimes it looks weird as shown in attached image.In the image you can see white blocks .. after date the username gets clumsy.Until and unless I restart my system the behaviour cannot be reset. Is there any workaround or solution for this issue ??
View 1 RepliesI've upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04, and now I'm experiencing some problems with the displaying of panels and icons that I'm hoping someone can help me to fix.
Situation: Running 11.04 in latest virtualbox (4.06, with guest additions installed) on a macbook pro running snow leopard (10.6.7). I'm in gnome classic (no effects) because I'm not yet used to gnome 3 and compiz doesn't run all that well for me in this virtualization set-up. But the problem, described below, is consistent from gnome 3 to classic (with effects) to classic (without effects).
Problem: When I first log in after a reboot, everything looks great in the default settings (ambiance theme, I think), but after ~ 15 seconds, the panels and icons revert to an odd looking theme that I don't particularly care for. And trying to change the settings in the "Appearance" preferences is of no help, i.e., I can change the themes, but the panels and icons remain in a stock, old-school gnome-ish theme.
Has anyone else seen panel weather report fail to display anything rightly beside the current date? Stuck on incorrect date as well...
View 8 Replies View RelatedA couple of months ago I (naively) installed Python 2.6.2 to my system without using an RPM. Then recently I tried to run the Display panel (/usr/bin/system-config-display) and it never opened.I then used it from the command line and after realizing it was a Python problem I spent some time trying to eliminate the python conflict by removing 2.6 and reinstalling all the python related RPMs from URL..Searching online one of the things I have found is to recompile python with UCS4 support though that seems to go against the idea of using an rpm as I understand it and I would assume it has been compiled as needed for CentOS.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have just updated to karmic. For some odd reason, the time/date indicator on the top panel now spreads the data over two lines, rather than placing them side by side. There doesn't seem to be any option in the preferences program to control this.
This means that the panel cannot be reduced below a two line minimum. Not only have I lost desktop space, but the panel icons have expanded to suit the new thicker panel.
Is it possible to have htop display a graph in the panel same as System monitor does?

Only when there are no known wireless AP around. if there is a previously connected wireless in the area I will see the icon but if I'm at a new place it just won't show up. nm-applet is still running, I tried to kill and restart it but the icon still doesn't show .

I've managed to disable the display of minimised windows in the panel at the bottom of the screen. To compensate I'm using a Widget which allows me to get back to the window as I need it. But I'd prefer to be able to simply click on the panel.

After upgrading to Fedora 13, the bottom panel bar is in the old position, and over any windows that extend below line 600.Is there something I need to do to get the panel bar to go to the bottom of the screen like it did in Fedora 12?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI remember this was discussed some time ago but I cannot find the thread any more. I was just wondering if others are still seeing the same problem . I've had this all through 4.4.3 and now with 4.4.4. For some reason if only the logout or lock button is selected and placed on the far right of the panel then part of the button is chopped off. This only happens with the panel locked. If both buttons are selected then they display correctly. I also notice that when only one button is selected that it's size is slightly smaller than when both are selected. Also it only seems to be the logout/lock widget that has this problem.

I've tried Xinerama and Twinview, and various configurations in xorg.conf, and cannot seem to make it happen.
How to make both my panels (top and bottom) go across both screens?
I recently decided to try KDE4 and would like the change the clock on the panel to display 12 hour format and not the default 24hour format but i can not find where to change this option currently the clock looks like the attached picture. Gnome has this option and I would like to see it in KDE if it exists in the default clock. I am willing to replace the default KDE clock with a seperate widget if one exists for this.

The 's' key opens the shutdown applet.This did not happen on 9.10, or earlier
View 4 Replies View RelatedSomeone on the forums had me uninstall pulseaudio to get pSX working, and now I don't have a volume control icon on the panel and when choosing to add stuff to the panel it isn't available.I re-installed pulseaudio through the package manager, but I have a feeling it didn't install everything that uninstalled with it.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have had this problem with all installations of Maverick Meerkat. Moving the default clock from the upper panel to the lower panel makes it bahave strangely. When clicked on, it now appears in the middle of the screen (sometimes even higher depending on resolution). This never happened prior to Maverick Meerkat.
How do I go about to fix this strange bug?

Regarding the gnome-panel in Ubuntu (64 bit).... I discovered some time ago that I wasn't the only one who routinely (every login) had their gnome-panel appear butchered, for which Alt-F2 then 'killall gnome-panel' would easily fix.
Having become impatient with this over the past 8 months, I decided I would automate the process and so cofiguring the startup applications seemed like a perfectly logical choice to me. Turns out I was wrong. After adding 'killall gnome-panel' to the startup applications not only does the panel fail to load altogether now, but Alt-F2 doesn't even work.
I tried Ctl-Alt-F1 and working with the graphics-free mode thinking I could somehow navigate to the startup apps config file and edit it, but I don't know where it is or how to edit it without logging in as root and I certainly don't know of any 'root password'.
How I can set that my left panel fit the top edge of the screen (instead of top panel)?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm new to Ubuntu and really like it so far, having come from a PC background up to now. I've installed it on my Acer laptop and all is well there. However, on my desktop, the screen resolution doesn't match the Ubuntu desktop and fonts and graphics are very blurry. The hardware I have is:
HP Compaq dx2450 micro-tower FE281EA
Samsung 23" widescreen monitor, native resolution 1680x1050
When I check the resolution using System > Preferences > Display it says that indeed I'm using 1680x1050, which should be correct. However, the bottom of the Ubuntu desktop is cut-off, below the bottom of the screen, so I can only see the very top edge of the bottom panel. The top panel is also slightly cut off, missing about the top 20% of the panel. Left and right seem to be in line OK. The resulting blurriness of fonts makes it fairly unusable until I get it fixed.
I've searched fairly extensively and I realise there are other threads on this so sorry for posting again, but they all seem to be slightly different problems and all the responses are fairly or very technical. Maybe I can't avoid a technical solution and getting my hands dirty with a terminal prompt, but I'm hoping I can fix this without resorting to stuff I don't understand and might get wrong. I'm a technically minded end-user but not a unix guy.
So I take a glance at the time, and realize the clock has been showing the same hour for ages.Basically, if I use the gnome-panel menu for launching empathy the panel freezes. The workaround that I use is switching off showing seconds and switching it on again on the date format menu of the panel. (I never used seconds on the date format, but that way you realize the panel is frozen)I've seen this behaviour in two diferent computers I use, any hint on what may cause this? Every applet keeps working as usual, but the menu display is frozen.I'm on 10.04, using version 2.30.2 of gnome. Steps to reproduce: click on the envelope icon of the menu and launch xat. It only happens the first time (when empathy is loaded) and it gets solved if you start empathy through sessions or whatever (The problem with the sessions workaround is that I can't manage to make it started without focus).

View 6 Replies View RelatedSo I just updated my IdeaPad to Natty and played around with Unity. The performane was absolutely unbearable so I installed Unity2D from the software center. Now when I start the session everything seems to be fine at first. Whenever I move the mouse over the panel though it seems to switch to my old gnome-panel from the "Classic" session (with some missing icons). When I move the mouse over that panel again it switches back to the Unity panel style. What is going on? Can I fix this somehow? I will have to use the classic session until I get a working consistent behavior
