Since i upgrade to Maverick, i can't copy file to a W2003 share using Nautilus via gvfs. I can delete and create files, but I can't copy. But it works in command line with cp. I tried on a samba share, on a XP Pro share, it works. It works on W2003 share only for small files (less than 16 ko)

How do I do it so it asks for permission, or how do I do sudo + task in Gnome ?

I need a command-line method of copying files from a Linux box to a Windows machine that is in a domain and requires authentication. I cannot install additional software or services on the Windows XP machine. I can install any software on the Linux machine. I've tried scp, but the connection failed and if my understanding is correct it is because scp requires that the target (windows machine) be running an ssh service. Is there a command-line linux utility that can pass Windows domain user and password and then copy a file from the linux machine to a share on the windows machine?

when i fill in administrator (i am logged in at the w2003 with administrator) the username changes to samba/administrator, but i cannot log in.
just installed ubuntu couple of days back on my netbook. I am still a beginner, enjoying my adventure exploring ubuntu. I have another desktop which runs on XP. I am able to access XP shared folders through my netbook(linux). However, i wanted to copy files from XP infact folders using TERMINAL in my netbook, not copy and paste using my mouse. However, I've struggled to configure the share and folder so that the Win7 client can create files and/or folders in the share. Kept getting Permission Denied errors. Finally, (using Webmin) I set the permissions on the file folder so that "Other" had write access. I don't understand why this was necessary (and how unsecure this is). I already had the write access checkbox ticked for "User" but it wasn't enough.

I have Ubuntu 10.04.1 installed alongside Windows Home premium 7 on a Compaq CQ5110f with 2 dual processors, 320 GB HDD, 4 gb Ram, less than a year old/ It is giving me some error messages. It is wanting to lock the drive or various programs after being left unused for a few minutes, I have not found where I can disable this. I do not need passwords, really. I am the only user. I reinstalled it once, on top of itself (Ubuntu) and it worked fine briefly, then started doing it all again.
I use to sometimes install Ubuntu as a windows app. on a previous version, maybe 9.04 - 9.10, but think I can not do it on this version?
So, Can I install as WIndows app on this version of Ubuntu? CAn I install Ubuntu on one drive alone, and windows on the other drive alone, install both in same computer and get dual booting? I think before, to do that I had to reset boot drives in BIOS to whichever I had the OS I wanted to use?
Or MUST they be installed on same drive for dual booting to be available?
I am attaching screen shots of the messages I get, etc. I have tried to share files and folders, but it does not allow me to select Share this folder as some security thing is not installed, And the time I am required to enter password to use comp[iter after being idle a few minutes, seems to be tied to my folder, which is JOHN. I may have to think about removing Ubuntu from this drive, add a SATA drive and use two, one for Windows and one for Ubuntu.
I have a 160GB harddrive which I installed a F12, would like to upgrade to a bigger drive, but I hate to have to re-install everything.
Recommend a good disk copy utility? The utility should be able to not only copy files, but boot sector and everything. So I just need to make a copy, change my BIOS to boot from the new drive and run everything as before.
I setup ubuntu 10.04.1 server on a computer I'm using as a server for my home. I can view the share folder on server from win7 I can read files but cannot right to the share. However from Xubuntu I was able to read and write no problem. So the question is... why can't windows 7 read and right like xubuntu? I have 2 win7 machines and both were denied writing to the share folder... I'm by no means an expert.. I setup the share using ubuntu server guide pdf... not sure if its done correctly maybe someone here knows off hand what kind of permissions would be causing this.
View 6 Replies View RelatedThere are a number of shares on the destination system; for the purposes of this thread I used D$ and F$ (corresponding to those partitions). These shares are mounted permanently via CIFS (entries in fstab) on the source system.Today I copied an ISO image of some 3.5 GB from source (S) to destination (D). md5sum on S gave a different checksum for the source ISO than that calculated by HashCheck Shell Extension for the destination ISO. I know some would argue that I shoud use the same md5sum programm for both images.
To circumvent that I 7zipped the ISO, verified it's integrity and copied that archive from S to D. Verification of the acrchive by the Win version of 7z failed.To see if it's a protocol problem I copied both ISO and archive of ISO to another D this time using sshfs (it's an Ubuntu server). Flawless copies.Then I copied both files to another Win-based server on the same network. Flawless copies.Mystified, I checked the partition's file system integrity (NTFS) where the errors occured. Minor inconsistencies (no errors according to chkdsk). So I copied both files again, once to another partition (D:) of the original D, once to that partition causing the error in the first place (F:).
(D:): archive corrupt, checksum okay
(F:): this time around both okay.
What the hell can I do to nail down the problem?! I don't even know whether it's a problem of the source system or the destination.
We have 10.x ubuntu server with XP clients. We have samba share folders at LAN. Is there any possibility that we can disable copy and paste option for some specific folders, while other data folders remain as usual in our shared data?

They have owner:group of mysql, some have owner:group root:mysql and so on. To copy them under cli or Nautilus everything changes to root for I execute sudo cp or gksudo nautilus and copy via gui.
Since it is MySQL data I could simply do a dump of the database and restore it on the other machine. But there's about 20 db's and I want to do this via a copy for it will be faster - at least that is what I think.

When i installed ubuntu. I made a seperate partition so that i could copy an ISO image onto it of an up-to-date version of ubuntu. I wanted to then boot the ISO up so i could install the version that way.I've already tried doing it through the update manager but it'll download, almost be done with installing and it freezes on me. so i figured this would be easier. However i do not know how to gain access to the other partition to copy the ISO image.

The problem, apparently, is that newer versions of Samba hit servers with multiple requests at the same time, and for some reason the Zyxel and Iomega boxes can't handle this. I am upgrading a QNAP NAS - the unit only had 1 drive to begin with. I have taken this original drive out and hooked it to my ubuntu system and when I boot my machine ubuntu sees the volume that was the volume the qnap shared. and it sees MOST of the files. but when I go to copy stuff it gives errors stating things like 'can't copy data2.cab' - when I go the directory where it claims it can't copy data2.cab there is no data2.cab.
Thing is I am pretty sure there *IS* a data2.cab ... just that the rights or something are such that I cannot see / copy it. is there a simple command I can run on the *entire* drive that will set the ownership of ALL files so that I can see and move them? I just need to copy all these files over to the upgraded nas and then I can reformat this drive.

I want to use it for audio books. when I plug it in and try to copy files to it it says I dont have permission its read only access. Trying to change the permissions does not work no matter what I try. I ended up finding out it is formatted as a msdos partition, which from what I read at another web site may be fat16. Dont know for sure about that though, just know it says msdos partition type. how I can change permissions to this so I can put my audio files on it?
