Ubuntu :: Copy Files From Ldd To Location?
Jan 30, 2010
When I use ldd it prints the location of the depends. Is there a way to copy the depends listed to a location in a single command or streamline it? I don't want to copy each dependence once at a time.

Is there a method at the command line to copy files from one location to another and retain the source files group and user?I'm migrating some MySQL files from one machine to another.I want to back-up the original files in the directory presently. They have owner:group of mysql, some have owner:group root:mysql and so on. To copy them under cli or Nautilus everything changes to root for I execute sudo cp or gksudo nautilus and copy via gui.
Since it is MySQL data I could simply do a dump of the database and restore it on the other machine. But there's about 20 db's and I want to do this via a copy for it will be faster - at least that is what I think.

I am attempting to copy a set of sub folders from their multiple parent directories to a new location.
For example, I have three folders to copy:
I would like them to be copied to:
In actuality there are many folders besides folder1, folder2, folder3, and no numerical order exists. So, the folder named 'photos' would be copied to its parent folder's name in a new location. I would need this to occur for all folders in the '/home/user' directory.

I am able to access XP shared folders through my netbook(linux). However, i wanted to copy files from XP infact folders using TERMINAL in my netbook, not copy and paste using my mouse. Are there any commands for it?

I have a 160GB harddrive which I installed a F12, would like to upgrade to a bigger drive, but I hate to have to re-install everything.
Recommend a good disk copy utility? The utility should be able to not only copy files, but boot sector and everything. So I just need to make a copy, change my BIOS to boot from the new drive and run everything as before.

suppose I have a tree structure like this:
/home/mahmood/sim/a/b/file1.cpp
/home/mahmood/sim/a/b/file2.h
/home/mahmood/sim/a/c/file3.txt
/home/mahmood/sim/d/file4.txt
How can I copy all of them to /home/mahmood/sim. So that when I run "ls" in /home/mahmood/sim, I see all files:
file1.cpp
file2.h
file3.txt
file4.txt
Can 'cp' search for all file and copy them in another folder?

So when i run the install everything goes well untill it reaches the point where it says "What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel?
I have tried everything, different tutorials, installed a build package etc and it still asks for the directory. here is the uname r output :
uname r : 2.6.35-24-generic

I'm trying to install vmware tools in mint.
All goes well until I get to this -
What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel? [usr/src/linux/include]
When installing the vmware tools it says to just hit enter and the default will be used.
Hitting enter just keeps giving me the error message- The path "usr/src/linux/include" is not an existing directory.

When i installed ubuntu. I made a seperate partition so that i could copy an ISO image onto it of an up-to-date version of ubuntu. I wanted to then boot the ISO up so i could install the version that way.I've already tried doing it through the update manager but it'll download, almost be done with installing and it freezes on me. so i figured this would be easier. However i do not know how to gain access to the other partition to copy the ISO image.

I recently forced a reset on my applications menu, this system has been updated since at least Intrepid all the way through to Maverick and so I have decided to start having a bit of a clean up. Having deleted my ~/.config/menus directory and logged out/in, I noticed that I now have a menu for 'Other' within my applications menu, there must be around 200 entries in there, detailing every app I have ever installed through wine (whether they are still installed or not) along with a few others (VMWare player for one example).
Where are the files located that the computer probes to regenerate this menu? I'd like to clear the list as much as possible as the same list gets in the way when choosing what program a file should be opened with (it's far easier to choose from a list of currently installed apps than a list of 300 or so possibly installed apps).

I'm working on a little bash script for copying files from one location to another, while sending the verbose output of cp to a text file.
how can I append a time stamp to the verbose lines in the log file.
The command:
Code:
cp -fRcp dir1/* dir2/ >> log/$(date +%y-%m-%d)_log.txt
Again, I want to know how I make the time stamp appear in front of the line inside of the log.txt.

I'd like to move a selection of files from all the sub-directories within an overall directory to a single destination. I don't want any of the directory structure, just the files themselves. This is what I tried so far:
mv /dir1/*/igs*.sp3.Z /dir2
There are other .sp3.Z files in the * directories within /dir1 but I just need the ones that start with igs..

Does anybody here know a program (Linux-based or even Windows-based) which permits looking at the files structure of a harddisk in such a way that you can find out what file lies where on the harddisk? To specify further what I mean, back in the DOS days the Norton Utilities would show the distribution of files on a harddisk. It would show the harddisk as row upon row of rectangles, marked as used or not used, and the top left rectangles were the beginning of the harddisk while the lower right were the end of it.Now if a program put some files at the end of the harddisk it was possible to mark the filled rectangles and find out exactly which files were there.
