My filesystem crashed/corrupted. When i start my machine i see the following messageTarget filesystem doesn't have /sbin/init.No init fount. I've searched the internet all over, but somehow I didn't find a solution (I REALLY hope there is one :/). Of course I might have missed something, I found a lot of similar, but not quite identical problems.Today, when I tried to start up my system I was quite shocked, as my Ubuntu 10.10 didn't boot. The error I got was "No init found. Try passing init=bootarg".I didn't have any problems booting Windows XP, which I had installed alongside Ubuntu, so I burned a Live CD and tried to find out what was the matter.
As it appears, my Linux partition (/dev/sda5) is broken. I can't access it via Nautilus, as I always get a "A job is pending on /dev/sda5" error. Mounting it via terminal doesn't seem to work either.When trying to check the filesystem, either in Disk Utility or in GParted, I instantly get an error that the "device is busy" and (again) that "a job is pending".I tried to set a boot flag on /dev/sda5 (it wasn't there before), but this didn't help neither with accessing the partition from the Live CD norI tried to run the boot info script I found somewhere in a forum post, but it is just hanging itself up as soon as it starts checking /dev/sda5.
And "sudo mke2fs -n /dev/sda5" just gives me a "/dev/sda5 is apparently in use by the system" error.By the way I did all these steps just byollowing advices in other threads, so I do not necessarily understand what I did there.e .. is there a way I can get my files back? I would really, really hate having lost all that since my last backup is 3-4 months old (yeah, yeah, I know) and I have some quite rtant data on that filesystem.While there seems to be a big problem in that NOTHING seems to be working, GParted still recognizes the partition and how much of the disk space is in use .. so not everything can be lost - or am I wrong?

I'm COMPLETELY new to linux. I"m running Ubuntu 9.10 and TRYING to install Devede. I have tried the Terminal, Synaptic Manger, and the Add/Remove and still keep getting this same error. I'm running a regular 32 bit Pentium 3 process to test if I like Linux or not. this is what it says: E: /var/cache/apt/archives/libavcodec-extra-52_4%3a0.5+svn20090706-2ubuntu3_i386.deb: corrupted filesystem tarfile - corrupted package archive this is not a DUAL boot computer either.

My HP Netbook crashed. The Windows XP system files corrupted and Windows absolutely will not run. I planned on using Ubuntu to recover it, and then install Ubuntu permanently to save it in the future. Before you ask, every other utility has failed on me. UBCD included, which did nothing but provide me with errors upon errors just trying to run it.
The netbook has no CD drive.The only internet around is a wireless signal... my netbook has a broadcom wireless card that is never recognized. I'm using someone elses working laptop to connect online and get things I need, make boot devices, research for help, etc.This laptop has barely any hard drive space. Currently it has 1 gb remaining for doing anything.I have three flash memory devices:2 gb SD card. My netbook refuses to recognize it as a boot device.2 gb flash stick (that's actually an mp3 player). My netbook refuses to recognize it as a boot device.512 mb flash stick. This DOES work as a boot device.
So far my 512 mb flash stick has run Damn Small Linux and Ubuntu Minimal on my netbook. Of course, both are useless because the netbook cannot access internet, nor does either OS recognize my wireless card. This flash stick is, obviously, too small for a regular Ubuntu installation or any other Linux distribution that can help (as far as I know).
So, in order for this to work, I have to be able to do one of the following:
Install Ubuntu from a different OS, like Damn Small Linux or something small enough to boot on my 512 mb stick. Ubuntu can be put on one of the other, larger devices, maybe to be accessed for installation. No idea how to do this, let alone safely.
Install Ubuntu Minimal OFFLINE. This question was asked multiple times on these forums and none were answered. Is there a way to run minimal, and use offline sources for the install?
Get the normal Ubuntu installer under 500 mb. Its overwhelmingly frustrating that I'm just barely unable to do this. I've read of Ubuntu Customization Kit, which ended up being lots of useless files and reams of gobbldegook. I've heard Ubuntu is packed with additional, nonrequisite software which makes it so large. Why can't there be a halfway version between normal and minimal?? Not everyone has internet and not everyone has a CD drive or large USB stick! Is there a way this can be accomplished? Does this version exist?
I have limited time and resources. Before you ask, no, I cannot afford a larger USB stick. I'm pinching pennies right now and there's nowhere near here that sells them anyway.

I'm trying to install a package (mythTV backend - but im sure the package is not at fault) and I keep getting this errorcorrupted filesystem tarfile - corrupted package archiveNew build - ubuntu lucid 32bitI think it might be a hardware fault memory/hardrive/motherboard or somthing to do with an error in /home/ partition filesystem.To be honest im not sure and its driving me mentalWould consider anyones input on possible causes of a Corrupted filesystem. Crashed System left at root @ maintenance shell. Below is the sequence after boot, with Exact Errors. How to Salvage important files from my crashed laptop hardware.
A) Via a Transfer to a USB stick in Terminal, would be ok
B) Via SSH through the router from the good laptop that is Preferably using Nautilus / GUI, Terminal also ok (less confident of my skill here)
C) Directly Fixing Laptop and being ably to use Nautilus / GUI to Copy Files to USB stick, localy
The result of some effort:
A) the USB stick is good but Can't get in to it from the crashed laptop
B) SSH: No luck I get: "Cannot display location "sftp://192.168.1.101/"" from the good Machine
C) at a lose here...

In the crashed machine I can't seem to get into the USB anywhere that I think it should show up and trying to "mkdri" got me:
"Read only file system".

When I rebooted my system (RHEL 5.3 x86_64), I got the following error when it was booting up:

So to try and fix this, I booted from the OS disk and did a linux rescue.

I then reboot but now I get the errors:

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this? Was the fsck I did initially the correct thing to do to fix that initial group descriptor error or did I make things worse?

This is a Natty system. I ran update manager to update to the latest releases for Natty, and it crashed. I ran it again and it told me it could only do a partial upgrade, and that I should do apt-get install -f. I did that, but apt-get told me the system was locked by another program. Not to worry I thought, I'll just reboot. So I did that, and I think Update-Manager got a lot further through the process than I thought, because my system is borked. It'll boot into Gnome, but when booting up the Boot Screen no longer shows the pretty Ubuntu Logo, but rather a line of text that says "Ubuntu 11.04".
When it gets into Gnome the keyboard and mouse more or less don't work (although the keyboard based Fn+9 and Fn+10 brightness control still works) and there is no desktop background. After about 30 seconds something crashes but I can't click on it to find out what. Going into the recovery console doesn't help either. The latest Kernel (2.6.38-7) stops moving forwards after "Begin:Running /scripts/init-bottom...done". has occurred for the second time. Luckily I still have the previous kernel, which gets to the same spot and then tells me:
"init: udevtrigger main process (390) terminated with status 1" and then "init: udevtrigger post-stop process (394) terminated with status 1".
I then get the message
"The disc drive for / is not ready yet or not present. Continue to wait; or Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery". S goes back to "Begin:Running /scripts/init-bottom...done" a second time, M brings up the message:
"Root filesystem check failed. A maintenance shell will now be started"
and then it asks for the root password and gives me a terminal. Everything seems to be there, but apt-get and dpkg both can't do anything as the filesystem is read only.

I would like urgent solutions because my Sony laptop VGN-B55G cannot boot to any OS after installing Linux Ubuntu 9.10 onto its only hard drive. The hard drive originally had 32 bit Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 and Ubuntu was installed on its 20GB free space. After the completion and installation, I can only boot to the Linux command prompt with a message saying:

I have a dual boot drive, one is WinXp the other Ubuntu 10.04. I don't know why, but my ubuntu partition became corrupted (booting from live cd and inputing fdisk -l in the terminal, shoes my partition as unknown type) My Grub was on this partition, and therefore I cannot boot neither one of my two OSs. I would like to recover my linux partition, I figure I can do that only from my WinXp partition, but I don't know where and how to install Grub.
Also, If anyone knows how I could recover from the live CD without booting Windows, please speak up, that would make everything much easier. Another thing, it would be just super if I could recover my whole partition, not just the data, because I would hate to reinstall all the stuff that I had on my Ubuntu.

I have just replaced my decaying XP OS with Ubuntu just yesterday evening. Everything has been fine until today at around noontime, where the OS just crashed. I have not been able to boot up the OS ever since, neither from the HD or the LiveDisc which I have installed from. It happened to me again, I guess I need to ignore those updates but somehow I forget each time! This time it froze in middle of update no mouse no kybd no cap/num locks light nothing so I hard booted after an hour of wait, now I cannot boot at all. I go thru Grub menu then it says press S to skip and M to manually load. In most cases nothing works but I got to the prompt and put the root password but I dont have an IP address and cannot get 1? I did fsck -p but no errors. It says the OS is not on / or has been gone?

I originally wanted to dual install 10.10 64 Ubuntu with Windows 7 64 RAID 1 HP PC, but RAID got corrupted and I could find no fix online except using fakeraid unsupported software. The whole thing blew my muind. I gave up after 4 or so reinstalls of windows 7 to fix RAID. So I decided to install a dual boot 10.10 Ubuntu i86 with my old WinXP i86. I kept getting these errors at boot up: unknown filesystem, file not found, out of disk, no such partion and so on. I tried just about every grub reinstall I could find, including article here: "Recovering Ubuntu after Installing Windows."
After a number of tries my friend installed Ubuntu successfully, but then when I installed windows xp I am stuck here, again. I did do the Reload grub tutorials again as well. I may just give up on WinXP and have my friend reinstall Ubuntu for me.

I am writing this from a LiveDVD of 11.04. My machine, which is an Inspiron1501 with AMD64 dualcore crashed while running a working copy of 10.04LTS 32bit. At first Harddrived seemed unrecoverable, but not that may not be the case if I can mount it. I have a Windows XP/Windows 7 dual boot system. My problem: [URL]. I follow these instructions to the letter, the live "CD" works fine - using a USB stick, I do not have a DVD drive, in- or external -. When I try to install Ubuntu from the live system, it corrupts my master boot record, I get the Error: No Such Device #####################. After I fixed this I tried to install Ubuntu under windows, using the same usb's wubi installer. The install completes, I reboot, and after selecting Ubuntu in my boot menu, I get that likewise well known error with wubildr.mbr [URL]
Rebuilding the USB stick doesn't make any difference, it behaves the same way. The wubi installer has the very annoying habit of downloading the iso during the installation procedure every time, I don't know why I can't just select the iso downloaded in the first step of the above link. This way I cannot check any md5 because I have no idea where it downloads the iso. What should I do to get Ubuntu working? Reinstalling any of my Windows systems is not an option, it is every time like gambling, I am using the same installation files, but sometimes the result is just not the same.

I was upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 and the computer completely froze and I restarted it thinking I would be able to restart the update where I left off (I'm new to ubuntu). However when I restart I can't get anywhere, if I boot normally the ubuntu screen comes up and then it stops with the computer name in the middle of the screen and thats it (can't do anything i can't get into shell via ctrl-alt-f1 etc..) if i use the recovery from the grub menu it loads a bunch of things then stops i can't type anything but I can switch using ctrl-alt-f1 and ctrl-alt-f7 but I don't see anything except:
under ctrl-alt-f1 the last line reads:

When i again started the machine and tried to boot Ubuntu i m getting the following message in command screen:- "Minimal BASH-Like line editing is supported. I installed F15 a couple days ago without much difficulty (and upgraded the kernel to the most recent, along with all the accompanying applications). However, I wanted to enhance my experience with the terminals, etc. So, today, I installed a gnome-3 advanced tweak or something along those lines (I forget the exact name already). This is software that is supposed to allow us to specify user-defined shells (not active yet), modify the terminal bars, etc. After installation, a menu bar came up, which allowed me to run the application. I ran it and it crashed.
Then I went to the applications section and started that job again and the whole system just froze, showing just a rotating wheel (as if a process is in progress). Nothing worked. So, I manually shut the system down and turned it back on again; and all I saw was that turning wheel and a small half-inch by half-inch square box (with just noisy colors). I then inserted my F15 installation DVD (the same DVD I used to install my OS), and started the machine; and the response is exactly the same as before: just that turning wheel with the noisy small square box. When I move my mouse around the wheel moves about in response. But, the system is just frozen.

I have a centos 5.2 machine that seems to have a problem with xwin. upon a reboot it complains that gnome has crashed. my desktop bckground is 'there' my desktop resolution seems to have changed( maybe it was 1024 x 768 -- now 800x600??? )the toolbars that were across the bottom of the screen that held shortcuts to programs and things is now blank -- empty.what might i be able to do? also when i tried to update i get complaints about missing dependencies.

I have a desktop computer running Linux Mint 9 with the Gnome desktop (not sure what version -- though by default Mint 9 comes with Gnome 2.30). Last night I tried adding a panel to the desktop by right-clicking on the existing bottom panel and selecting "New Panel". Please note that I've already got another panel at the top of the desktop on the left side on autohide and no expand.
When I added another panel, it placed a normal panel on the right side of the screen without any problems. When I right-clicked on the new right-side panel and selected "Properties", I changed the orientation to "top" (where there was already a panel, if you remember). After that moment, it seemed like the entire desktop environment crashed. Everything was completely unresponsive -- the only thing moving on the screen was the mouse. I couldn't do anything with the gui, not even shut the computer down.
Since the gui shutdown wasn't working, I switched to a different tty screen, logged in, and ran a shutdown command with the option to reboot. The computer shut down fine, and when it woke back up, the same problem was still there: Nothing loaded on the screen except for the background image and the mouse, which was still able to move but nothing else. I have the computer set up to automatically log me in, so I know it's not crashing before the user prefs are being loaded...
After restarting it again and getting the same result, I switched to a different tty screen, logged in, and tried messing around with stuff to no avail. I did notice, however, that the computer was becoming evermore sluggish, and something printed on the screen stating that a program had been terminated because of "not enough memory". It seemed like some process was consuming WAY too much RAM by itself or a program was accidentally forkbombing the computer. ...All because I added a panel...?

When I updated Linux it crashed in the middle of the update. I think there was not enough disk space. I had a windows dual boot and tried to make the Linux partition larger but in doing that a crashed grub and can't use Linux or Windows. I tried super grub but it didn't work so I tried to fix the partitions with gparted live cd. It my disk just showed up as empty. I formatted it and re installed debian but it didn't work. I can see partitions but my computer won't boot.

I am very new to linux, and I have a question regarding the filesystem check (fsck). The power recently went out and when I tried to restart linux the following error appears:
*/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced it then goes on to say..
*An error occured during the file system check. Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot when you leave the shell. Give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D to continue) I wasn't sure what to do, but checked some other online forums and they suggested running fsck manually - so I typed in the root password - and used the command, "fsck -A -V ; echo == $? ==" it then gave the following message
*WARNING!!! Running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem may cause SEVERE filesystem damage
*Would you like to continue (y/n)
Again, I wasn't sure what to do so i just checked no. I then manually turned off the computer and was prompted at the beginning to press Alt-3. I was brought to another screen and it informed me one of the drives was degraded and suggested rebuilding the array. I tried doing this, but it still brings me back to the original error of, "/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced," and the process continues.
Also, when I tried to rebuild the array, I didn't backup any of the data on our home directory before doing this (which was probably a big mistake). After being prompted to type the root password, I was able to give the ls command and look at all the directories...the home directory where our data was stored was empty and I am afraid I may have lost some information. Is there a possibility that data was lost when I was trying to rebuild using the old drives?

I seemed to have crashed my X desktop and I never get a GRUB screen that allows me to boot into recovery. Long story short, I accidentally used metacity --replace (out of habit) when I lost my window decorations. This caused the panel and dash to crash and I couldn't get a terminal. So I forced a reboot and now I boot into a black screen every time. GRUB doesn't even give me my normal recovery mode option. After my BIOS posts it just shows me the purple splash screen then blackness. I have a LiveCD standing by but don't know where to go from there.

I was running a 2-partition hard drive, Windows Vista (lamentably) on one partition, and the other running Ubuntu. I began having trouble with the Vista partition, so I attempted to move as many of the files that I really wanted to keep as possible over to the Ubuntu partition, and then reformat and reinstall the Vista partition. As a result, I could no longer boot to Ubuntu, and I consistently got errors back from everything that I tried on the Vista partition.
The only way that I can now access anything on the hard drive is to insert the Ubuntu install disk, go into trial mode, then mount the partition. At long last, here is the problem: Is there anyway to possibly make the partition bootable again so that I could burn the files to a disk? From trial mode I can get to a number of the files on the mounted partition, HOWEVER, they are secured with the username and password of my user account on that partition. Is there any way that I can access the files from the trial mode by entering my username/password?
