Mar 13, 2010I once had wicd running at KDE startup as I was just playing around with it. The problem is I now have turned off rc.wicd and don't want to use wicd any more. Every time I start KDE it still asks for the root password which I cancel and it then tells me it can't connect to wicd's dbus. This is getting really annoying as I have been trawling through my ~ looking for the setting that starts this up. I just want wicd turning off completely and this message to go away.

I already have my headset plugged in but this doesn't mute the sound.

Jan 6, 2010I'd like you to know that I'm completely new to ubuntu. Just install it a couple of days ago. I have a bit problem with startup here, everytime I change anything in System > Preferences > Startup Applications it just keep coming back to default. I unchecked Penmount Utility, and it's checked again after next boot. Same thing happen when I add Guake Terminal. When I reboot, it's not there anymore. So basically, it seems that I can't configure my startup programs.

Oct 23, 2010I installed 10.10 yesterday, and now whenever I boot my computer it launches 3 or 4 windows on startup for apps that usually run in the tray (Rhythmbox, Pidgin, Skype, and the mounter for my memory card). I was wondering if there is a way to just launch the programs to the tray. It worked perfectly in Lucid.

Jan 1, 2011I have somehow gotten two instances of Mediatomb running on my Ubuntu 10.04.1 how to get rid of one of them.There is one copy running as a daemon on system startup - that's the one I want to keep.There is another copy running when I log in with my user account - this is the one I want to prevent from running.I have looked in my Startup folder in the GUI and also in my .profile script for my user account but I don't see any references to mediatomb there. Where else should I look?I think the daemon version is running via an entry in init.d, but other than where I've already looked I don't know how to find out how the second copy is getting initiated during login. It only seems to show up when I log in to the GUI on Ubuntu - not when I connect to the machine remotely via SSH.

Add netbook-launcher (if using 8.10) to your startup programs. Go to System>Preferences>Sessions and add entry for this command.
I went to sessions to do it and see Netbook Launcher listed and selected to add it but it prompts me with the following menu:

Comment
What do I put in these blanks so that I can set this up? For Command it gives me the option to browse.
Ubuntu :: Unable To Add/remove Startup Programs
Jan 21, 2010I'm unable to change startup programs. If I try and add or remove a program, any changes I have made seem to undo themselves. I suspect it might have something to do with being unable to save the session, but I really don't have a clue.
Just in case it makes a difference: I'm actually running Mint (Helena).

Mar 16, 2011I've found mentions of this problem in Lucid Lynx, but this is a recent development for my system, since I've been running Ubuntu since Gutsy Gibbon.On start up my gdm theme/icons appear for a second, but by the time I've entered my keyring password the theme reverts to the system default (what Synaptic package manager looks like). It also does not load my start up programs Gnome-Do and Screenlets. My theme only appears if I go into the Appearances menu, and Gnome-Do only starts if I pick it from the Accessories menu (and I've gone into Gnome-Do's preferences and clicked on "start GNOME-DO at login"). About once in a blue moon it will load everything correctly.

Feb 25, 2010I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed on my computer. I also have Galaxy (Nvidia) 9500 GT PCI-E card installed on it. I can get both monitors (Acer X223w) to work but every time I shut off the computer and turn it back on the second monitor is shut off. I just need to turn it back on using Nvidia X Server Settings. I have tried to save my X configuratin file but I keep getting an error of:" Unable to remove old X config backup file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup'. I have a feeling this is because I am not signed in as root. Is this correct? If this is the case is there a way to get to sign in as root not using the command lines? Otherwise they need to remove this button. I can manually create a backup (copy paste into a text file). I think. Getting back to my Xorg.conf file, I think I need to modify it to have two screens. I have also got some information on my video card using the lspci command. I think I need some information from this. I have written below (towards the bottom) what I think the file should be. Now before I do this, does anybody know of an easy way to back up my whole computer? With my luck I am about to screw something up big time. I think I can just get away with the text file that I copied from the Xorg. Worst case scenario I will just manually replace the file.

Okay, this is what I think I need to do: I tried to add color to make it easier to find the changes I made but for some reason I cannot. I will add **** on the end (right side) so my additions and questions will be easier to find.
Do I need to add another Device for the video? Doesn't make sense to me since I only have one video card. I was told it should be based on the # of chips on the card. So I guess I should have two of them since I have two outputs.

Mar 27, 2011I have been trying to stop some apps from starting up like bluetooth manager etc but everytime I untick it and then reopen the startup applications preferences it is still ticked!
I also have been trying to get Awn Dock to autostart so I add it and set the command as avant-window-navigator but the next time I reopen it is not there, I have also tried checking the tick under the Awn Dock Preferences - "Start Awn automatically" but this doesn't stick either - all the other setting do though. I have looked in the ~/.config/autostart folder and that has a Padlock on it with the owner as root - should this be the case or should I change permissions on it to myself?

May 16, 2010Recently I have had a run of random errors on boot up. Finally, the quit button, top right of the screen disappeared permanently. I am convinced it is because I added Evolution to the programs that start automatically when I login to Ubuntu (auto login). Evolution uses the Internet connection which hasn't been successfully established by the time it starts. In the past, this would crash Ubuntu. It seemed to be fixed by this stage, but maybe not. Is there some way of delaying the startup of a program in the automatic startup list - to give the rest of everything time to settle in - before it starts trying to use other startup resources?

Jun 12, 2010I was wondering if there is any tool or program that stores a copy of frequently used files eg. Binarys, program library's etc. in memory so when they are requested by the OS they load instantly. I'm asking because I have a system with plenty of ram but very slow hard disks. Having programs like opera and java/eclipse load from ram would greatly speed up their start time. Ideally they would be loaded into ram in the background after I log in. Of course all writes made to these files would have to be made to the files on disk for obvious reasons.I don't want the entire OS in ram because it will not fit, just frequently accessed files.

Sep 15, 2010I've recently acquire a new HDD and I've decided to use it for multimedia files.
So I've edited my fstab so it mounts this disk at startup.
What's more important, I've bind the folders in that disk (i.e. media/theDisk/Music) to a folder in my home directory (i.e. /home/me/Music) so I can have all the folder mounted at home (Mount the disk in /home/user is not possible because Nautilus start to whim about not being able to set some files in .nautilus or something, I believe its because it does not know which disk to save to or something like that)
So everything works fine, except for folder icons. When I open the home directory, all folders in the disk are shown with the Desktop default icon. Even if I change them (whether from home or from the mounted disk) the next time I open the home directory they are shown with the Desktop icon. Emblems are lost too.
