In Ubuntu 10.04, we're supposed to use the following command to stop the X server (assuming the usual Gnome desktop environment): Code: sudo service gdm stop. The problem is, this has never worked correctly for me. I see a bunch of messages about things being shutdown, then it hangs. I've waited up to several minutes for something to finally happen so I can log in to the command line, but nothing ever happens. What I've always ended up doing is pressing Ctrl+Alt+F4 to switch to a different console. I was then able to log in there and do stuff that required the X server to be shut down, such as installing Nvidia drivers.
Is that how it's supposed to work? It doesn't seem right. Can't post the error message where the command hangs, because obviously I have to be running the GUI to post here. But I'll jot it down next time I try the command.
whats the difference between restarting/stopping apache using 'service httpd restart/stop' and apachectl restart/stop. I know that using 'service httpd restart' is actually a script in /etc/init.d/httpd but what about apachectl?
I've some file with .sh extensions that runs some softwares. Now,how do I stop running that filesI know we run the command ./start_tomcat.sh to start the apache. Is there any command to stop that file/process or is it just kill the process to stop the process
I am trying to setup LDAP server on Ubuntu 10.04 and am sticking to the old /etc/ldap/slapd.conf file configuration.
I had to comment ldapi:/// from /etc/default/slapd since it was giving 'Address already in use error'. Also had to juggle with pid directory and file issues
After that I was able to start the slapd daemon (service slapd start) but now I am running into multiple issues:
1. Can't stop the service with service slapd stop
Code: ## Service stop returns 0, maybe because start-stop-daemon is not giving error #service slapd stop Stopping OpenLDAP: slapd. # echo $? 0
Will switching to BDB database resolve this ?Also can't I slapcat at non-root user ??
I am trying to give access to ONE single user to start and shutdown tomcat server. The problem being, when I enter syntax: username ALL= /etc/init.d/tomcat5, /usr/local/tomcat/webapps, PASSWD:ALL This gives the user access to start and stop tomcat but also gives user access to start and stop other services within /etc/init.d - such as httpd etc... What is the proper way to give user access to start and stop service, and limiting that power to only one service....
I see in /etc/init/ssh.conf that sshd is designed to start on filesystemstop on runlevel SI understand that runlevel S is single user.Which says to me that sshd is not stopped on shutdown (runlevel 0).Also, sshd is in /usr/sbin/sshd and furthermoresudo lsof -p <sshd_pid>shows that it uses lib files in /usr/lib.So, my question is, if sshd is not stopped on shutdown YET sshd uses files in /usr, then how can/etc/rc0.d/S40umountfsever successfully umount /usr during shutdown when /usr is on its own partition? sshd should still be using the files, meaning the file system is busy. right?Yet, I'm pretty sure that my shutdowns used to complete successfully. (Edit : I guess they didn't - see next post)
I have a HP Pavilion dv5t series . The fan won't stop running, it started running right after all those updates came thought. The fan starts right when you turn the computer on, and it won't stop. I have been experiencing some random log out, specially in times like downloading big files, and consequently messing up my downloads. It's like browsing internet, a few other applications opened an out of nowhere a black screen an command boot load and then log in screen asking for password. This has been happening since I installed natty. I experience any kind of crash alert, freezing or slowdown before it happens, just out of the sudden it happens.
Any advice, help? How do I report a bug without a clear idea of what's going on?
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 (I installed server then installed the desktop packages) I have tried "sudo update-rc.d -f gdm remove" I have also tried creating an inittab file in /etc with the line id:3:initdefault

All it is, when i select an url, any url on any application a box pops up with the options: open with firefox send url open with mozzilla open with opera
I use Pidgin as my IRC client. I set it to remember my passwords for the #linuxjournal and #ubuntu channels. As you can see in the picture, there is a tab titled Frigg. I don't know if Frigg is a user or bot or channel! How do I prevent it from appearing every time I start Pidgin? I closed it before but then it keeps coming back when I restart Pidgin!

I has a look at the release candidate today as a live DVD and found that my keyboard settings were incorrect. I was obliged to remove the USA settings from the keyboard layout.
When I reverted to Karmic I found that it was necessary to correct the keyboard settings back to UK as somehow or other the settings from the live DVD registered.
It might be worth watching for this when testing/using live DVD before full adoption
I installed 10.04 today and while messing around with it I decided to try syncing a folder. While it worked and the file in it was uploaded and removed when deleted I can't stop syncing the folder.

I choose a rotating background for the desktop (astronomical pictures). How can I stop this rotation and decide to keep a specific picture instead of letting the system rotate the background every few seconds?
I feel sure there must be an easy solution, but Im damned if I can find it. Im sure I've looked everywhere. Even when Im watching ....., the screen goes dark and when I touch the mouse, Im asked for my password again. It really is very very annoying. I go and make a drink, come back, and there it is again - I have to type my password again.
When copying files to USB drives, the file progress bar moves it 'bursts', sometimes doing nothing for long periods, then moving forward quickly and stopping again. It's almost like it is showing the transfer to the cache, not the transfer to the actual drive.
Whenever I turn on my computer, asks, (after I enter my login password) for the password for my "default keyboard settings" (or something like that) 4 times and my WEP 128 (whatever that is) password. I just hit "cancel" or the little "x" in the corner, but it's a bit of a nuisance to do it each time I turn on my computer.
How do I get Ubuntu to stop asking me for my password for so many things?
I have a HP Laptop with Ubuntu Hardy installed. The system beep makes rapid clicking sound at login window that slowly dissipate and clicking that, so far I can only fix by rebooting, when I play music, reboot after hibernating, and when waking up from suspend. I've turned the system beep off in System/Preferences/Sound but it doesn't do anything.
i installed it, but every time i start my system, sshd is running, but i can't find out where it's startup entry is located.Code:ls /etc/rc*.d | grep sshreturns nothing, which indeed is true, 'cause i removed the links from the runlevel directories. i checked the rc.local file which is empty and never added a line anywhere to start the ssh daemon explicit.i'm using the latest ubuntu with updates and everything (at least i think so). in my gnome startup application preferences the only thing related to ssh is the ssh key agent. but if i deactivate it, sshd still startsup.
Code: sudo update-rc.d -f ssh remove didn't helped either
How do I stop a printer from printing? Here's what happened- I started to print some PDF stuff and then changed my mind. The printing job hadn't finished so I just clicked on the printer icon and selected QUIT. Well, of course that didn't work so I just turned the printer off......same result- when I turn the printer back on it keeps on printing the same stuff. How do I stop the printer from continuing and delete all print jobs?
