Every time I try to do anything with Abiword it crashes. I installed everything for it and in versions of Ubuntu before 9.10 it worked fine. How do I get Abiword in Ubuntu 9.10 to stop crashing?
View 7 RepliesI have another opera browser problem,i upgraded to version 10.53 build 6330 last week. it keeps crashing the cpu goes to 100% and wont come down, i had this problem with the previous version but its a lot worse with the new version.
also noticed that when browsing ebay the scroll is very jerky until you get about a third of the way down the page then it scrolls ok again.
i get the feeling the crashes are something to do with the flash player.
i tried to uninstall flash but i cannot get it to uninstall .
I have no idea what the program does, but I'd like to find out.

View 9 Replies View RelatedAbiword is splitting words at the end of sentences. If I go to the end of the line and nudge the word, it will wrap but I get an extra space. I can usually delete the space. Sometime, the word will wrap correctly if I continue typing but this is not the typical case.
I know this is not a problem with OpenOffice but I don't want to install 70MB of program just to get a simple word processor.
Is it possible to drag and drop the icons you want from the standard and formatting toolbars onto just one toolbar? then I can claim some more vertical space?What do most people here use on ubuntu? Abiword or Writer?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've just moved all my machines from Ubuntu to Squeeze and am currently trying to remove Open Office. When marking for removal and uninstalling OO the package manager requires that AbiWord and associated suite of office apps be installed as a replacement. I would like to completely purge both as I have little to no need for them, and the little I do use a word processor for I tend to use cloud based solutions. Is there a way to resolve the dependency that seems to exist that requires one or the other to be on the system at any given time?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've found that Abiword, which I prefer to Libre Office, when minimised does not remain arrowed on the launcher in 11.04, so it effectively can't be minimised. Can it be made to do this? I've clicked a few icons on the launcher like Brasero's and Synaptic's and found that they still all behave properly but I'm guessing there are other programs that have the Abiword glitch.

View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter upgrading I also updated abiword and wv from slackbuilds.It complains it can't find libwv-1.2.so.3, although libwv-1.2.so.4 exists.Making a symbolic link gets it to start, although then it complains about libpng and hwile it starts the toolbar icons are not displayed, instead with red X's in their place.What is needed to get abiword easily working on 13.1?

I tried the instruction here: [URL] It did nothing. How can I make Abiword usable? It doesn't have to be lightning fast, all I want is for it to scroll at the same speed and with the same responsiveness as all my other applications.
I suppose this is a Gnome 3-specific question as with Ubuntu 10.04 I had a way of getting the word processor AbiWord to open larger than it does in Fedora 15. True enough it's not a great loss, the extra two seconds it takes to manually maximise the window, but as other programs open how you last had them I'm wondering if I can alter things for Abiword.

I am a graduate student writing a dissertation in modern history. More than half of my computer work takes place on a word processor.I take notes, make outlines, and then write drafts of papers, chapters, presentations, etc. I regularly have to share these files with others who use operating systems other than Linux.I have just switched from OS X (after 5 years and half of using Mac) and I am still figuring out how to write my next dissertation chapter in Ubuntu.
There seems to be no consensus on what is or what are the best word processing softwares -- especially for academic writers -- in Ubuntu or Linux for that matter.I have read a number of posts on various forums and I find them either dated by several years or not dealing with the problems I am facing :
namely writing a serious, book-length academic work in the humanities and desiring to work with a user-friendly and fast word processor that would also be powerful enough to accomplish most or all academic tasks such as footnotes, style change, bibliography, accessibility, etc. There are people who suggest using LaTeX (LyX, Kile, etc.) but it seems to me that they're mostly based in the exact sciences and benefit from the math and science features that exist in LyX or another LaTeX editor. LaTeX is moreover not very accessible to those who do not know the LaTeX language or do not have an editor and work primarily with a word processor: meaning that when I share a LaTex document with my colleagues they have difficulty editing my work. My own personal experience with OpenOffice.org has not been very positive. It's pretty slow and has problems with multiple language input. Switching from Nisus Writer Pro and Mellel (both OS X softwares), OpenOffice.org Word Processor seems also not very user-friendly. It seems to follow the design of MS Word (or what MS Word used to be) and feels above all *cluttered.* I am however trying to like it as I understand there's probably no other word processor better than OpenOffice.org in Ubuntu. Am I correct to assume this? I also downloaded Kword which in terms of interface and egronomic design seems quite nice. It is also a bit faster -- although I don't know how powerful Kword is at the moment and whether it can accomplish all that my academic work requires from a word processor. I have also read somewhere that AbiWord is really not all that powerful. It is meant to be a fast but "lean" word processor which would do basic things quickly.
I have tried, and I think succeeded installing this font. Geneva Font It seems to work and scale fine in AbiWord and and OOwriter, but it does not display in firefox, it is horrible. The above link shows a sample which is really very bad at all levels of zoom. This site (I think this is the same problem) is also terrible, until I zoom to a very large size, when it smooths out. (browser.display.auto_quality_min_font_size;0) Here are screenies, if your browser shows the pages OK: The last one is magnified in an image editor. I had to comment ldapi:/// from /etc/default/slapd since it was giving 'Address already in use error'. Also had to juggle with pid directory and file issues
After that I was able to start the slapd daemon (service slapd start) but now I am running into multiple issues:
1. Can't stop the service with service slapd stop

I ran Ubuntu 10 from a USB flash drive on my HP Desktop with an AMD Athlon processor (2.16 GHz), 512MB or RAM, and 160 GB of hard drive disk space. I gained access to the Internet and ran my e-mail program (Verizon). After about 10 minutes, the session froze. Not knowing the equivalent of Windows Task Manager, there was nothing I could do but do a cold boot. Are there setting that I can change that will prevent my sessions from crashing while using Ubuntu from a flash drive?

I have Ubuntu 10.04 32bit on two machines and the one my parents has been crashing/having other issues a lot (the other is fine). I build my own PCs, and this one I built for my parents as a budget build as they basically use the internet and upload photos, that's it. It's got an AMD 64 3800+ processor, a GeForce 8400GS, 1 Gig of Corsair DDR2 (this passed 8 hours of memtest), an ASUS M2A-VM mobo and a 320GB WD HDD.
The crashes initially and may still be, GUI/graphics related. The biggest problem is they would boot up the system and there would be no GUI, it just never loaded so they would hard reboot. The other thing that would happen, when it went into screensaver mode, moving the mouse wouldn't bring up the password prompt, it wouldn't do anything just leave a black screen with no mouse, it would lead to a hard restart. These problems initially occurred on an older HDD that used to have windows xp on it that my parents loaded with viruses. Of course that HDD had been reformatted for Ubuntu, but I felt that it was damaged and these problems were related so I went and got a new Western Digital one for them and installed it with fresh installs of Ubuntu 10.04 (and a dual boot of Windows 7) but these crashing issues have persisted.
I found a fix on here that had me "force" the GUI to load each time via the terminal, which seems to have worked somewhat and the GUI loads more often. However, every now and then on boot up, parts of the GUI do not load and a window pops up asking that I delete elements from the panel. Again, this leads to a restart, except now sometimes when it reboots it gets to a DOS prompt (sorry, old windows user) of sorts that asks for a system password, when entered, nothing happens and requires another hard restart. These restarts tend to happen in chains leading to DOS prompt a faulty GUI or a GUI with missing elements.
There are also other general issues. Periodically desktop icons won't launch programs and or menu items will not load programs when selected, just nothing happens. When browsing the net with Opera or trying to open the recycle bin, the screen will just go black.I also messed around with the built in Nvidia Driver finder tool under system - administration-hardwaredrivers, tried the recommended and not recommended drivers, no difference. I've booted into recovery mode on the grub menu tried fixing and updating things via the menu options, still get one of the above issues.This system is up to date with system updates as well. I'm not sure what else to do, but I still have a sinking suspicion this is caused by some kind of graphics driver problem or maybe a problem with that graphics card in particular! I've installed Ubuntu fresh on this machine 3 total times, the latest install only last month when I created a dual boot with Win7.
VLC started to crash today, after (I think?) updating to KDE 4.5 . I'm not sure if it's the update's fault, as it was also today that I switched to KDE from GNOME. All I know is, that up until now, VLC was very stable, it never crashed. Now, it will start only to close in a few seconds later. I tried re-installing it, but it didn't work. It doesn't matter if I open a file directly, or start it from a terminal/menu. If I start it from a terminal, this is what I see:

I rebooted my computer and there was strangely 2 audio icons next to the clock. I right clicked 1 and removed it from the bar. Now I can t seem to get that bar to quit flashing. I tried the recovery console. to repair any broken packages. Still flashing. I can't seem to get any programs open. What could be causing this issue and how I can fix it?
