Ubuntu :: Can't Install Gnome

Jan 24, 2010

It all started when ubuntu suddenly got blocked and i had to restart the computer manually. After restarting it, it said the filesystem has errors and forced fsck. it never ended successfully so i used the live cd to fsck from terminal. then it booted regularly.... and then there was no GNOME option in the login menu... i have LXDE and from there i looked in the synaptic and GNOME wasn't installed and when i tried to install it, it said that it is dependent on two conflicting packages :

gnome:
Depends: swfdec-mozilla but it is not going to be installed
Depends: epiphany-extensions but it is not going to be installed

and i can NOT install both of them they are conflicting packages therefore i can NOT install gnome.

OpenSUSE Install :: Install Error - Config Defaults For GNOME For GNOME Power Manager Have Not Been Installed Correctly

Mar 4, 2010

Things were running fine until GNOME misbehaved;

GNOME failed to load telling me:

Install error, Configuration defaults for GNOME power manager have not been installed correctly.

So I

Code:

To the shell and check the logs in gdm and find this:

Could not ask power manager if user can suspend, launch helper exited with unknown return code 0.

So I try

Code:

To see if another user will get the desktop; I get the error

Cant create etc/passwd no space left on device.

So I

Code:

And get the following

I insert a usb drive to prepare for back up; Run

Code:

On the shell to get the usb device name; Then run

Code:

To mount the device.

I end up with:

Cant create lock file /etc/mtab~ 4610 No space left on device(use -n flag to override)

So, I

Code:

And see 9 partitionitions

Code:

Again to check which ones are loaded at boot up time and get

plus some other file systems mounted at boot up, but not mapping to any physical partitionition.

I try

Code:

On partition9 and get warnings because its mounted, so I chicken out and try

Code:

And run into the error:

cant create lock file /etc/mtab~4832 no space left on device (use -n flag to override)

Good thing is there is a

Code:

Since space is a problem, I

Code:

On partition6 which is not mounted at boot up time and try to

Code:

I still get the error

cant create lock file /etc/mtab~4735 no space left on device (use -n flag to override

Code:

For package update tells me

cant open /var/run/zypp.pid in mode w

Code:

For power management tells me its not even recognised as a command.

Fedora :: Error Gnome-desktop3-3.0.1-2.fc15.x86_64 When Choose A Minimal Install Then Add ONLY The Defaults Of The "GNOME Desktop" Package

May 3, 2011

I noticed that in Fedora 15 Beta when you choose a minimal install then add ONLY the defaults of the "GNOME Desktop" package, you will get this error: gnome-desktop3-3.0.1-2.fc15.x86_64 has a required package:

system-backgrounds-gnome

When I look for gnome-desktop3-3.0.1-2.fc15.x86_64 it is not on any installation menu list. I prefer gnome, but installed KDE and that worked. Any ideas of getting gnome to work?

Apr 24, 2011

I've just installed 11.4 and then updated to gnome 3. I've noticed that Nautilus doesn't appear to mount my windows NTFS partition. I find this odd because both Ubuntu and Fedora detect and mount it just fine in Gnome 3 (I've been trying all 3 this week).

Ubuntu :: Fix Common Gnome 3 Install In 11.04?

Apr 28, 2011

This guide isn't going to be updated anymore, as there is gNatty, and I've switched to Lubuntu. The reason? GDM kept crashing and issues kept coming up that reduced the overall functionality of my own computer. The PPA seems like it changes slightly to where things may break, if something does break, try to run: sudo apt-get install gnome-shell gnome-session again, as it looks like a lot of the time gnome-shell and gnome-session aren't being installed. FIX for issue opening certain applications (like games) Do the following in terminal:

Code:
echo "PATH="/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games"" | tee -a ~/.profile Logout and log back in and that should fix the issue. NOTE: You have to do this for each user that logs into the system if they can't access games or that. FIX for .ICEauthority issue! There's another method besides this one, and it involves just installing the following:

Ubuntu Installation :: How To Install Gnome 3 On 10.04 LTS

Jun 11, 2011

I intend to install Gnome 3 on My Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and have found these instructions by goggling around a bit.

Need to verify if this is fine and will not break anything.

1) Install Dependencies

2) Download the Source

3) Build GNOME 3

This command will download the latest source code and build GNOME 3. GNOME Shell includes 40+ packages that need to be downloaded and built. This can take a significant amount of time to complete so be patient. $ jhbuild build

4) Keep GNOME 3 Up to Date

You are running the bleeding edge version of GNOME 3 and because of this the code in the git repositories will be constantly changing. To test the latest changes after your initial insallation simply run the following command. This automatically update your local copy of the source code and rebuild if there are any changes to GNOME 3 package or its dependencies.

Ubuntu :: Dead After Gnome 3 Install

Jul 17, 2011

After upgrading to 11.04 I did not like Unity. I found procedures to switch to Gnome 3 and, without reading reports about problems with it, I followed one. When it called to reboot I get good purple then blink then purple with word ?? UBUNTU..? then black screen with some misaligned messages about batteries and last one about CUPS. And this screen is a dead end.

I found advices to remove ?gnome-accessibility-theme? and install standard theme. My problem is that my only system is plain Unix without network from ?recovery mode?. I tried to ifconfig but I don?t know how to get WiFi to start on this Dell laptop. I remember I spend a lot of time to get right drivers for my first Ubuntu. I have no way to remember what I did to have it working.

My question is: how to switch back to Unity (and wait for fixed Gnome 3) or how to fix Gnome 3 from ?recovery mode?? (I would like to avoid install from scratch because I don?t remember what I did to install all drivers to have functional Ubuntu).
