Ubuntu :: Can't Install Packages With Space In Name From Terminal
Mar 1, 2011
I'm having trouble installing any packages with 2 or more words in their name. Single word ones install perfectly w/o any problems however. I've tried everything from quotation marks to backslash before the space but nothing seems to work & I keep getting the same Error. Here's an example (adobe air from software center):
steve@Vaio:~$ sudo apt-get install adobe air

Running:
ASUS Laptop X71SL series
GeForce 9300M GS 512 MB
Ubuntu Karmic
I can't install packages via the terminal. For example: sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager
Doesnt work. It gives me:
Lser paketlistor... Frdig
Bygger beroendetrd
Lser tillstndsinformation... Frdig
E: Kunde inte hitta paketet compizconfig-settings-manager
Swedish there hehe, but basically it says the it couldnt find the the package named "compizconfig-sett.This problems occurs in several situations. Every single package i try except "upgrade" fails to find a package.
Also, the package manager "Ubuntu Software Manager" and Synaptic arent giving me any solutions. Same problems. Packages arent available and such. I have a working internet connection and the GPU drivers are installed. Everything is updated. sudo apt-get install update/upgrade is done and also done in the general update manager.

I did install Fedora 14 on my netbook (Asus 1001PX) a couple of weeks ago, it worked nice. But when i try to install .RPM packages the "normal" way so do i get stuck at the window where it says something like "Package Installed". No matter how many times i try to click on the "Close" button, so is the "Package Installed" window still open. Atleast i can install .RPM packages with the terminal.

Whenever I do sudo apt-get or use the Ubuntu Software Center, I can't download anything because a message comes up saying "Action requires installation of untrusted packages: The action would require the installation of packages from not authenticated sources." I've been trying to download GIMP and Thunderbird, so... I dunno what the problem is.

I just upgraded from 11.2 to 11.4 and the installation/upgrade worked just perfect. I than followed the instructions in the "New User How To/FAQ", "Multimedia and restricted format" post. I was following the instruction in the 11.4 section. I added the additional repositories as explained. I then was on the section where it talks about going into software management and selecting the "Packman" repository and clicking to "switch systems packages" to the versions in this repository (packman). I than click this link and the "warning" screen appears and I am present with conflict resolution after conflict resolution dialog. It just seems that there are some many conflicts, it just seems wrong and I canceled.
The installation/upgrade appears to have worked just fine. My mail is there, audio and dvd play back worked the first try after the upgrade. I am not clear if this is what I should expect or their is something wrong or if I even need to complete this step for a successfully installation.

I was going to try out E16 and installed it via apt-get install. It ran through the usual of retrieving the required dependencies and whatnot, but as it was "setting" everything up as Debian usually does when installing packages, it seemed to take forever, to install a measly 6 or so megabytes.
Why is this? I regularly run "apt-get autoremove", "apt-get autoclean", and "apt-get clean", as well as check for orphaned packages and residual configs in Synaptic. Also, for some reason, Synaptic finds more packages left behind than the terminal finds.

The space in the volume name seems to disagree with fstab and terminal, I can't change the volume name either as I do not have access to Windows at this time. Is there a way I can help fstab or the terminal to recognize the space in part of the volume name?

Wish a script which would delete cache content and remove additional files which have been downloaded via the internet and saved voluntarily by the user and files any thing other than those used by the OS in linux.Need a command which could make the execution of the above script possible before the shut down command is passed.

I've been playing around with two tiling window managers, scrotwm, and xmonad. I like xmonad better, but that's not the point. The point is that they both produce these strange black bars at the bottom when a terminal window is opened. Note that this does not happen in fluxbox/openbox, my other wm.
Its hard to explain, so please see the screenshots: [URL]
Note the black bar, or just dead at space the bottom of the the terminal windows. In the third image, the prompt is at the "bottom" of the window, or what should be. Again, this only happens in scrotwm and xmondad, no other wm's I've tested.

I'm considering making a switch from Ubuntu/Linux Mint to Fedora 15 because I just adore, love, cannot be without Gnome Shell any longer. SELinux - I actually am finding I hate this program as it blocks certain plugins (like Java), some programs I run it blocks functionality, etc. What's the best way to disable it or make it more like Ubuntu where it's pretty much permissive of everything. Common Apps I use - I haven't checked the repos, but at the least I use the following (some I know work, but I can't remember the specific ones I want to know if I need to compile or if it's in the repos)
a - Snes9x
b - PCSX Reloaded
c - KeepNote
d - libdvdcss2 and libdvdread4
e - MP4, MP3, AVI, MPEG, OGG, OGV codecs (I think I've converted any others like WMA and WMV... wait I have a few WMA files, crap)
f - Flash 64-bit - this one I have issues with SELinux wise, (reason for first question)
g - VirtualBox - it runs so much faster under Fedora so I know this one works
h - Sun Java
RPMs - Fedora uses RPMs right? Is there like an DEB Alien to convert DEBs to RPMs? Apache2 - Now maybe I found this as httpd or lightppd or something, but why isn't it listed as Apache2 in the repos? I'm more or less guessing that Fedora is not a "rolling" release, is there a variant or version that is or a repo I can enable? A software center, other than Synaptic; I'm pampered when it comes to Ubuntu Software Center and that, is there anything like that in Fedora that isn't Synaptic? What's the terminal command for installing packages, is it zypper or is that OpenSuSE?

Logical Memory Space of 4GB is divided in to 3GB User Space and 1GB Kernel Space. Always. Correct?
1. How can we change it? (just changing value of PAGE_OFFSET is okay?)
2. If system have only 256MB of memory (embedded system) and suppose Kernel Modules eat away all the memory during boot. User space will be left will no memory. Is this case possible?

Just installed and started to use the suse11.4 two weeks ago when my Win7 broke down. Now I got a new Win7 recovery disc from my laptop manufacturer, and want to install a Win7 accompanying with the suse11.4.
My question is how to clear up a free space in HD to install win7? Currently, I have 3 partitions that are sda1, sda2 and sda3 with space 2G(swap), 20G(root) and 270G(home) respectively. I want to free up half space from sda3 to install Win7, how to do it without delete the data on it? One weird thing is that my HD totally is 320G, but when I installed SUSE, only 300G was usable and the other 20G is missing until now. The fdisk -l command info. is showed below:

I've lost the ability to Install or Un-Install Packages on my Advent 4213 Netbook running Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop Edition. I keep getting an error message saying Previous installation hasn't been completed
The installation could have failed because of an error in the corresponding software package or it was cancelled in an unfriendly way. You have to repair this before you can install or remove any further software.
every time I try to Install or Un-Install Packages using Ubuntu Software Centre. Is there a way to repair my Install without having to resort to doing a clean Re-Install?

I have searched everywhere for the error I am getting which pertains to "E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)" I came across this when I was trying to uninstall dovecot through apt. This is what I am doing:
Quote:
# apt-get --purge remove dovecot
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
[code]....
I have tried the following:
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get -f install
apt-get clean
dpkg -P courier-pop-ssl
dkkg --remove courier-pop-ssl
None of these seem to work in efforts to unblock what I am trying to ultimately do, which is uninstall dovecot.

I've got an ASUS eee1005 that I'm trying to load eeebuntu -- I've read good things about it! However, I managed to get it (partially) installed using only unetbootin and the eeebuntu-nbr iso. Luckily I've got other working laptops in the house, or I'd be stuck because now I've got a partially installed distro that isn't allowing me usage of my wireless. Basically, what I'd like to do is be able to go back to the install process and load all the packages I want, which, hopefully, will give me NetworkManager so that I can finally connect. I can boot to the thumbdrive (8gig, btw) but I don't think I've got the right files on it to do the install. Here's what appears on the thumbdrive:
[code]...
I would think that with these files on the thumbdrive, it could find its way into the install process. Apparently not. I've read most, if not all of the 'install from USB' threads and how-to's, and it's still not working right - Now, having a partially installed distro (with GUI that's not GNOME, or KDE. . ?) Are there any options I can use to pickup where the install left off and start adding packages? Or should I just scrap it and re-install?

I'm setting up a friend's old Thinkpad with Linux Mint 9 (or maybe 10). I would like to set it up with separate partitions for /root and /home, which would make it easier to save his data and settings should we need to reinstall later on. I picked Mint because he's not exactly computer literate, so I'm trying to make this as painless as possible for him, and since I'm going to be the guy doing the work, should the need arise, I want to make things easier on me.
Problem is that the machine only has a 40g hard drive. I know he's not going to be installing many programs, mainly a browser, some music apps, a DVD player, and OpenOffice. I'm trying to figure out how much space to allocate to /root so I dont' have to resize it in a few months.
