Apr 26, 2011

I'm trying to install alien on an Ubuntu 10.0.4 server, which happens to be a virtual host on an ESX 4 Vmware server, in case that matters.I have a lot of experience with various Unixes over the years, especially Solaris, but we're just getting going with Linux servers here.

dstrom@webserver:~$ sudo apt-get install alien

Slackware :: Install Kde 4.5 From Alien's?

Aug 16, 2010

I am using current and want to install kde 4.5 from alien's, here is my problem. I don't understand the statement below. Below are the steps you take to install or upgrade to KDE 4.5.0. First, change your current directory to where you found this README. From within this directory, you run the following commands as root.

On Slackware 32-bit:

# upgradepkg --reinstall --install-new x86/deps/*.t?z
# upgradepkg --reinstall --install-new x86/kde/*.t?z

There is 1 dependent needed and it is installed but I can't figure out how to go any further. Do I need to add him to my mirror list or what?

OpenSUSE Install :: Authorization Entry - Error No Space Left On Drive

Oct 13, 2010

We had a perfectly working SUSE OES netware server for some months, and wanted to create a new image backup. Using Acronis Backup and Recovery Advanced Server Software. This worked a treat on our SBS 2008 Server. We went to run it for Novell OES and a system lock up occurred and services such as Iprint then disabled. A server restart recovered the server after a few attempts. We then learnt that the server could not write files to an NTFS formatted USB drive. This was the ideal destination to test the backup. However we could not even write a simple file to the drive without an error message about permissions.

We then learnt that Linux needs a package called NTFS-3G to enable NTFS writing permissions. This did fix the writing issues. We attempted to run another back up which again failed, bringing down the server. We again attempted to reboot the server this time we fail to get to the graphical user login. At the suse Linux Enterprise boot screen we select "boot from hard disc". Which fails immediately with "GDM could not write a new authorisation entry to disk...Error no space left on drive". When the boot eventually continues, a number of things fail with the same message about "No space left on device".

The next message starts "Could not start the X server due to some internal error."

Further to the above, starting "recovery" instead, the checks of partition fail and it seems obvious that the partition definitions have become corrupted. In the expert partion manager the lines for partitions seem correct except that there are no entries for 'mount point' and 'mount by' columns. Trying to edit these lines does not appear to allow entries for mount point or mount by - they are disabled. It seems likely the server is not mounting some partitions at boot which is why the kernel thinks the server is full. Is there some simple way we can use say fdisk to repair the partition definition without loosing anything of the server OS and data ?

OpenSUSE Install :: Suse11.4 - Clear Up A Free Space In HD To Install Win7 ?

Jul 9, 2011

Just installed and started to use the suse11.4 two weeks ago when my Win7 broke down. Now I got a new Win7 recovery disc from my laptop manufacturer, and want to install a Win7 accompanying with the suse11.4.

My question is how to clear up a free space in HD to install win7? Currently, I have 3 partitions that are sda1, sda2 and sda3 with space 2G(swap), 20G(root) and 270G(home) respectively. I want to free up half space from sda3 to install Win7, how to do it without delete the data on it? One weird thing is that my HD totally is 320G, but when I installed SUSE, only 300G was usable and the other 20G is missing until now. The fdisk -l command info. is showed below:

Ubuntu :: How Much Partition Space For A New Install

Mar 4, 2011

I'm setting up a friend's old Thinkpad with Linux Mint 9 (or maybe 10). I would like to set it up with separate partitions for /root and /home, which would make it easier to save his data and settings should we need to reinstall later on. I picked Mint because he's not exactly computer literate, so I'm trying to make this as painless as possible for him, and since I'm going to be the guy doing the work, should the need arise, I want to make things easier on me.

Problem is that the machine only has a 40g hard drive. I know he's not going to be installing many programs, mainly a browser, some music apps, a DVD player, and OpenOffice. I'm trying to figure out how much space to allocate to /root so I dont' have to resize it in a few months.

Ubuntu :: Cannot Install Antivirus / Have No Disk Space

Apr 8, 2011

I just installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu and after running it for a few days I am having some strange issues. First, I cannot access the Applications men. When I click on the tab it highlights but I do not get a drop down menu. Also, I am being told when I boot up that there is no hard disk space. If I go to places->computer and check hard disk properties I am told that there is 66MB of space (I have a 640MB drive and only Ubuntu is installed). I think I have a virus but I cannot install an antivirus because I "have no disk space" and can't access the terminal through applications.

OpenSUSE Install :: Cannot Install 12.1 M5 From Hard Disk - Error - No Repository Found

Sep 13, 2011

I would like to test 12.1 M5 on my real hardware, so I have special for this purpose two additional partitions (sda2 (to install milestone) and sda3 (to store installation ISO files)). I am running my stable 11.4 with Grub on sda1.

I do not like to burn DVDs just for short test of one milestone, so I was used to download DVD ISO, to unpack it to sda3 partition with all its files, then I changed Grub to boot install Linux from sda3. Installation complains there is no DVD or CD, then I chose to force installation from hard disk and select sda3 partition and select root directory "/". As I was used to from 11.4 this will start installation as it would be started from DVD.

But I think the problem has appeared since 12.1, where I get message: No repository found. (on sda3 / ), so the installation does not start.

I know this is not official way to install openSuse, but it worked before, and it was fast and easy for me, to install from hard disk.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Not Recognizing Free Space On Install?

Nov 13, 2010

I had ubuntu 8.10 installed, but support was no longer offered - I wasn't able to upgrade software etc. I decided to upgrade to 10.04 today. I made the boot disk as normal, but when I went to install it I got the message "This computer has no operating systems installed". The only options were to wipe the entire hard drive or create my own partitions.

I have Windows Vista installed, so I deleted the partition which had ubuntu 8.10 (and also the swap file partition) so I now have free space on the computer. However, in Vista this shows up as an extended partition with Dell MediaDirect.

When I go back to the 10.04 installer, it still does not recognize my Vista installation, and only gives me the option of wiping the HDD. From googling and searching these forums, it appears as though the problem is that the free space and the Dell MediaDirect partitions overlap and this is why the free space is not recognized by ubuntu.

Ubuntu :: Partitioning Disk Space And 10.10 Install Requirements?

Apr 13, 2011

I am testing release 10.10 of Ubuntu desktop from a USB boot drive. It looks great so far, and I am thinking of installing it on the machine. However, I would like to know the disk space requirements. I know I could look them up, Also, while working with the interface I accessed all of the machines devices from the Linux OS and saw that I could partition an existing partition. However, that houses the Windows XP SP3 installation and I was wondering if altering partition size would wipe its contents.

I would be awsome if I could dynamically alter the partition to the size required by Ubuntu plus some slack for applications and the like so I could have both OSs on the same machine without having to reformat the drive for dual boot and re-install both OSs.
