Is there anyway that I can prevent access to the hosts file, or any file for that matter, for a time that I can specify, so that within that time no one will be able to open and edit the said file?

After I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10, my /etc/hosts, which had been previously edited by me, restored to default. I configured it again and was able to work for a while - untill I went offline. Each time I go offline since the upgrade, Ubuntu restores this file to default deleting my domains from it.

I'm trying to block a site for a certain time.How to Block(deny) perticuler website in certain times of the day , by using squid ? and it seemed promising.I added the lines to my squid.conf
acl office_time time MTWHF 3:00-21:00
acl bad url_regex "/etc/squid/block.acl

created a block.acl in the same directory and restarted it.

Well, as many proxy applications, GNOME Network Proxy Preferences only allow to ignore hosts. What I want to do is exactly the opposite. I only want to use the proxy for few sites. Is it possible to define only the allowed hosts in any way?
PS: I know FoxyProxy add-on for Firefox does this, but 1)I don't use Firefox and 2)I want the proxy settings system wide not only for browser.

I run a small home server (Debian 4), which acts as my gateway to the internet (ie, firewall) and runs a web server, dhcp, dns, and acts as a file server to the rest of the machines on my home network. Now I know it's never a smart idea to have all those services running on the same machine that is acting as a firewall, but I don't fancy running multiple servers just for home use, as it's mainly allowing me to learn system administration.
I noticed a few days ago that my internet had become unbearably slow, to the point where I could sometimes not load web pages. I spent a while searching through log files on my gateway, to try and find out what was eating up all of my bandwidth. When I came to apache's access.log file, I was confronted with this:

Multiple requests to my server, for totally random websites. I didn't even know it was possible to make those types of queries to a webserver. The only thing that is on the web server is a browser based torrent client. I have only shown a small snippet of the log file, but there are around 90k lines to different web addresses, from many different IPs. What I want to know, is what is happening? :S Why is someone querying MY web server, for web sites totally unrelated to it? And most of all, how can I stop it. My initial was to try and use iptables to block multiple requests from the same ip within a certain time frame, which I think would work as the server shouldn't really get many queries from external networks.
I'm trying to use ssh-keyscan to get some known_host file population going on, but I have a ton of hosts I want to scan, all with multiple aliases in /etc/hosts. Is there a way to use my current /etc/hosts file to do an ssh-keyscan instead of making a special list of hosts that (from what I've read) ssh-keyscan needs?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been having a lot of trouble lately with installing from CD/DVD. The DVD reader/writer on this laptop is new. Nevertheless, trying to install Ubuntu onto an exernal HD, I get 'input output error on sr0 logical block (a large number) After a long time the booting proceeds to a point, but I never get the actual installation started, and have to shut down manually.
The CD is fine, says the Ubuntu-checker. I just installed using my sons laptop, and there was no trouble. Question: does this indicate a motherboard failure? A memory block damaged? Do you know of a diagnostic tool I can use to check the reading of a CD/DVD?

It takes me a while to log in the splash screen just sits there for ages before i get to the desktop. Never used to be this slow and I'm not sure why. Firstly, I'm running Ubuntu 11.04, standard DE. I do have conky starting up in a script but it has the & at the end of the line so I didn't think this would cause it (or is there some special case for log in time on how & is treated?). However as a test I will comment out the line in the script and see if it is the cause.
However just for general knowledge and in case that isn't the problem, how does one go seeing what is happening during the time from when one log's in and the desktop is displayed? Is there some kind of log that shows the date/time that can be enabled or is there a debug mode that can be enabled somehow via special keys or maybe from grub?
I have several file servers in our offices and I am relatively new to Ubuntu / Linux. I get notices that there are updates for the server software from time to time. Is it typical to update everything when available or should I follow "If it ain't broke, don't fix it..." mentality?I would hate for everything to be working fine and then have an update throw me a curve.

But the last about 6 weeks the system time only in Ubuntu is going slow. About -8 per 24 hours! I can only guess because I have more things running in my Windows 7 and Ubuntu.
I can set it right by coping the hareware time to system time with this command:

For like windows you can resore your os to a state of peace kind of. If you messed up your vital files you could go back in time and restore you computer to a selected time. I was wondering if you could do that for ubuntu
View 4 Replies View RelatedEver since I installed Ubuntu Natty, from time to time, for no particular reason, the entire computer screen freezes, and I am forced to hold the power button on my laptop to restart things with a hard reset. I cannot explain why it happens.
Such an issue never occurred in any of the past installations and versions of Ubuntu. This is a fresh installation of Natty by the way.
Also, I can currently be running a lot or nothing and it does this. Thus, it does not matter what I am actually doing (ie, what programs I might be running).
It has occurred about 10 times since I freshly installed Natty 6 days ago.

I started out with Kubuntu RC, then installed ubuntu-desktop and updated all the way to the current state of packages.Anyway, from the moment I installed the RC, from time to time the boot splash appears, the dots light up/turn off and then the booting hags. No key seems to work.I the do a hard reset and everything works just fine.As not to open another thread:- how can I see the Ubuntu splash screen? (currently I can see the Kubuntu one)- how can I turn the splash off and have it boot in text mode?

I don't know if I'm posting in the right box - I'm new to both Ubuntu and this forum so please bear with me. Thing is, I spent almost 2 days trying to find a web server that meets my likes. I tried like almost every well known web server, be it Apache, Lighttpd, Nginx, and Cherokee, one by one. For each I was successfully in getting PHP up and running, but was never able to configure the virtual hosts.
I'm 99.99% sure that I - for multiple times - followed correctly the online how-to's. Especially Cherokee, I did exactly the screencast (which is just 2 steps, as Cherokee has a GUI for virtual server setups). Strange enough, with each web server the virtual hosts thing never worked for me. I always received "Server not found" error. I tried with Firefox and Google Chrome. Currently I'm on an Ubuntu 9.10 (32bit) box - I reinstalled this one over the 64bit, to vain.
Don't know if it's a problem with my DNS, but I have another machine running Windows 7 with the same DHCP settings (means same DNS and IP range). Virtual hosts work fine there on an XAMPP installation.
I am trying to add subdomains on ubuntu 9.10 desktop edition and and I am not sure whether I need to add some info.(such as 127.0.0.1 sub1.example.com and so on) to the /etc/hosts file like the windows' windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts file. I used to use the wamp-server(on Windows 7), I needed to edit 3 files, httpd.conf, httpd-vhosts.conf and hosts. And almost every edit is made in the httpd-vhosts.conf file on wamp-serveriles should be edited? or what else should be done that I didn't mention?
