Ubuntu :: Best Way To Set Up Media Server Over WAN

May 25, 2010

I've recently come into the possession of a nice little pentium 4 box and I have a 1TB drive to go with it. I'm looking to make a media server out of it.

Setting up a server over my LAN was really simple to do with Firefly and Ubuntu's built in vino (remote desktop server). BUT I've run into the problem of not being able to serve my media outside of the LAN.

Now I realize that I could configure Remote Desktop in Ubuntu (10.04) to also allow connections from outside the LAN, but isn't there a better way of doing this? You know, streaming media WITHOUT using VNC?

Ubuntu :: Server 10.04 And Samba Server Admin - Share Media Files Between Computers

May 25, 2010

I have a LAN of about 70 computers that I would like to share media files between. I have gotten to the point with Samba that I can view the files without a username/password from client PC's. I would like to make all the folders read only except for one which will be writable for everyone. The thing that I am having a hard time with is allowing a couple of administrators (on Windows 7 machines) read/write access for all files/folders. I am completely new to Ubuntu and Samba so please make explanations thorough. Here is /etc/samba/smb.conf file:

Ubuntu :: Change The Mounting Point Of A Usb External Drive From '/media/disk' To '/media/Movies'

I was trying to change the mounting point of a usb external drive from '/media/disk' to '/media/Movies'

Here is were the stupid part takes over... I right clicked on the desktop icon for the device and selected Properties. From there I selected the Volume tab and in there I changed the mounting point to '/media/Movies' It accepted it and said the changed would take place when I unmounted it and remounted it. However, when I did this it now says it cannot be mounted as it says mount_point contains invalid characters usually /

Unfortunately, now I cannot get back into the properties to remove my error.

General :: Create A Media Server Using Ubuntu?

Apr 28, 2010

I'm an intermediate Linux user and a relative beginner to servers. I would like some help finding resources on setting up a basic server. I have Googled, and am a member of the Ubuntu Forums, but just figure it can't hurt to ask the Stack Overflow community for help as well. I plan on installing on an old laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad R61i or Toshiba Satellite A105). I have downloaded the latest Ubuntu (9.10) but don't know how to do any of the configurations.

I just want a server to store my files where I can access (download and/ or stream) from a browser.

Ubuntu :: PS3 Media Server Tray Icon Looks Odd?

I have done a fair bit of Googling first but with no success...I am using PS3Media server to stream audio, video etc to my PlayStation. It works very well indeed on the PS3 end, but I have a slight annoyance that is messing with the nice look and feel of my Ubuntu desktop: The PS3 Media Server icon seems to have a grey background, whereas my panels all have dark transparency, this makes it stand out a mile.Is there any way of altering this icon? I was looking in the ..../pms-linux-1.10.5 folder but couldn't find much there.

Ubuntu :: Media Server Hosting Through VMware?

Aug 9, 2010

I put this in the General Help section since this potentially deals with multiple things. Without further ado...On my Desktop, My host OS is Windows 7 while thru VMware i have Ubuntu as a Guest OS. I know it's easier to just use Ubuntu solely on the Desktop to host it as a media server, but for certain reasons (family and friends mostly) I'm using VMware instead. My goal is to use my Ubuntu OS thru VMware for others in my household to access it. So far, my Windows host can pick it up the media it's sharing, but not the rest of the network. I know it has to do with the NAT that VMware uses, but what's the best way to configure it to where other laptops, and ps3's on the network can see it?

Ubuntu Servers :: Getting Alternative To WHS/media Server

Jan 3, 2011

I currently have a server running Windows Home Server and was wanting to know if Ubuntu Server could do the following requirements I currently enjoy

1. Media Streaming, to multiple devices simultaniously i.e. pc/xbob360/PS3 all at the same time. Possibly re-encoding OTF.

2. Remote Access, not just to the server but linking(so i can rdp to my main rig through the server from any internet location) to other systems on the "Home" Network both Linux and Windows.

3. Drive Pooling with redundancy, I want to be able to add and remove HDD and just have it expand the pool so current folders can just grow, but also have it duplicate or make redundant copies so if a HDD fails it can still be recovered.

4. Backup of machines on the network, either manual or scheduled, of both Linux and Windows machines

5. App sharing would be a plus but not required, so I could run a Linux app from the server seamlessly on my windows pc.

6. Basic file storage and browsable structure from windows machines.

I realise this may be a tall order and I don't expect it to be easy or straight forward in any way, but I really hate WHS, it has the slowest file access speed of any os i have ever seen, and is so buggy its unbelievable.

What I would like to do with this is set it up so that I can log into this machine through my laptop or other computer on the network and watch the movies off my hard drive. Basically have a headless server that 5 to 6 computers can access and it not slow down of mess up the audio track on the movie. Is there any software I need or is this a big project that requires a whole bunch of settings?

Ubuntu Servers :: 8.04 Server: Media Playback Is Interrupted

May 12, 2010

I use a headless 8.04 server for media storage. The system is a P4, 2Gb RAM, gigabit network. Some cpu/IO heavy processes are scheduled to run at night, typically the server is at about 3-6% CPU load, but memory is pretty fully used:

Tasks: 95 total, 1 running, 94 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie
Cpu(s): 0.0%us, 0.0%sy, 0.0%ni,100.0%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st
Mem: 2075584k total, 1944612k used, 130972k free, 30472k buffers
Swap: 0k total, 0k used, 0k free, 1364788k cached

When playing back media (DVD, MP3) from the server, I find that playback gets interrupted every 10-15 minuted for about 5 seconds, and then resumes.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Internet Streaming Media Server For Debian PPC?

Mar 17, 2010

I've tried on a couple of mailing lists to get a decent response, but it's been pretty shabby, so I thought I'd try the expertise of this fine community.I have a, relatively, ancient iMac G4 "Flowerpot" running Debian Testing and XFCE that I was using as a home music server. I write "was" because I could simply mount it using SSHFS from work, but now they have decided to become very restrictive with ports and for the life of me I can't get it working. I've already set-up GNUMP3D on it, but that also uses a port work won't allow.

So, in essence, I'm looking for suggestions on a Web-based application I could use to stream my music from home. Flash does not work on PPC, so anything Adobe-related is out of the question. Also, Java seems "iffy" at best... It's also worth note all of my music is in OGG format, so the program would have to be able to play said format.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: PS3 Media Server Does Not Start Java Conflict?

Apr 4, 2010

I have been using this program for about 2 months now, but all of a sudden yesterday, it doesn't not show up on PS3. I check on my computer and it is frozen. I close it and try to restart. From then on, it never comes back. It seems like it wants to (the tray icon wants to appear but quickly disappears). I check on System Monitor and Java is running (when you hover over it it lists the program) but in the Waiting Channel it is the only program that says futex_wait_queue_me. It is also the 2nd highest memory user (49 MiB). I have done a lot of different things. Tried getting the latest beta release (which did make it pop up but would never start), I installed the new debian package (when it installed it said pms was already running), uninstalling and reinstalling JDK 6. Nothing works. I don't know what in the world would cause it to do this. It was like fine one minute, dead the next. I've tried other servers (Mediatomb won't let me access some of my drives and PS3 doesn't see it, I MythTV's front and backend stuff is way confusing).

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Ffmpeg Crashes Upnp Media Server?

Apr 19, 2010

i run ubuntu 9.10. i have updated all installed packages. i run a 32bit 3.6 ghz intel p4 dual core with three monitors running on two video cards. all this works correctly. i am able to play video in video player and audacious2 on any monitor.

i'm trying to run a upnp media server for my house. myself and both my tenants have playstation 3s, and i would like to host music, music videos, original content, and the backup copies of legally purchased dvds over the network. i recently converted from windows xp, and all of my media files were created by vlc on windows xp, ripped with winamp, edited and rendered with sony vegas, or downloaded from videos. i have tried both mediatomb (from the repository) and fuppes (from subversion) and had the same result with both.

basically, whenever the media center tries to populate the database and search the files, ffmpeg returns an error that crashes the media center. i do not know enough to implement better error handling in the source. both media servers, when running in the terminal, eventually return the same error message when scanning my sepearate hard drive for media. (~100gb of mp3, avi, mpeg, and mp4 files)

error code: /build/buildd/ffmpeg-0.5+svn20090706/libavformat/mov.c:1456: mov_read_trak: assertion `st->duration % sc->time_rate == 0' failed.

the process then ends.the weird thing is that this does not happen when i disable mp4 files in mediatomb (although i have not figured out how to replicate this feature in fuppes) so i have reason to believe that something in the metadata for mp4 files is throwing ffmpeg off. even if the metadata is bad in the mp4 file, it shouldn't cause a crash.

i tried to compile mediatomb without ffmpeg support, but the ./configure script returned errors whenever i tried to append an option to the configure command. i then reinstalled all the ffmpeg packages in the symantec package manager and still no luck.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Setup 10.4 Server As An UPnP Media Renderer?

Jul 27, 2010

I have been trying to find something that does this for some time now and discussions on IRC didn't turn up anything usefull - thats why this post for a prolonged discussion I have Ubuntu Server 10.4 installed (no X) and am trying to use it as an upnp media renderer. I would like to be able to playback their music on the servers soundcard from various devices. Thus it would be nice to have the ubuntu server expose an upnp media-renderer which one can use as an output device.

Is there a suggestion on which software to use? What I already have working is an upnp media-server (mediatomb) with ampache, but this isn't really what I'd like since I don't have as much disk-space on the server as I have on the various computers.

Ubuntu Servers :: Getting Config Recommendations For New File/media Server?

May 27, 2011

I'm building a new file/media server for my household to use, and would like to hear the experiences of others, and suggestions, or links to appropriate howto's. I'll be using two (2) 250 GB Western Digital RE4 drives mirrored via mdadm RAID 1 for the Operating System. The storage area will be handled by four (4) 500 GB Western Digital RE4 drives in a RAID 5 array, managed by an Areca 1210 controller.

What I'd like to configure is a basic Samba file server, on which we have individual user folders, and a shared drive. As well, I'd like to add the ability to manage our movie collection so it can be accessed by the Boxee Box attached to the television. Twonky looks promising (and I don't mind paying the $19.95 for something that works well). However, as this is new to me, there may be other solutions out there that are better, and easier to administer. Moving forward, I'd like to explore the feasibility of configuring LDAP on this machine to authenticate users on the network (perhaps even integrate the mail server somehow), and the remote users (only two) who VPN into the network using the pfSense firewall appliance. There are no Windows servers, so Active Directory is not a factor.
