Ubuntu :: Changing Brightness / Plugging In USB Device - No Notification

Jun 18, 2010

Changing the brightness and keyboard brightness does not give a notification, though the brightness changes. In addition, ejecting a cd, plugging in a usb device, and seeking/playing music gives no notification (though Rhythmbox tells me what track I've skipped to/played). Again, the cd does eject, the usb device can be accessed, etc. I'm not sure if this last one is a problem, but every notification except for the volume one appears about 80 pixels down from the top panel. This 80 pixels below the panel is only ever occupied by the volume notification. Ubuntu 10.04, gnome-power-manager 2.30.0 ubuntu1, notify-osd 0.9.29-0ubuntu2. I'm using a Dell Studio 1555 notebook.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Banshee Doesn't Seem To Pick Up Device

May 10, 2011

I just got a Motorola Atrix yesterday. Figured I could just use Banshee to manage the device in Ubuntu like I did with my prior IPhone. However, banshee doesn't seem to pick up the device. However, they dont' tell you what file to add it to. I did add those lines to /home/michael/.config/banshee-1/addin-db-001/config.xml which was the only xml file I could find for banshee. However, still doesn't work.

Does anyone have any experience getting the Atrix to work in banshee. Or does anyone know of another manager I would be able to use to manage music and video on Ubuntu. The only official way to do this is to use Windows Media Player or the motorola app both of which are Windows/Mac.

Ubuntu :: Syncing IPhone With Banshee Transfers But Unseen On Device

May 2, 2011

I recently installed ubuntu and noticed somewhere that it says "Now you can say ubuntu has iDevice support out of the box". Naturally i tried, resulting in a music library with all the album artwork mixed up. I've tried to sync a couple of times, even added the repository for libimobiledevice and searched for the newest version (said it was already installed). When trying to sync with banshee (or rythmbox), it says syncing on my screen and on my iphone's screen. After syncing, my iphone updates the library, no new music is discovered. I can also add that banshee discovers 100 extra songs on my iphone.

When I right-click on the drive, I still see F-spot on the list. If I select 'Open with other application', I can't change it from F-spot.

Ubuntu :: Plugging Devices Into USB Turns Computer Off

Nov 14, 2010

I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 32 bit on my desktop and I've encountered a curious and somewhat frustrating issue. It appears that when I plug a flash drive, external hard drive or MP3 player into a USB port my computer turns off. Sometimes it happens instantly, other times it occurs a minute or two later when I'm transferring files. I'm not sure how to approach this issue. I've searched the forum and haven't found any mention of this. I am working on said desktop and all other hardware seems in good working order. If it helps, This is a 3 year old desktop with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600 cpu, a ABIT NF-M2S AM2 NVIDIA GeForce 6100 motherboard, an EVGA GeForce 7600GT video card and a SATA harddrive. I can post a log if someone wants, not sure which one to post though.

(or something similar) and it reverts "None" againWhen I unplug the external screen and try to re-enable Compiz it runs fine like it should, I've read elsewhere to run "compiz --replace" but it does nothingI thought something like:Plugging in an external screen requires Ubuntu to use a different display driver which doesn't support Compiz

OpenSUSE Install :: Plugging Up Windows Disk Overwrites MBR?

Jun 6, 2010

I had an old Windows disk I wanted to see if I could get some files off of. I was a Windows XP installation, but it got a virus of some sort and eventually died completely. I had always wanted to try to get my files off of it so I could wipe it and use it as another drive. Well, I plugged it up in my computer and thought that it would just recognize it as a regular data disk, but instead somehow it got automatically set as the boot drive. The computer went from the BIOS splash screen to blank and back a couple times before booting Windows. I then tried resetting the other drive as the boot drive and also unplugging the Windows disk with the same result: an MBR error screen.

I fixed the issue by reinstalling the MBR with the repair tools in the openSUSE disk but I am really curious if anyone knows why this happened. Is it a Windows issue or a motherboard issue or perhaps something else?. My old computer was about 7 years old but this new one is well, brand new. So I haven't had much experience with newer motherboards but I know they have come out with a lot of new features so for all I know they may have something that can detect a Windows install and rewrite the MBR or something. I also wouldn't put it past MS to influence($) MB makers to include such a feature.

The one problem I have now is that the boot options no longer display the kernel version, and the splash screen with the progress bar no longer shows, just the standard text.

Debian Multimedia :: Keep Laptop Screen Lit When Plugging In HDMI Monitor

May 7, 2015

Where the script is for Gnome 3. When I plug the HDMI cable, the desktop expands to include both, but disables the backlight on the laptop monitor. I have to restart gdm3 or the laptop for the brightness control to bring it back up. First, why would it turn brightness to 0, and how do I change the default of that so it stops. I plug and unplug the HDMI regualarly while I wait for a new desktop and the laptop has to pull double duty.

I just switched from Ubuntu 14.10. It never blacked out a screen on plug in or removing. That means that there must be some way to do it, however, it used Unity and this is Gnome 3.

I installed KDE. It works as well. I will use it for now, but would like to get Gnome 3 to work. My default is gdm but I think I saw I can switch it to kdm.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Driver Became De-activated After Plugging In Ethernet Cable For File Sharing

Dec 10, 2010

Using ubuntu 10.10 (pinguy OS) i connected an ethernet cable from my girl's macbook pro to her lenovo ideapad s10-3t to transfer some DS9 episodes onto it. new enough to linux to have not been able to figure out how to access the files on the mac, so i disconnected the ethernet, and the wireless hasn't worked since. tried everything i know, and googling for a while (as well as searching again on this forum) to no avail.

Just before linking the 2 computers via ethernet, the wireless worked fine on the ideapad, always had; but not so after the ethernet connection that did nothing other than apparently kill the wireless. an "lshw -C network" command tells me i have a BCM4313 wireless card, and *-network UNCLAIMED. also, if i launch "install additional drivers", i see that the proprietary driver is not active.

How could merely plugging in an ethernet cable that happened to be conncected to a MBP running OSX.6 do that? and will that happen again? i thought linux was supposed to play real nice with other OS's, so why did a simple file transfer kill my wireless connectivity? i have no access to internet via ethernet cable, so i cannot just download the driver i need now. shouldn't it still be in the computer still? somewhere? is there a simple solution to this, or has the wireless driver been wiped out by plugging in the ethernet? is this a bug that should be reported?
