View 1 RepliesI'm travelling right now so am not connecting into my normal router. When using Ubuntu it connects to the Wifi and then after about 15 secs drops me out again. I I boot to Windows XP this doesnt happen.

I'm having a really strange problem with my wifi connection on my laptop. The ethernet connection works fine and so does the wifi connection - as long as I sit within one meters range from my router! As soon as I take the laptop further away the connection drops. The router is still being found by network-manager and the signal is just below 100%, but when I try to establish a connection it fails.
I'm sitting here on a fresh Ubuntu 10.04 install, and I had exactly the same problem with 9.10. That time I went through a lot of different procedures, and in some strange way the problem was solved. I haven't been that lucky this time though, I've tried reinstalling network-manager, using ndiswrapper, installing the wireless backports package, tried all kinds of drivers.. nothing works.
There shouldn't be any problem with the connection itself; I've had a perfect connection downstairs but now I can't even connect if I stand two metres from the router! Has anyone experienced anything like this and managed to fix it? My wireless card is Atheros AR2413. This is an example from daemon.log

I have a dual booth system (ubuntu (64 bit) and windows 7 (also 64))... In both systems I have trouble with my wifi:Sometimes it works for a few hours without trouble and then I stops working every 10/15 seconds after reconnecting. In windows it keeps on reconnecting, but in ubuntu sometimes also the wifi logo/picture disappears from my panel, so I can't start wifi again or see it's status.

View 14 Replies View RelatedPinging out from my netbook (over wifi, to any host) gets ~0% packet loss. Pinging into it (from any host) gets about 50% packet loss.
The router is a Dlink-DIR615 (rev d, running DD-WRT v24-sp2) but all other hosts on it ping eachother fine. I've tried changing routing, disabling IPv6, using older kernels and using wicd, all with no luck. The wireless connections is at 100% most of the time. This could be a new problem with Maverick, but I may not have noticed it before. I believe this is causing web browsing to be really slow and causing SSH timeouts.
I haven't tried madwifi drivers or nsidwrapper yet.
Edit: just booted into Windows and it has the same problem. Could it be a hardware issue? Also tried with a static IP, with no change.
Strangely, a normal ping gets 50% packet loss, but ping -A gets < 1% loss.
Edit 2: no packet loss at all on eth0.

after maybe half an hour, the wireless download rate drops to about 110ks (and runs happily at up to 20x this until then). At that point, it will never pick back up above that rate unless i disconnect and reconnect. Once the problem occurs once, its like to reoccur about every 5 to 10 minutes until the machine has rebooted.

The problem is, I can't set it back to nautilus. I've looked everywhere, including right clicking on the drive in 'Computer', but the default application in the 'properties' window is set to 'open folder'. When I right-click on the drive, I still see F-spot on the list. If I select 'Open with other application', I can't change it from F-spot.

I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 32 bit on my desktop and I've encountered a curious and somewhat frustrating issue. It appears that when I plug a flash drive, external hard drive or MP3 player into a USB port my computer turns off. Sometimes it happens instantly, other times it occurs a minute or two later when I'm transferring files. I'm not sure how to approach this issue. I've searched the forum and haven't found any mention of this. I am working on said desktop and all other hardware seems in good working order. If it helps, This is a 3 year old desktop with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600 cpu, a ABIT NF-M2S AM2 NVIDIA GeForce 6100 motherboard, an EVGA GeForce 7600GT video card and a SATA harddrive. I can post a log if someone wants, not sure which one to post though.

Changing the brightness and keyboard brightness does not give a notification, though the brightness changes. In addition, ejecting a cd, plugging in a usb device, and seeking/playing music gives no notification (though Rhythmbox tells me what track I've skipped to/played). Again, the cd does eject, the usb device can be accessed, etc. I'm not sure if this last one is a problem, but every notification except for the volume one appears about 80 pixels down from the top panel. This 80 pixels below the panel is only ever occupied by the volume notification. Ubuntu 10.04, gnome-power-manager 2.30.0 ubuntu1, notify-osd 0.9.29-0ubuntu2. I'm using a Dell Studio 1555 notebook.

buntu user but this time I'm planning to remain so I would like to solve this little problem, which is the following:I have a MSI Wind U100 running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS... everything works fine, both Compiz and Emerald, but when I plug in an external screen (Samsung SyncMaster 2232BW) Compiz simply gets disabled, if I try to re-enable it a pop-up shows up saying "Searching for video driver..." (or something similar) and it reverts "None" againWhen I unplug the external screen and try to re-enable Compiz it runs fine like it should, I've read elsewhere to run "compiz --replace" but it does nothingI thought something like:Plugging in an external screen requires Ubuntu to use a different display driver which doesn't support Compiz
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'd like to know if it's possible to automatically mount, and fire up rsync to sync a USB drive with a directory? Specifically, I'd like to copy as much data as the drive can hold and only delete the oldest files if space is needed.
