i am unable to play bbc videos although videos and other videos work fine. i believe i have the latest flash player installed and i installed bbc iplayer from the software center of ubuntu. i am running 64 bit ubuntu 10.10. when i click on a video on bbc i see the photo showing the start of the video but it doesn't progress past that; i just get the hourglass (wheel?) spinning around for a long time.

Recently, I noticed that I can no longer see any video when playing m4v files (audio is OK). These files worked fine until recently, and the problem persists across mplayer, totem, banshee and even firefox.
I am running Natty with the 2.6.39 kernel.
I tried to run Fedora 13 from a live CD on my old HP Pavilion a375c desktop (512MB RAM,3GHZ CPU,160GB Hard drive). The installation CD boots, shows the Fedora hourglass, but hangs when the hourglass is filled. I have used the same CD on a Lenovo Thinkpad T61 and a Dell desktop with 512MB memory without any problem. So the problem seems to be on the HP side. I've also tried to boot with CDLinux and Ubuntu live CD on the HP machine. All have the same symptom - hangs at the end of the hourglass during boot. Anything I can do to pass this stage? When i try to play HD (even with 720p) video the CPU load is almost 100%. I'm using vlc player and the movie is barely watchable. If i switch to Movie Player, the CPU load is slightly decreased, but after 2-3 minutes the audio goes out of sync, so no solution there. I have an nvidia 8600gt graphics card and the proper driver installed, every compiz effect works flawlessly without the slightest increase in CPU load and a dual core 2,1 GHz AMD processor. It shouldn't be a hardware issue.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been using Ubuntu 10.04 for about a month and generally the graphics work fine (I have a Radeon 2600 XT graphics card and have installed Catalyst Control Centre 10.7).3D games such as Nexuiz work fine and I can generally play different types of video but when I try to play HD video it gets pretty jerky. The same files play fine in windows so I'm guessing it's a software/driver issue. I've read various related posts to this and after typing 'top' into the terminal, I can see that playing the video takes most of the CPU processing resource up, which I as I understand, suggests that most of the work is not being offloaded to the GPU.

The video DVD successfully burns, and plays in my computer, but does not play in any of the DVD players in the house. I used to user "ConvertXToDVD" when I was on Windows, but am trying to find a free/open source alternative on ubuntu. I am using all default options. I have looked in the settings for both programs, and I fail to see the problem here. Even the ISO created from devede seems to match up to the Video DVD (that works in the players) I had burned with ConvertXToDVD.
In Devede I have it so that the menu is disabled and it automatically plays the first title. Apparently this is not good enough.. I thought this program was supposed to be easy to use? What am I doing wrong here? I am using the same DVD-R I have used before on my Windows machine to great success. I am getting frustrated as I have went through 2 DVDs,
I have a Asus UX30 with an Intel GMA 4500MHD laptop with ubuntu, working with no problems except that when I'm watching some video it often freezes. The screen turns black and the only way to get it some where is to shutdown in the power button. Is there any special reason for computer suddenly freezes

This last time i managed to get it to install but it starts to load and the little Fedora hourglass fills up to the top and then it hard locks the machine. So.. I trashed the install and but ubuntu on.. but i wanted to give it another go, this time downloading the live CD rather then the DVD and see if i have better luck with it. My system is:

I have no logs at this time since, i wiped the original install out, i am just finishing out the download of the live CD and will try again. The qustion is is something i have an ovious issue, like the 2 video cards or something incompatable etc?
This is true for .flv, .avi, .mov, and .mp4, at least. This is true in both vlc and movie player. Thumbnails generated from frames in the videos appear correctly in nautilus. Videos play fine in firefox, on ....., but I downloaded one as an .flv and then it had the same problem. I have restricted extras freshly installed. My "Ubuntu 9.10 - the Karmic Koala" system is fully updated. I've found several other forum posts about the same kind of problem, but I couldn't find anything helpful in them (like that the contrast setting might be WAY out of whack, which it wasn't, or that nvidia drivers needed to be updated or reinstalled, which I don't have anyway, etc).

When I play some video file, like some series (.avi), my system often freezes, the image become static and the sound starts looping. Ctr+Alt+Del does nothing and the only way to shut the computer down and restart the system is by holding the power button down for a long time. However, in the same computer, I use K-Lite Codec Pack in Windows XP and MTS videos are fine!
Is there any way to play MTS videos in Ubuntu very well?

I recently switched to using xfce. Since then, every time i'm watching a video the screensaver turns on after 10 minutes. View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a weird problem, i have an LG LCD screen that i connect to my laptop via HDMI through nVidia. I was watching full length movies and everything worked perfectly. So, i got myself a new, slightly bigger LG LCD, and now, when I play a movie, about 20-60 minutes into the movie, my machine just turns off. doesnt even shutdown properly, just turns itself off, as if the power ran out (which it didnt..)
I thought maybe i had too many things installed, or mabe i should wait for a new version.. so i waited till i reinstalled a fresh 10.4 on a new partition, played a movie, and again, the machine just suddenly turned itself off.
i tried looking in the system log viewer, but between shutdown and startup, i see nothing special (besides ALOT of "rt_ioctl_giwscan. 1(1) BSS returned, data->length = 105")..
i tried running 64bit & 32bit and it has the same error.
I'm using Ubuntu 64bit 10.04 with FireFox and every video I've tried online has worked except the bp.com's oil gusher video streams. Does any one know what plugins to install to make this work?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an ATI 4650 HD and using flgrx via jockey, on 10.10.X becomes unresponsive when I play flash videos inside a browser. The image freezes, and the audio track loops, with a loop length of around 0.5 seconds. The only thing I can is reboot my computer. The xorg log file contains no indication that something went wrong. The last entries in it are the monitor display modes.
I cannot switch to the open source ATI driver, as my monitor screen goes blank after booting.I have tried a fresh system install, but that hasn't worked either.

When google earth installed. i just use google earth only 10 minutes and then again play a song. then vlc looks like this. Screenshot.png and no video playing. no main menu show. I have lots of 720p MKV files which play fine on VLC and/or mplayer. These are the two players I know. Whenever I try to play a 1080p file, the video is sluggish and quickly desynchronizes from the audio (mplayer) or the sound is choppy (vlc). This is because one CPU cannot decode a 1080p x264 video. Not powerful enough. Now, I have a Q6600, with 4 cores. Options in mplayer and VLC to use more than one decoding thread don't seem to do anything at this date, as one core is only user (reported by TOP).
