Ubuntu :: Automounting Remote Drives For Automated Backup

What's the current best practice for automounting a remote drive for automated backup? I want to use Back in Time and maintain snapshots but it can't do that remotely so I have to mount a folder outside of Back in Time. I have used sshfs from this howto in the past and it works mostly but seems to lose connection and not reconnect a lot. [URL]. Is there a more "modern" way? NFS is horribly unreliable and dog slow for me so it's OUT unless it's changed in the last year.

I have a machine on my network and that machine is a mass storage server that I will eventually use as a media server (to stream movies, videoclips and music on my home theater system). I use slackware 13 on ALL of my machines.
I am trying to automate the backup of the "/home" folder of my laptop onto the mass storage server. I currently use rsnapshot and it works great, but I would like to automate the whole process, even if I am not home or in front of my machines...
Here's what I imagined (in pseudo code):
1) Poll if server is active (up);
1.1) If not:
1.1.1) Wake up the server (WOL);
1.1.2) Wait for the server to boot;
1.1.3) Confirm the server has made it to the login prompt (normal boot);
1.1.3.1) If not, send an alarm via email;

Rsnapshot is a software written in Perl to make backup of local and remote file system. The well proven rsync is behind this utility. rsnapshot does not need root user intervention to restore the data of a normal user. It does not take much space in your Backup server. It can be easily automated (scheduled) to make life easier. Just setup once and forget it configuration. Basically it takes snapshot of file system (or a part of) in regular interval such as hourly, daily, weekly and monthly.
This can be configured easily through a simple text based configuration file. The above task can be setup in a few easy steps in a few minutes. Two major tasks are configuring rsnapshot and openssh automatic login. To make the backup automatically, we need to automate the remote login in a secured way. This can be done through openssh tools. This scenario depicts backup of desktop (assuming that IP address is 192.168.0.100) data to a backup server. My desktop runs on Ubuntu 10.04 and backup server runs on Debian Squeeze. [URL]

I can manually mount my iPod shuffle and USB key however they wont auto mount. I cant remember when this stopped but i will admit i did move my install to a new disk. I have researched this for a couple of days and I am not getting anywhere. My Fedora 12 install is working just fine with the standard gnome desktop. I can plug in any usb drive and it is recognized and mounted with a link on the desktop. But I want to use Fluxbox. I installed and am running FB just fine except that I can't get usb devices to be recognized and mounted.I don't need a link on the desktop but an entry in /media would be nice.
I am thoroughly confused about which method I should be using to do this simple task. I created a HAL policy for my trackpad to work. Do I need to do something similar for the usb? I have read about udev rules but they seem to be concerned with NOT mounting usb devices. I also read about autofs and thunar but it seems like there should be a much simpler approach and I have certainly missed it.

Even with ivmount killed, my external devices are auto-mounted (under the names of disk, disk-1, disk-2 etc in /media). This would be fine, however I always have to re-mount the drives as by default they are autmounted as read-only no matter their filesystem. Could I have another daemon automounting my drives, and if so, how do I identify it?
I do not have the gnome-desktop environment installed, but instead run Fluxbox with Rox pinboard and filer. I hated having to manually mount drives from the command line, so I installed a certain package (which I forgotten the name of) which is probably culprit. Now I know how to setup pmount, ivman and rox-pinboard to work together.

yesterday my 9.10 stopped automounting my external USB drive, and in general any pendrive I put into any USB slot. What's worse, it also does not recognise CDs put into my DVD drive. (The only update I recall doing was the official update to the "sudo" package.)
1. The USB issue.I plug in my external hard drive. Seemingly, nothing happens. No new icons appear anywhere.
b) I tried gconf-editor and in apps -> nautilus -> preferences "media_automount" is set to YES.
c) After searching around these forums, I even put "usb_storage" into /etc/modules
2. The DVD drive issue.I put an audio CD in the drive. Usually an 'Audio CD' icon appeared after a few seconds, but now nothing happens. There is a "cdrom0" icon visible in the explorer, but when I click it, I get the following error: Code:Unable to mount cdrom0
So, it seems that for some strange reason my Karmic stopped being able to automount any new media. Does anyone have an idea why it is so and what should I do to bring this much-needed functionality back?

Before I leave with a bad taste in my mouth forever from the linux communities here, I'd like to ask one more question. I've been snooping around a bit about this issue of how to automount USB Drives, have them show on the desktop in file managers like PCManFM and not have to touch fstab at all.
How do I do this? Without touching Fstab, GNOME, any other DE. I only want openbox around.Another question I also hope to answer: How do I make shortcuts in PCManFM?

I've installed Fedora 10 short time after it came out. Now I am having some problems unmounting thes drives on restart or shutdown. It hangs at the stage of 'unmounting file system'. I've looked into this matter and discovered that those drives are automatically mounted and shown on the Gnome file browser. As the /etc/fstab indicates, it is not mounted by it. I must have done something to have all the hard drives shown in the file browser and now Fedora seems to be unable to unmount them.

I notice that in 11.2 that USB drives are not automounted anymore. There is a notification that a device is found, but I have to actually click on the notification and choose to open it with dolphin. If I do nothing, the drive is never mounted. I remember from 10.3 that it would automount the drive and put a icon on the desktop. Is there anyway to duplicate this in 11.2?

When cron runs it creates a .tar like it is suppose to, but it creates archive-.tar. However, when I manually type in that command, I get archive-"whateverthedateis". Is there a step that I missed since the date keeps being omitted by this cronjob. I tried a another method

This is my first post and I am a linux newbie.. took on the challenge of setting up an ubuntu server with proxy and firewall with vpn access as well.. sounds good? While messing with things, I installed ebox server, know called Zentyal and perform backups, however, when performing a full restore, following instructions and all it does not restore correctly. I ran many attempts with verious configurations and still allways got some errors, such as eboc-ebackup failing to start, etc. most noteably wa sthe ldap error, which i figured out how to fix by restarting once logged into and then rebooting.
I say the Clonezilla options for a full backup, and it sounds great, but does require me to perform a full abckup, while bring the server down to perform. What I wanted to know, was what do you recommend for performing a full backup (possibly to NTFS partition or USB key with FAT32) with automation or even if i had to perform the trigger, just without needing to bring the server down, so when i go into production i dont have any issues backing up anytime?

I am looking for an automated backup system and I like bacula. I have 3 Notebooks and a Desktop computer that need regular backup. Now I don't want to let them run all night just to do the backuping, so I was thinking I could use wake-on-lan to have bacula wake up the machines, then do the backups, and shut them down afterswards. While this may work with devices on the ethernet, it won't work with the Notebooks on the wifi. So is it possible to have the Notebooks schedules to automatically wake up from suspend or shutdown ? Or is it possible to interject a shutdown command if it is after a cerain hour and call the bacula director to start the backup now?

I'm breaking into the OS drive side with RAID-1 now. I have my server set up with a pair of 80 GB drives, mirrored (RAID-1) and have been testing the fail-over and rebuild process. Works great physically failing out either drive. Great! My next quest is setting up a backup procedure for the OS drives, and I want to know how others are doing this.
Here's what I was thinking, and I'd love some feedback: Fail one of the disks out of the RAID-1, then image it to a file, saved on an external disk, using the dd command (if memory serves, it would be something like "sudo dd if=/dev/sda of=backupfilename.img") Then, re-add the failed disk back into the array. In the event I needed to roll back to one of those snapshots, I would just use the "dd" command to dump the image back on to an appropriate hard disk, boot to it, and rebuild the RAID-1 from that.
Does that sound like a good practice, or is there a better way? A couple notes: I do not have the luxury of a stack of extra disks, so I cannot just do the standard mirror breaks and keep the disks on-hand, and using something like a tape drive is also not an option.

I'm looking for a way to set up a backup with two 2TB hard drives. What I want to do is basically mirror two drives. What ever I copy to the one drive I want it to be "cloned" with the other drive.
Is there any software that could help me with this? Does anyone know of a better to do something like this?

I currently have an Ubuntu 10.04 Server with 10 2TB hard drives (Hot Swappable). I discovered that having a software raid over 16TB is not supported, so I split the drives into 2 sections and have 2 Software Raid arrays storing my movies, audio, pictures, and other software. The total current usage is around 7TB.
Since backing the files up to DVDs or even BlueRay is laughable, I am going to backup the system to 2TB hard drives probably 4 of them, the problem becomes that I can only hook one backup drive at a time into the system using a hot swap tray. Now I know that I can do this manually by copying the files one at a time to the drive until it is full, switching the drive out and repeating this, but I am hoping for an automated solution, Start backup, plug first drive in, system fills up drive, swap and repeat. Also it would be nice if the system remembered what had already been backed up so when I add files to the system, I only need to attach the last drive and not start the process over.

Because a lot of users are using laptops now, and many want externals hard drives for backups, is there a program in Ubuntu (cross-platform with Windows would be nice) that backs up files to an external hard drive when the external drive is plugged in or on a timely basis? All backup systems seem to have a timed system, but these systems have annoying pop ups if your backup location is non-existant (e.g. Deja Dup).
Use case 1: I plug in my external, the program recognizes that and starts a backup.
Use case 2: I leave my external in all day and every 6 hours, my laptop backs up my files to it.

I am using software RAID in Ubuntu Server Edition 9.10 to mirror(RAID1) two 1TB harddrives. These are used for data storage and websites.I also have a 80GB harddrive for the operatigsystem. This drive has no backup or RAID at all. Should this drive crash and the system therefore to become no longer bootable, will I be able to recover the data the 1TB drives or should I backup the 80GB drive as well?

I already have an ubuntu backup server in my location and need this one server to be backed up remotely in another state. this other location is a helpdesk so there's a danger that they can gain access to confidential data. I'll be setting up this new server as an ftp server but need to set the ftp folder to only allow access to the backup server and me. Because its remote on the helpdesk side, they'll need some access to the file system but need to be completely blocked off from the ftp folder where all the data is at. How can I make sure I can keep them away from my data and still be able to retrieve or copy files over without permission issues between both servers?

I have 2 servers. One is an operational CentOS + cPanel server and the other is a blank CentOS server. I want to use cPanel's backup suite to backup our customers accounts but I want to do it so the blank server is mounted to the cPanel server, rather than an FTP backup. If that makes sense. I believe from previous experience that NFS is the way to go but I'm not sure.

This is not a regular backup. I only want to backup selective directories so personal files (photographs, documents, sourcecode) will be kept safe in case of a total system meltdown. This'll be 15GB max. Basically the digital variant of a fire resistant safe. I looked into duplicity but that requires me to install gpg keys on the target machine, which I can not do. I rather have a solution that just relies on just a working shell account and diskspace on the target server.
I thought of writing a simple script to do the following:
1. Mount remote server with sshfs
2. Mount encrypted container at remote server (LUKS, TrueCrypt?)
3. Loop over predefined directories on local machine and copy to encrypted container (rdiff-backup?)
Based on these requirements:
- Target server is "dumb": only ssh access + diskspace (i.e. no installing of gpg keys)
- Encrypted container should grow/shrink to fit contents
- Encrypted container should be easily decryptable on any OS if you have the password
- Once data leaves client server it should be encrypted: sysadmin on target server should never be able to see unencrypted data.

I'm trying to setup rsync to backup a remote directory to my local drive.
I cd to the directory that I want to pull the files to, then I enter:
rsync -vrtW account@remote.com:~/public_html
I enter the password then it starts running. I get all the files listed, but none of them actually transfer. What am I missing?

Question for you all. I am trying to get my system so that when I insert USB drives they don't auto mount, and when I click on them in the filemanger they only mount read only. I am halfway there, as when I have used "gconftool-2 --set /apps/nautilus/preferences/media_automount --type bool false" to prevent the automounting. So thats working great.However it looks like for the mounting of drives in read only mode it used to be (around 2008 or so) that this command would work "gconftool-2 --type list --list-type=string --set /system/storage/default_options/vfat/mount_options "[ro]"" However, it appears that at some point that was removed and no longer works.
Any idea on how I can get this to work? I just want to be able to click on the non-mounted USB device and when nautilus mounts it have it get mounted "ro" not "rw". Ideas?
