When cron runs it creates a .tar like it is suppose to, but it creates archive-.tar. However, when I manually type in that command, I get archive-"whateverthedateis". Is there a step that I missed since the date keeps being omitted by this cronjob. I tried a another method

What's the current best practice for automounting a remote drive for automated backup? I want to use Back in Time and maintain snapshots but it can't do that remotely so I have to mount a folder outside of Back in Time. I have used sshfs from this howto in the past and it works mostly but seems to lose connection and not reconnect a lot. [URL]. Is there a more "modern" way? NFS is horribly unreliable and dog slow for me so it's OUT unless it's changed in the last year.

While messing with things, I installed ebox server, know called Zentyal and perform backups, however, when performing a full restore, following instructions and all it does not restore correctly. I ran many attempts with verious configurations and still allways got some errors, such as eboc-ebackup failing to start, etc. most noteably wa sthe ldap error, which i figured out how to fix by restarting once logged into and then rebooting.
I say the Clonezilla options for a full backup, and it sounds great, but does require me to perform a full abckup, while bring the server down to perform. What I wanted to know, was what do you recommend for performing a full backup (possibly to NTFS partition or USB key with FAT32) with automation or even if i had to perform the trigger, just without needing to bring the server down, so when i go into production i dont have any issues backing up anytime?
I am looking for an automated backup system and I like bacula. I have 3 Notebooks and a Desktop computer that need regular backup. Now I don't want to let them run all night just to do the backuping, so I was thinking I could use wake-on-lan to have bacula wake up the machines, then do the backups, and shut them down afterswards. While this may work with devices on the ethernet, it won't work with the Notebooks on the wifi. So is it possible to have the Notebooks schedules to automatically wake up from suspend or shutdown ? Or is it possible to interject a shutdown command if it is after a cerain hour and call the bacula director to start the backup now?

I am trying to automate the backup of the "/home" folder of my laptop onto the mass storage server. I currently use rsnapshot and it works great, but I would like to automate the whole process, even if I am not home or in front of my machines...
Here's what I imagined (in pseudo code):
1) Poll if server is active (up);
1.1) If not:
1.1.1) Wake up the server (WOL);
1.1.2) Wait for the server to boot;
1.1.3) Confirm the server has made it to the login prompt (normal boot);
1.1.3.1) If not, send an alarm via email;

Rsnapshot is a software written in Perl to make backup of local and remote file system. The well proven rsync is behind this utility. rsnapshot does not need root user intervention to restore the data of a normal user. It does not take much space in your Backup server. It can be easily automated (scheduled) to make life easier. Just setup once and forget it configuration. Basically it takes snapshot of file system (or a part of) in regular interval such as hourly, daily, weekly and monthly.
This can be configured easily through a simple text based configuration file. The above task can be setup in a few easy steps in a few minutes. Two major tasks are configuring rsnapshot and openssh automatic login. To make the backup automatically, we need to automate the remote login in a secured way. This can be done through openssh tools. I have a Linux host acting as an ISCSI server for a Windows box. I want to keep an off site backup, so I figure rsync will keep the ISCSI server synced with an offsite Linux host. I understand that Rsync does block level incremental transfer to conserve bandwidth ok, awesome.The trick is, that I also want an archival copy kept. Say I want to go back to a revision of a file from 10 days ago, I need to be able to do that.
I was planning on using Backup Exec, since we currently have a licensed copy. Throw the archives from Backup Exec onto the ISCSI server as well, and have it keep a rotating 30 day backup, or something like that. The issue I see here is that this will be creating a deleting files as it does its daily backup rotation. I'm guessing RSYNC will see these as new files, and likely retransmit everything on a daily basis. The question then becomes, is this assumption correct, or will it still know to do a block level incremental transfer even when file names and such are changing?
I'm trying to create backup/archive my Ubuntu 10.04 system files (so I can restore it in case my system get corrupted). More specifically, I'm trying to zip the important files in my root directory not including my home directory (which includes my documents which I backup separately/more frequently) to an external hard drive attached via USB (called 'My Book').

I do several things, involving a lot of different software (coding, image manipulation, drawing, video editing, etc).And where I live, internet is utterly slow, so instead of actually benefiting of the quick Ubuntu install, I am doomed to spend countless days re-downloading my packages each time.Before my last format, having gained a slightly greater understanding of how Linux works, I saved all the content of apt archives, so synaptic would pick the packages already downloaded from there.But it does not! It re-downloads every package.What should I do to have synaptic recognize packages that are already there?
Note: I am NOT looking to create a mirror repository, aptOnCd and whatnot. I also DO NOT want to install packages by hand, one by one or all together.All these solutions are certainly valuable (and I've tried a good bunch of them), but then I have to update manually my mirrored repository and/or install updates manually. Furthermore, it leaves me with two directories with packages, apt archive and ~/my-repository, which is just messy (in my view at least).

View 3 Replies View RelatedAs root, I use crontab to run mirrordir to backup directories. Everything gets copied over properly, but owner information isn't preserved and root is the owner of all the backed up files. I can deal with that, but crontab reports tons and tons of chown/chgrp errors for mirrordir every time I do back ups--which is every day--and the multiple emails to root of thousands of chown/chgrp errors is very annoying. The error is "Operation not permitted," but that doesn't make sense to me because the job runs as root (right?) and clearly the job is permitted to create the backup files, so why would it fail to chown and chgrp?
I've had the exact same setup on another server for years, and crontab has always run mirrordir without error. Any suggestions how to clear the errors on my new server?
if I run mysqldump from crontab and error occurs, I would like to have email send to me (reporting that backup is not working).

I had a cron job that I needed to run as root. At the time I thought that sticking it in /etc/crontab would be a good idea. However, I used the crontab command to edit /etc/crontab, which I guess is not standard procedure? Specifically, I configured /etc/crontab as my local user's crontab (i.e. sudo crontab /etc/crontab) then added my cron job as I would a local user crontab (i.e. sudo crontab -e).
Originally, my cron job looked like this:
30 * * * * root /my/batch/script &> /dev/null
After adding the new cron job I started seeing errors. Something to the effect of "can't find command root" or something similar. So I removed the 'root' user definition from the cron job and the job started running fine. However, because this is /etc/crontab, there are other system related cron jobs that have been defined to run under the root account (e.g. "17 * * * * root cd / && run-parts --report /etc/cron.hourly" runs as root, etc.). So these pre-existing system cron jobs, which up until now have been running smoothly, are now generating "can't find command root" errors. But I think that the system cron jobs _are_ successfully being run someplace because logrotate seems to be working.
So what I _think_ is happening is that /etc/crontab is being run twice: once as the system crontab, and once as my sudoed local user's crontab. When I run crontab -l I see nothing, but when I run sudo crontab -l I can see the contents of /etc/crontab. I am reluctant to delete my sudoed local user's crontab, because then in the process I would be deleting the system crontab, and I do not know how I should restore the system crontab's contents. (I am still not sure as to the most appropriate way to edit the system crontab).
How can I get out of this mess? I want /etc/crontab to go back to the way it was before--running _once_ as the system crontab. As for my new cron job, I'm willing to reconfigure it anywhere so long as I am still able to run it as root. Any ideas? (I am using Ubuntu 8.04 Server LTE)

View 2 Replies View RelatedIs anyone else having problems with the new 2.6.32-26 kernel and Lucid LTS? I first installed it several days ago on a test system and it immediately killed VirtualBox, since the header files necessary to rebuild the vbox modules were not included in the update. I installed the header files via Synaptic and everything then worked properly, so this morning I allowed my production system to install the updates.
That was a mistake. Immediately upon the required reboot, my GUI failed to appear. Eventually I got a CLI login on TTY1, and attempted to use "startx" to launch the GUI. It failed with a message that the nvidia driver could not be found.
Rebooting and choosing the older kernel version cured all the problems, but for now the security update provided by the new kernel is unavailable to me. This is NOT the reliability I have come to expect from Ubuntu's long term support and update notifications!
I have been running 64 bit Koala on an HP desktop with 8 GB for a few months. Now that Lucid is out and the kernel has stopped changing every three days, I thought I would do a clean install of 64 bit Lucid. Backed everything up, verified the .iso I downloaded a few days ago and burned a CD, and away we go. Everything seems clean, finds the old /home, asks for a restart. I say go.
Suddenly there are way more options on my grub menu. Every Linux option has an alternate with PAE, and the PAE option is the default boot. I didn't even think about it and let it take the default. The reboot hangs. I had to pull the plug to turn the machine off.
I reboot again with PAE. It hangs again. Pull the plug. Reboot without PAE and I'm golden. Google soon turns up all sorts of old advice to add noapic to the boot parameters on a PAE kernel. Instead I sat back and started thinking.
Am I doing with a kernel marked PAE in the first place? This is a 64 bit install. It doesn't need PAE. I look again at the .iso and it's 64 bit.

I'm looking for a file on my computer. It's in .txt format, and was created/last modified on Wed 7 Jul or Thu 8 Jul. It's either in my /home folderr, ot possibly /media/disk. But I can't find it!! The commandCode:sudo find / -name *.txtcreates a huge, unwieldy list that I can't get through.What do I need to do?

However it seems to have created duplicate files in the tar instead of just updating them (refer to screenshot). Is this normal?

I have installed Ubuntu 11.04 for a friend on his new laptop. First I shrunk his Windows partition and then installed Ubuntu 11.04 direct from the Live-CD. Everything worked perfectly and he is very pleased. However I noticed one strange thing. When I ran GParted on the installed Ubuntu Desktop I noted that Ubuntu was installed on an extended partition, /dev/sda4, with the ext4 root file system on /dev/sda7 and three linux swap partitions each of 7.85 GiB. Only one of these swaps partitions is "on", ie with a key next to it. The other two seem to be just wasted space. Why did the install partition three swap spaces?
On a similar theme, on my own machine I installed 11.04 next to my 10.04. This time it installed two additional swap spaces (see problem above). I removed them both and altered the fstab to the UUID of the existing 10.04 swap space and it works perfectly. So my second question is why doesn't the install use existing swap spaces rather than creating new one(s)?
