Ubuntu :: Auto Install Script No Need For Confirmation

Apr 13, 2010

I just reinstalled Ubuntu, but before that I made a list of all the programs that needed to reinstall too. the thing is that it keeps asking me for confirmation before installing every app, and I want it not to... so I can get some sleep while it sets up everything.How do I do this? maybe using the "yes" command, but how?

General :: Apt-get Install Does Not Ask For Confirmation

Jan 30, 2011

In my latest Debian I noticed that apt-get install does not, as I expected, stop to ask for confirmation before starting the actual download/install process.it directly carries on with the operation, which is obviously very annoying when, as I usually do, you first want to see what packages are needed (and how heavy the download) and then you want to decide whether to proceed or not.The man pages, as I correctly remembered, talk about a -y option intended to bypass confirmation requests, which means that the default behaviour should be the opposite.I tried also on a Ubuntu 10.10 with the same result.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Shutdown Confirmation Feature-bug

May 4, 2010

When shutting down 10.04 you are forced to deal with a confirmation window. In previous releases it was possible to switch this off, e.g. right click shutdown button or using gconf-editor. I can't remove this feature bug in 10.04.

Ubuntu :: Why Does 'shut Down' Now Require Confirmation?

May 29, 2010

Since I upgraded to 10.04 Lucid the Shut Down applet puts up a window titled "Shut Down" that has two buttons "Cancel" and "Shut Down". In 9.04 this confirmation window didn't appear. How can I make "Shut Down" skip the confirmation and shut down directly? I've looked around for a preference item about that a couple of times but didn't find it.

Ubuntu :: 10.10 Enable Shutdown Without Confirmation?

Dec 28, 2010

I keep seeing stuff that says "right-click on the shutdown icon, select Properties" and so on.Well, I've just upgraded (should I say "upgraded"? It was a fresh reinstall really, not an Upgrade through the Update Manager) to 10.10, and right-clicking on the shutdown icon does not produce a "Properties" option.I get About, Remove From Panel, and Lock To Panel... none of which are helpful.So, it's been asked before and I'm gonna ask it again: How do I remove the annoying confirmation when I want to shut down Ubuntu?

Server :: DNS Move Looking For Confirmation

Aug 18, 2010

I have a DNS server at an old companies place and that box will be losing it's IP. The whois record for the domain goes to godaddy which has 2 'A' records;
ns.domain.com
ns2.domain.com which point to the current 2 DNS servers. Now if I have a new server up and running and the zones copied over, do I just need to change the 'A' location for ns.domain.com to this new IP? I remember back in the day you had to 'register' the nameserver with the registrar, etc.I haven't touched this stuff in a while, and before I go and change the IP of the nameserver, want to make sure all is in check.

I have a quick question involving crontab and a script I want to run with it. The script generates and sends an email to group members who are on-call for a given day, but when you run it this appears'Run This Script?' The script will run when you enter 'y' or 'yes' and then press enter.

I'm trying to give that input via another script which runs the first one and then waits for the prompt to input a 'y'.How can I make a script which waits for a prompt and then gives it input?

Ubuntu :: Make Shred Command Display Confirmation Before Shredding?

Feb 5, 2011

I use nautilus-action to create a right-click shred command with these parameters.: -f -u -v -z %M

I thought the -v would give me some feedback as well as an "are you sure" dialog before deleting. But when I run Shred it just deletes the file without any feedback and no confirmation beforehand.

How can I get a confirmation prompt to occur before shredding occurs (to prevent me from accidentaly shredding something--sometimes I click the wrong item cause the mouse shifts last second).

Any why don't any icons ever appear on my context menu even though I'm assigning icons?

Slackware :: 13.0 / 13.1 NTPD Differences (Synchronization Confirmation)

Jun 28, 2010

I'd like to get the 13.0 "synchronized to <time server>, stratum <stratum>" messages back on 13.1.

- On 13.0, running ntpd 4.2.4p8, reassuring messages appeared in /var/log/messages like "synchronized to 211.233.84.186, stratum 2".
- On 13.1, running ntpd 4.2.6p1, there are no messages in /var/log/messages to confirm that time is being synchronised.

rc.ntpd on both starts ntpd with the same options. /etc/ntp.conf is identical on both, a "get it working and then make it secure" version:
Code:
cat /etc/ntp.conf | grep -E -v '^$|^#' cat /etc/ntp.conf | grep -E -v '^$|^#'
server in.pool.ntp.org
server asia.pool.ntp.org
server 127.127.1.0
fudge 127.127.1.0 stratum 10
driftfile /etc/ntp/drift

According to Linux Home Networking, synchronization can be checked using ntpq -p. This shows synchronization is working. I would prefer to see that confirmation in /var/log/messages without having to run a command manually to check it. How to get the old messages back?

Ubuntu Networking :: Remote Desktop Server Not Working After 11.04 Upgrade With Confirmation Enabled

May 4, 2011

I just remotely updated my uncle's Ubuntu 10.10 desktop to 11.04. My uncle has no computer skills, so it is very important that I troubleshoot his problems using VNC. After completing the 11.04 upgrade, I was not able to connect to him via VNC. After some fiddling around I was able to connect by turning off the confirmation option in the Security section. We are now using the password security option. The problem is that my uncle does not have any security against my peering eyes.

I tried reinstalling Vinagre, but that didn't help. Is it possible to get the confirmation option working again somehow?

Is there a download link for Vinagre 3.01 (deb)?

The problem is that stdinput has been redirected to file agenda.dat so when I do "read answer" it reads the next line from the file.

Ubuntu Security :: Ecryptfs Doesn't Auto-decrypt With Auto-login

Jan 6, 2011

I recently installed 32bit maverick and wanted to make it login automatically. I tried enabling auto login from Admin > Login but that didnt work and I was still prompted for my password. Then I went to Users & Groups and changed the password option to Do Not ask for password at login now after I reboot, the user list is shown (only 1 user) and it doesnt ask for password after I click on my username.

However, then it gives a few errors (as i vaguely recall):

1. cannot load .ICE directory in my home directory
2. some error 256 about a gconf-sanity-2 file
3. nautilus cannot load my home directory etc

and then it gets stuck without loading anything (blank wallpaper). i ve tried navigating to my home directory using Alt F2, gksudo nautilus and my home dir contents are encrypted by the ecryptfs (there is a readme.txt file and a shortcut). i have tried to decrypt but it doesnt work... i ve also tried to start/stop gdm, and startx but nothing works. if i stop gdm, then the prompt doesnt recognize my password and keeps on rejecting the commands i enter... I think this has something to do with the home dir not being decrypted due to the dont ask for paswd option... how can i disable the dont ask for pwd without the gui (i can access my / by booting through an external usb).

Ubuntu :: Auto Run (auto Exec) A Script On Mounting A Device?

I would like to exec a script whenever a user mount a device. The device could be an internal device (for example a partition on a second hard disk) or a removable one (for example a usb hard disk). The script must have sudo capabilities even if the user is not included in the admin group. Is it possible?

The specific question:
I would like to add acl option to a device whenever it is mounted.
I tried fstab but it's changing the behaviour of nautilus see:

[URL]... so I would like to create a script with the command

Code:
sudo mount -o remount,acl /media/data
and auto execute it any time data is mounted.

Networking :: Ethernet Auto-connect / Auto-sense Doesn't Work

Feb 3, 2011

I have noticed that a common issue to several distros is the fact that the networking subsystem doesn't automatically detect the link if an ethernet connection is disconnected and then re-connected to the NIC after boot. If the ethernet cable is connected after the system is up and running, nothing happens - ethtool eth0 shows link detected: no, and you have to restart the network service to let the NIC know that there is in fact a link, and actually connect. I have a Fedora14 (KDE) box with a brand new Asus motherboard with embedded NIC. Everything works great except the auto-detect of a freshly connected ethernet connection if the link is down to begin with.

Am I missing a ethernet link sentinel utility or something, or is this just the way linux works? I have done plenty of research on plenty of posts, and it seems this is a common problem, with no solution other than manually or programatically restarting the network service in a script to detect the link after a disconnect.

1) I don't how to log in automatically. This and this doesn't work.
2) I need a network tool that can manage multiple connections and has a reconnect feature. With the default network manager I cannot even connect to more than one network simultaneously although I have two network devices of course.

And I guess I can run all that in console mode, right?

Ubuntu :: Selected 'auto Loggin' From The Install CD?

Sep 9, 2010

Just got Ubuntu (latest, greatest) installed. IIRC I selected 'auto loggin' from the install CD, but I'm unsure how this works. I have a user loggin 'ray' and a PW that's all OK. In the GUI, if I want to do something heavy it asks me for a PW which tells me that I'm 'root' at that time.But at the CL prompt I can't log in as root with no PW nor with the PW I use as 'ray'. BTW, is there somewhere I can bitch about the install CD? It was not an unpleasant experience, but I think it could be a bit better.
