I got a mixer today and did everything correctly there and I am trying to put the audio through the microphone input which is fine. But when I try to record through Audacity it's as though the microphone and mixer aren't plugged in. I've played around with the settings in both qJackctl and Audacity only to result worse off than before. Can anybody tell me what I'm doing wrong?

I have an android phone. The voice recorder records files in 3gp audio only format. I can play these on my computer with the standard gnome player and with vlc. However, audacity won't open it up. There is an error that says that FFmpeg should import it but it didn't understand the format. I need to edit some of these audio files for use. Is there a way to convert these files to mp3 or flac so I can edit them? Searches turn up w32 ware and some arcane mencoder commands but they have to do with converting video.

I have found that by connecting the line out to the line in i am able to record, but the quality is rubbish, it will be a lot smoother recording it internally but I cant find a way of doing this, does anyone know how to record that way or know where i'm going wrong?

Right now I just want to edit some audio in Audacity.
I switched back to Linux after a few years, because it usually is "better" than Windows.
I cannot get any sound. I installed ALSA removed and reinstalled PulseAudio and everything else I could find in a forum, to no avail.
Linux tells me my sound card is: 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02)
I used to be able to play MP3s but that went away in the process of all this.
Is there one solution I am missing, or do I have to change everything around depending on what I am doing?
I would like to use Linux for this but deadlines might make me go back to the dark side....
I've installed a tv card but I can't hear the sound through my built-in CMedia soundcard when I watch tv with TVTime. The tv card's audio output is externally connected to my soundcard's line in input. In the 'Input' tab of the 'Sound Preferences' dialog, I can see the input level meter moving.
Audacity can record the tv sound, and I can hear it when I have the 'pass-through' option enabled, or when I play the recording.
I can play media files without a problem, and I can hear the system sounds.
But for some reason I can't get the tv sound to go through to the soundcard's output.
Obviously I've got the audio configured wrong, but I don't know what to do to fix it.
I'm trying to capture audio from a stream, NOT from the mic. This is what I'm doing: Start Audacity, push its record button, play a song. It shows that it is recording but when I play back the results, all background noise, conversation, etc, is in the recording as well as the audio from the song. If the mic is unplugged, I cannot record what I hear coming from the sound card (as in what you hear from the sound card is what you get). I got directions on how to do what I want here ( Looking (maybe) for audio mixer for use with Pulse Audio - Page 2 Posts # 4 and 5) but it's not permanent. I got the instructions in post #11 from that same page to make such a change permanent. I tried using the instructions to make the change permanent (I backed up my default.pa just in case something went wrong) and these are the changes I had made:

I'm trying to record some audio from 4-track cassette tapes using Audacity and a Sound Blaster mp3+ external usb audio card.I'm using Karmic.I have fiddled with levels on the sound card using alsamixer, but the only I way I can detect any sound from the tapes when recording is by turning the levels all the way up in alsamixer, and in doing this, I can faintly make out the audio beneath a large wall of static. If the levels are not maxed out, I only get static when recording in Audacity.
View 3 Replies View RelatedIm trying to create some screencast videos on Ubuntu. As its a well known fact we dont have a very good screencasting too like Camtasia(only windows) on linux.
After googling extensively I zeroed on Xvidcap for screen capturing and Audacity for audio capture.
According to tutorial [url] first we need to run Xvidcap (do the screen capturing recording first) and then again use Audacity for audio recording .. then mix both video and audio.
I guess this is a pain staking process (running video and audio recording seperately), I thought of running Xvidcap and Audacity simultaneously, if i do this xvicap works perfectly (video capturing happens) but audio capture through audacity does not work.
Note: I even try to run the above tools from seperate terminals/consoles (assuming they are seperate processes)
I even disabled 'audio' in xvidcap and tried to run both at the same time but audacity refuses to work.
I think both the tools are trying to use the same system resources ... and audacity is unable to get hold of the required resources.
Can we run both independently at the same time ?
I am trying to record in Audacity in Ubuntu 8.10 64 bit on a Dell Studio 1535 laptop.The problem is not that its not recording, per se.Rather, the problem is its not recording the way that I want it to.
Its recording from the built-in mic, and I want to use the mic jack instead as a line in from a guitar (well, technically, an acoustic-electric resonator, but its close enough to a guitar to call it a guitar).
I have tried using various devices for recording, and changing settings in both the Volume Control and Sound Preferences, but no matter what I do, Audacity still records from my built-in microphones, instead of from the line-in.

View 1 Replies View RelatedYesterday I ran an update on my Acer Aspire One, which I operate under Fedora11. Amongst the updates was also an update for Qjackctl and the jack audio connection kit. After the update I could not start Qjackctl anymore and all my possibilities with rosegarden and my USB keyboard and fluidsynth were gone. I restored to the system before update ran the update again excluding the two packages concerning jack. Perfect, it works again. So it seems that there is a bug inbedded in the update. By the way, I am quite happy with Qjackctl as the connection tool between my various music making options, which are not very fancy, but I enjoy them. Despite comments in other parts of this forum Qjackctl works very well on the Atom based AAO. I have a kind of protocol of the failure of qjackctl and what I did. I can make that available if necessary

there seems to be a problem that has arisen with my beloved netbook (acer one 10.4")running Ubuntu Netbook. the mouse generally works fine (both menovering and clicking) while using the desktop, but as soon as an application is opened you are unable to click on any of the options within the application (buttons, etc). i have tested this over and over, and what seems to be the problem is that the pointer ignores the application and will always click the desktop.
i have used several diffrent mouses (both usb and trackpad) but the problem remains. i assume this means there it is a software fault. if anyone has ANY suggestions, advice, etc. feel free to post. would like this to be fixed asap!
I created a system backup ISO with remastersys that's about 3.4 GB, and I've repeatedly had failure and about 4 coasters now with both K3b and Brasero trying to burn it. I even ditched the original ISO and made another- same problem.I have always had problems burning discs in both programs, and of all the times I've tried to burn anything with either, I've gotten errors near the end of the data check stage, in verifying the data burned. I'm really tired of this, and I need this ISO perfect to reinstall my OS on a new laptop harddrive.This time it's K3b. It burned successfully, but I get errors in the data verification stage. I was recently assigned to enchance a ftp-server with SSL/TLS support. When I started investigating I found out that the server is a virtual (openvz) ubuntu machine with vsftpd. Enabling ftps was easy enough, I just added the following lines to /etc/vsftpd.conf

When ever I try to sftp or even ssh into my server I get connection refused.
I have the port forwarded in my router.
What am I missing?
Also I have installed Ngnix so what do I need to do for it to work?
I ran an update on ubuntu server today, and after a long install process, it spat out an error, telling me to run "sudo dpkg --configure -a". After I ran that command, I was no longer able to access my website or forum. View 9 Replies View RelatedThe ssh server is running Xubuntu 9.04. It was working before. Then I tried SSHing today and it gave me a connection refused. The computers I've tried SSHing from were running Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.04, MacOS, and Solaris 10. None of them would connect. The ssh server is running the latest version of openssh-server (according to apt-get install). I'm assuming something in /etc/ssh/ got changed but I'm not sure.

Using a Rage Pro AGP 2X with 8 MB RAM (mach64 driver) on a i686 system. The kernel is the latest from squeeze's repo (2.6.32-5) and booted with the same settings as before despite the GRUB change to purge old 2.6 kernels.

There are two Fedora 12 systems which are now refusing to hibernate. The hibernation sequence seems to happen but then things hang indefinitely with a black screen and a blinking cursor, top left. I don't know where to start looking for clues; what do I look for in the logs, could someone please point me to a good hibernate/suspend troubleshooting guide?
One of the systems just recently got out of whack, for no apparent reason; it hibernated great for a couple of years, even as it went through upgrades from Fedora 9. The other stopped hibernating after its F9 -> F10 upgrade. This one lacks non-root hibernation permissions, but when I issue "/usr/sbin/pm-hibernate" as root, it goes through the motions and then hangs at black screen also.
I have an HP tx2500 tablet pc running 9.04, which I was trying to configure the tablet for using the .fdi method on this page. After I redid the .fdi file, I rebooted, and it gave me a flashing screen, similar to the one i got when I tried to install 9.10.
I tried going into recovery mode and using xfix: bad idea. Then, I tried installing envy and reinstalling the drivers from there. That failed as well.
So now, when I try to manually remove the ati packages,(from command line in recovery mode) it doesn't let me, because of some problem with "fglrx-kernel-source" I can't configure, remove, or purge.
I have a Compaq server, as per the title, and I wish to install Ubuntu Server onto it but ran aground when I found it got to trying to run the installer after the CD Boot menu, it just stopped there, waited 180 seconds (as per the error's details) and then locked up with the Caps Lock & Scroll Lock lights on the keyboard flashing.
Now I know it's not the server, as I have installed other OSes onto it in the past, including an older version of Ubuntu server (9.04), I did try and re-install the 9.04 version but the CD I had was too scratched up and got to a point in the installer (copying files) where it just failed cos it couldn't read the disc.
The specs of the thing are:
Dual PentiumIIIs 1.4GHz
512mb RAM (keep meaning to upgrade it)
3x 18.2GB 10k SCSI HDDs (Storage)

My aim was to build a VERY simple smtp proxy under debian to handle mail from a port (51234) and forward it to the standard 25 port. I compile and install a "delegate" witch can handle easily that. It's working very well like that : delegated SERVER="smtp://anotherSmtpServer:25" -P51234
The strange thing is, it's working on my virtual test machine and on the dedicated server in local but I can't manage to use it trought internet. I test it like that. telnet [mySrv] 51234 Of course, no firewal, no deny host, no ined/xined, the service delegated is listening on the right port ... 2 clues : The port is answering trought internet with nmap as "51234/tcp open tcpwrapped" have a look at the tcpdump following :

Having some problems, which seems to be the norm for linux mint 9.
Background: I decided I wanted to try LibreOffice out so followed the instructions here: [URL] to install libreoffice.
After a week I found that LibreOffice doesn't actually have a spell checker or thesaurus even though it says it does. Decided I'd had enough so uninstalled it and auto removed the rest of its gumpf and attempted to install openoffice which actually worked, before. Problem is I can't, linux mint wont let me and keeps outputting random rubbish that makes no sense ie:

I start using Ubuntu, after successfully installed it without any problem.Then I downloaded latest updates, etc. But,after installing a display driver, my computer freezes, refusing to go beyond the welcome screen. I tried several ways but could not solve the problem. So I decided to re-intall Ubuntu, download again the updates, again configure my settings, etc. herefore, I'd like to know whether there is any application to backup or to create a full image of a hard disk so as to avoid the long hours of re-installation.

As it started it went to the Ubuntu logo and then my screen became half full of different colored horizontal lines, so I rebooted and went into the adv boot and ran the install under safe graphics mode. Now when I boot I get options to boot into 2.6.32-25 and also a recovery and also 2.6.32.24 and a recovery. I left the 2.6.32-25 highlighted and it booted but gave me a msg that said:
(EE) VESA: Kernal modesetting driver in use, refusing to load.
(EE) No devices detected.
Then it goes to a screen that allows me to boot in a low graphics mode. It loads and I dl some security updates with the Update Manager. What do I need to do in order to boot w/o any faults and also what is the difference from 2.6.32-25 and 2.6.32-24? Which should I be using? Do I need to modify my graphis somehow?

And everything seemed to work fine and usual however I get stuck on authentication. I'm 100% positive that I've typed in the right password.
My Ubuntu 10.04 does not pick up my mp3 player via the usb port. The usb ports are working fine, picking up my storage device etc but when I plug in the mp3 player nothing happens, except that the device indicates that it is picking up power from the usb port. The device works fine on my other computer (Windows) and I tested it on another machine running on Ubuntu 10.04 where it picks up fine.
