Ubuntu / Apple :: UNR Interface On A PPC Mac?

Apr 5, 2010

I have been searching for this, but can't seem to find a definite answer. I am running Ubuntu 9.10 on my iBook G3. The gnome interface seems to be a little much for it. I am trying to find out if there is anyway to put UNR on an iBook G3 or at least the stripped down interface.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Auto-load Apple Wireless Keyboard?

Apr 22, 2010

This morning I bought an Apple wireless keyboard and I got it connected through Blueman. It works like a charm, but I have on problem;

When I log out I can log back in by typing in my password. However, when I restart the computer it seems that bluetooth is not loaded yet and I cannot enter my password. So I have to log in using my wired keyboard, and then disconnect & re-connect to my wireless keyboard using blueman before I am able to use the wireless keyboard.

Is there any way that I can already auto-load bluetooth and connect to my keyboard before I log in?

Ubuntu / Apple :: Apple Keyboard On VirtualBox Ubuntu Guest OS?

Feb 1, 2010

I had a thread about installing on a Mac and decided to go the VirtualBox route and everything is running splendidly EXCEPT for the fnmode setting in /sys/module/hid_apple.

The problem is that the directory hid_apple does not exist for me to modify the settings for the apple keyboard. I'm assuming that when installing in VB, Ubu assumed it was a PC. Anyone know of a way to get the keyboard config directories in there so I don't have to hit Fn to do Alt-F2? Also, I tried to create the directory (sudo mkdir) and it returned "Cannot create directory...no such file or directory", but not in so many words.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Installing OS Apple Powerbook G4 Ubuntu?

Mar 14, 2011

I've had a Apple Powerbook G4 for a while now, but being mostly a Windows user I've never used it. I remember when it ran it's native OSX (Which I can't for the life remember) Probably Tiger? Anyways... I tried installing Ubuntu on it about a year and a half ago, the installation was botched and I left it sitting there with no purpose in life. :O

So I've decided to dust the laptop and give it another go. I've progressed a little further with my Linux experience, having installed and tested a few distros and even switching over to Ubuntu 9.10 for about 4 months. Enough of my life story and more to the point.Has anyone installed Ubuntu, or any distro for that matter on the Apple Powerbook G4? I know there are different versions of the G4 and I'm not entirely sure what my version is, It's the 1.6Ghz version with The Nvidia card (Err I think) and extra Wireless card installed. I am not very capable with Mac - After checking Apples website I believe it's the 15inch.

I've read the FAQ thread and will begin trying to install Ubuntu tonight at home, I just wanted some suggestion and some pointers in the right direction. What distro would be most suitable for my hardware? and What is easiest to set up?

Ubuntu :: Start The X Graphical Interface Without Using GDM?

Jun 15, 2010

I would like to start the x graphical interface without using GDM. I may be using the wrong terms here for x. Maybe it is called xdm or x11 or something.) I have set GDM to login without asking me for a password (I am the only user of this machine.) Sometimes, it still pops up the GDM login screen and if I select "actions" "reboot" (my memory tells me that is what it was,) it will reboot without asking to login, but the fonts are all wrong. If I select "apps" "restart" and it DOESN'T ask for my login, all is OK.

I would like to uninstall GDM, and place whatever GDM uses to start the graphical interface into the /ect/rc2.d startup scripts. I know GDM does other stuff then just logs me in and starts the graphical user interface, and I think I would like to maintain some of that, but I think I would like to manually insert the startup sequence in the startup scripts. Question one, can someone tell me where to look to find out what GDM is doing now so I can attempt to replicate it?

#2, does someone know the startup script line(s) to start the x server and graphical interface without GDM? I think this has bees asked before, but it seems hard to search older posts.

Ubuntu :: Interface Unresponsive After Update?

After an update (and a restart), everything has become extremely sluggish to respond to my mouse and keyboard. It takes around 6 seconds to change a tab in Firefox, even changing windows will take 2 seconds before the new window will respond to typing (anything I type in the meantime simply doesn't appear).

Here is Synaptic's history from yesterday, I was wondering if any of the version numbers look off to somebody, or if somebody knows which is the offending package:

Ubuntu Servers :: Setting Up 2nd Interface?

Jul 15, 2010

I am having trouble setting up my second network interface on Ubuntu Server 10.04. When setting up the machine it did detect both cards but I only picked one to configure, and now I want to setup the second.

I went into /etc/interfaces and basically copied the settings for eth0 but changed the IP and the name to eth1. I then restarted.

Quite honestly it might be working! But when I run ifconfig -a I see no packets I see

Quote:

eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0e:0c:59:af:c4
inet addr:192.168.4.21 Bcast:192.168.4.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0

[Code].....

isn't that what "UP BROADCAST...." line means?

So perhaps my question is how do I test my 2nd interface? I tried using the 2nd IP with Putty (which is how I usually work on the machine) and couldn't connect.

Ubuntu Servers :: Ssh Restrictions Per Interface ?

Aug 20, 2010

I have a server with two active network interfaces. On one, I need ssh open for all users (it's running LTSP, and as I learned the hard way today, blocking ssh kills LDM access).

On the other interface (which connects to the rest of the network), I only want to allow a few administrative users to connnect.

Is there a way to do this cleanly using sshd_config or PAM? I don't want to do something hacky like running dropbear.
