Ubuntu / Apple :: MacBookPro 6,2 - Only See 2GB Of 4GB RAM?

May 6, 2010

I installed 32-bit 10.04, and only see 2GB of the 4GB available:

Code:
$ free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 2193 1223 969 0 57 817
-/+ buffers/cache: 348 1844
Swap: 4092 25 4066

I was expecting to see 3GB of memory (since I installed 32-bit Ubuntu), which is what I was used to on other systems, but 2GB seems odd. Is there a way to improve things?

Ubuntu / Apple :: GRUB On Dual Boot Macbookpro 5,5?

Nov 16, 2010

Last night I installed ubuntu 10.10 unto a macbook pro 5,5 following the instruction from the MactelSupportTeamAppleIntelInstallation however I made a mistake during the installation process. I forgot to go into advance settings and choose to install the bootloader on /dev/sda3. I'm not exactly sure why this step was needed since everything was working fine anyways, but I was wondering how can I remove the bootloader from /dev/sda and install it on /dev/sda3 without breaking anything. Ubuntu / Apple :: Multi-boot MacbookPro With Various Other Distros And Versions?

Sep 21, 2010

I have a MacbookPro 5,1 with 2GBRAM, which successfully dual-boots with Ubuntu 9.04 since a year. I wish to urgently install ubuntustudio, and also wish to have one or perhaps two more partitions, where I may install the latest Ubuntu as well as another Linux distro.

Typically, think of a multi-boot scenario:
Mac OSX 10.5.x
Ubuntu 9.04 <<--working production install, not to be messed.
UbuntuStudio 10.4
Ubuntu 10.10 [just a few days left!]
Fedora or Knoppix or Debian.

if possible, i'd also like to keep one partition free and unallocated, or reformat a partition, if i ever need to install windows. any thing i'd need to watch out for in this? I've got no extra or free partitions, only free space on the mac partition, that i'd like to carve out and allocate to partitions. Also, before i begin, is there a way I can clone my entire mac+linux hard-disk so in the event of a failure i can get *everything* back, mac as well as ubuntu? I bought a hd of an identical size, but use it with Time Machine. I'd rather use it to clone the entire hd.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Disks Disappear Suddenly While MacBookPro Installation

Mar 2, 2011

Im trying to install Ubuntu on my Intel MacBook Pro 13". When booting from the livecd, Im experiencing strange issues. Sometimes the partiontable and disks/partitions are not readable straight away, sometimes you can read them once (when opening gparted or the install-routine), but then they disappear after it. Sometimes they remain quite a while and "survive" all parted and other tools, and then produce I/O errors during install (after successfull partitioning).

I want to know... are these issues well known or am I the only one with such errors? Im not doing anything wrong, AFAIK. The devices just disappear sooner or later until only loop0 (cd-rom) remains.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Natty Install Changed Partition Scheme (MacbookPro 8,1)?

May 5, 2011

i was experiencing slow start ups since i installed ubuntu 11.04. it took about 20-30sec for the apple logo to come up (or rEFIt). today apple released EFI firmware updates which doesn't seem to install. reason is that the partition scheme is not compatible. EFI Firmware updates only install from GUID partition schemes.
DiskUtility tells me i have MBR. So it seems like Ubuntu changed the Partition Scheme.

Can any body confirm that? how can i make sure ubuntu installs into existing GUID? i will re-partition later today and give you an update if the EFI firmware update installs and boot time is faster.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Xorg "no Screens Found" MacbookPro 3,1 NVidia 8600M GT

Dec 17, 2010

I recently installed ubuntu 10.10 x86_64 on my Macbook Pro 3,1 which has an nVidia 8600M GT video card. The native screen resolution for my system is 1440x900.Ubuntu is installed booting through Grub2 straight from my EFI firmware through rEFIt. I have to disable quiet boot and splash screen but I can boot into a shell. From there I obviously tried startX, but much to my chagrin it did not start. I screwed around with drivers and the like for a bit and ended up reinstalling completely to try and rule things out one by one.

I started by blacklisting nouveau, which didn't load nouveau but also didn't work. I then tried installing the newest nVidia drivers, which also didn't work.Everything I tried gave me the same error, "no screens found".I below is the most resent Xorg.0.log dump with the attempt at running with the nVidia driver.

Code:

[ 3242.793]
X.Org X Server 1.9.0
Release Date: 2010-08-20
[ 3242.829] X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0

I am a computer science student so I am not completely inept, however I just cannot seem to figure out whats wrong with this thing.

Debian :: Macbookpro, Triple Boot And Partioning?

Aug 15, 2010

I have a working system with triple boot (Macos, Debian and Windows Xp).I have total 4 partitions, EFI, Macos, Linux Ext3 and Windows Ntfs. At this point I want to split my Windows partition and turn into the new user "Home" partition. I vaguely remember that there might have been some limitations with number of partitions regarding multiple boot schemes. Does anyone have an idea if there would be any problem if I go ahead and split my Windows partition and end up with 5 total partitions on this laptop?

Debian Installation :: MacbookPro - Unable To Sync GPT And MBR Part Tables

Apr 22, 2011

I'm trying to install Debian 6.0.1a on a MacBookPro5,5 (intel core 2 duo - EFI firmware). I have rEFIt 0.14 and a live cd of Debian (on a usb stick). I'm installing Debian on a usb stick. The installation process goes along smoothly, but then, it's impossible to boot up the freshly installed system (I get a black screen with a blinking cursor). I read that this is a common problem but all the solutions I have found have not worked for me.

The underlying idea is that since Macs have EFI firmware instead of a BIOS, the partition tables of devices are different (GPT for EFI versus MBR for BIOS), and grub is incompatible with GPT (I know there is an EFI version of grub but it is said to not work well). So the devices must have both a GPT partition table and a MBR one. These have to be "synced".
The tools available for this are:

- rEFIt can sync the partitions, but I haven't managed to have it sync them on any other device than the main hardrive. If I sync the main hardrive, then even the live cd (which is on a usb stick) won't boot (black screen with "GRUB _").
- Debian has a tool called gptsync, which returns a message saying "no data partition in gpt table, nothing to sync".
- Mac OS X has a tool called gptsync which returns a message saying "unknown partition type detected - I'm not touching this disc".

The reason there is no data partition is that gptsync sees my main partition as "EFI system". If I could change that, maybe I could sync the partition tables. Can that be done? Also, something I don't understand is: the live cd boots fine without grub. So why do I need grub? Couldn't the system boot up without it like the live cd does?

Ubuntu Installation :: Installation On MacBookPro With No Optical Drive

Mar 21, 2011

I am about to install Ubuntu onto my MacBook Pro (5,2).However the hardware configuration is a little unusual, and may cause complications.I have removed the optical drive, and replaced it with a SSD, onto which I wish to install Ubuntu.Since this will be the second internal HD, whatever bootloader I'm using will need to be able to see this second disk, and perhaps the MBP hardware may have trouble with this (I don't know)? My questions are the following:

1) What bootloader should I use? (I'm not sure what exactly are the distinctions between rEFIt, grub2, grub2-efi, etc.)

2) Which partition[s] should I install this bootloader on? I am confused about whether I will need to install grub2 (or grub2-efi?) on the MBR of 'sda' (the HDD), or perhaps on the 'EFI partition' on that disk (originally created by OSX?), or perhaps somewhere else, or even at multiple locations.

3) How do I perform this installation? A link to the right (up-to-date) guide would be appreciated. (I've been browsing through perhaps rather too many help pages and forums, all written at different points in time over the last few years, when the technologies (GRUB2, distros, etc) were at different levels of advancement. And in that time, people have made progress in getting various things working on MBPs, their methods will have changed, and so will their advice/recommendations.) One thing in particular that I'll need to know is what to do when running the Ubuntu installer, to direct it to put the bootloader in the right place (or maybe we won't want the installing of the bootloader[s] to be handled by the Ubuntu installer). Also, it's still unclear to me what things like 'GPT-sync' (or 'bless') do, and what role they might have to play in this.

4) How do I accomplish this without having an internal optical drive? In the past I've been unable to boot MBPs from a Linux USB drive, and I understand that there are particular MBP issues with this. FWIW, the main HDD has already been partitioned into OSX and Windows (which I don't care about being able to use, actually, so if a proposed method makes Windows unusable it's of no consequence really). As such, perhaps some installation (eg of bootloaders) can be performed from within OSX? Alternatively, I do have USB sticks and a USB external optical drive that I can use. I also have access to another computer that's running Debian, so I thus have access to any Ubuntu/GNU software tools that may be needed. Finally, I can even put the optical drive back into the MBP temporarily if necessary in order to accomplish this installation.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Apple Keyboard On VirtualBox Ubuntu Guest OS?

I had a thread about installing on a Mac and decided to go the VirtualBox route and everything is running splendidly EXCEPT for the fnmode setting in /sys/module/hid_apple.

The problem is that the directory hid_apple does not exist for me to modify the settings for the apple keyboard. I'm assuming that when installing in VB, Ubu assumed it was a PC. Anyone know of a way to get the keyboard config directories in there so I don't have to hit Fn to do Alt-F2? Also, I tried to create the directory (sudo mkdir) and it returned "Cannot create directory...no such file or directory", but not in so many words.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Installing OS Apple Powerbook G4 Ubuntu?

Mar 14, 2011

I've had a Apple Powerbook G4 for a while now, but being mostly a Windows user I've never used it. I remember when it ran it's native OSX (Which I can't for the life remember) Probably Tiger? Anyways... I tried installing Ubuntu on it about a year and a half ago, the installation was botched and I left it sitting there with no purpose in life. :O

So I've decided to dust the laptop and give it another go. I've progressed a little further with my Linux experience, having installed and tested a few distros and even switching over to Ubuntu 9.10 for about 4 months. Enough of my life story and more to the point.Has anyone installed Ubuntu, or any distro for that matter on the Apple Powerbook G4? I know there are different versions of the G4 and I'm not entirely sure what my version is, It's the 1.6Ghz version with The Nvidia card (Err I think) and extra Wireless card installed. I am not very capable with Mac - After checking Apples website I believe it's the 15inch.

I've read the FAQ thread and will begin trying to install Ubuntu tonight at home, I just wanted some suggestion and some pointers in the right direction. What distro would be most suitable for my hardware? and What is easiest to set up?

Ubuntu / Apple :: Best Way To Run It And OS X?

Nov 24, 2010

I am a long-time Ubuntu user, but have been using a MacBook Pro and OS X for the last 3 months. I want to run Ubuntu on this hardware as my primary environment, but preserve the OS X install I've been using. Dual-booting would be o.k., but not ideal as I would like to use OS X daily (iPhone/iTunes stuff, Google Sketchup, Xcode, and a few other things). What solution will give me:

1) native performance from Ubuntu
2) access to all (or most) hardware features of the laptop
3) upgrade safe for both Ubuntu and OS X

Will bootcamp do this? If not, then Parallels?

Apple :: Best FS To Share Between OS X And Ubuntu?

May 3, 2010

So, my girlfriend wants to dual-boot OS X and Ubuntu.

We want to format her laptop as:

20gb - Mac OS (Mac OS Journaled)
20gb - Ubuntu (ext4)
158gb - Shared Partition (???)
2gb - Swap

The most common suggestion I see around on the net is to go with FAT32 for the shared partition. But I know FAT32 isn't journaled and has a max file limite of 4gb. I've also seen some limited mentions of adding ext3 support to OS X or adding additional HFS support to linux...

Can anyone give me a good solid recommendation for a -everyday use- partition to share between her two OS's?
