Ubuntu / Apple :: Installing 10.04 On Internal HD Partition

Jul 15, 2010

I want to install Ubuntu 10.04 PPC along side my mac OS on a partition on the inter hard drive that I created with 10.5 disk utility. When I get to the part in the Ubuntu installer where it ask where to install I only see the whole hard drive and not the partition I made, and when I go into the partition menu I click on it there but it won't let me install it.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Install Version On Partition Of One Of Internal Hard Drives / Using Option Key At Power-up Time?

Jan 17, 2011

I am running OSX Tiger (10.4.11) here on my trusty old G4 MDD with a "giga" 1.4gig CPU accelerator and doing quite well with it actually.I have discovered Gimp and Inkscape and love the open source concept.I registered only a few days ago, and have been lurking around to see if I can get a look at Ubuntu in action.Would it be possible to install some version of Ubuntu on a partition of one of my internal hard drives and be able to boot it, using the option key at power-up time?I guess this would be called a "dual-boot" situation. If so, can someone provide a link as to what to download.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Installing 11.04 On MacBook Pro - Can't See Partition

May 3, 2011

I've been trying to install 11.04 on my MacBook Pro5,2, (already have Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Windows 7 installed) but every time I get to screen where it asks me to install, the installation GUI doesn't see my partitions. The strange thing is that if I run sudo fdisk -lu /dev/sda I get:

Disk /dev/sda: 160.0 GB, 160041885696255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19457 cylinders, total 312581808 sectors Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes Sector size(logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytesI/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

[code]...

Seems like everything is fine, no sectors are overlapping, and fdisk definitely recognizes the partition.

Apple :: Mac Partition Won't Boot After Installing Ubuntu 10.4 / Sort It?

Aug 30, 2010

So I repartitioned my mac hard drive using the disk utility in my mac os. Shrink the mac HD and created a new partition for ubuntu. I installed Ubuntu and everything works fine and it was be able to boot back into mac yesterday. However, this morning, when I was holding down the ALT key at startup trying to go into my mac, no boot options come up, it automatically goes into the ubuntu boot option (grub 2) and i tried to go into the mac osx on sda2 from grub2 but it'll take a very long time and nothing boots up. It just says 'waiting for root devices'. Do I need to insert the mac cd and try to repair the system? All my files and partition are still there so I think its not completely gone.

ps. I have the newest macbook version (6.1?)

Ubuntu / Apple :: MacBook2,1, Internal Microphone Does Not Show-up?

Oct 16, 2010

On my white MacBook2,1 , the Internal Audio Analog Stereo device does work, and, in the "Sound Preferences", it shows up on the Output Tab. The MacBook2,1 has an internal microphone. In the "Sound Preferences", however, no device shows up on the Input Tab where it tells to "Choose a device for sound input", neither can I check or uncheck the Mute checkbox, nor can I slide the volume control bar. In sum, the internal Mic does not yet work. I need the Microphone for Skype etc.

Sound was said to work out-of-the-box already in Karmic Koala, but it didn't. Somewhere, I was then recommended to update to Lucid Lynx, which I did. On the page [URL].. it is, again, promised that the Sound will work out-of-the-box. It still doesn't. What shall I do? Boot Mac OSX, or get the Mic working? Here is what I have done sofar:

Ubuntu / Apple :: Enable The Internal Speaker On A Mac Mini G4?

Dec 12, 2010

I've got a final revision of the G4 Mac mini, the 1.5GHz model, dual booting 10.04 LTS and OS X. One of the issues I've had is that the internal speaker doesn't work under Linux, or so it's been reported on various post and sites. It turns out it's a simple matter of flipping some ALSA control options. With an ALSA mixer you must enable both the Speaker and the Headphone to get audio to play over the internal speaker. It will still play over the external headphones/speakers if they are still plugged in. I'm not sure if this is a problem with the ALSA, OSS, PCM or snd_powermac drivers or just something setup wonky in the configs. I've used both GNOME ALSA Mixer GUI and the alsamixer command line tool to do this. The alsamixer tool will mostly work in an X-term, as the F-keys don't pass though. It is fully functional on a console login. I also noticed that audio plays back per-user. When I switch from X to a console he sound is cut off, and when I get logged in as the same user the audio comes right back in.

Hardware :: Cannot See 2nd SATA Internal HDD After Partition In OS

Aug 27, 2010

I have Ubuntu 10.04 LTS just installed on my IDE 41Gb HDD. After installation, I plugged in a SATA 320 Gb HDD. I ran gparted, I partitioned the HDD in 3. It was recognized as sda1... I could see the 3 partitions in my "Places" renamed as I wanted, could see my IDE HDD and my external 1TB HDD. But after one day, computer was not turned off, I come back to it and... couldn't see what I previously had done (my 3 partitions on SATA just vanished?). I reset the PC and go in BIOS - nothing there. Turn off PC, reboot>BIOS> HDD SATA 2 recognized. Press F10 save, Ubuntu is up, but still no SATA hard disk. I go to gparted... no option with SATA. What can I do to have it back? I didn't mount anything since during partition I didn't have this option. This is what shows up now: (the 41 Gb HDD is now sda, before was sdb - I guess because it is smaller?)

bogdan@LORD:~$ sudo parted -l

Ubuntu / Apple :: Installing OS Apple Powerbook G4 Ubuntu?

Mar 14, 2011

I've had a Apple Powerbook G4 for a while now, but being mostly a Windows user I've never used it. I remember when it ran it's native OSX (Which I can't for the life remember) Probably Tiger? Anyways... I tried installing Ubuntu on it about a year and a half ago, the installation was botched and I left it sitting there with no purpose in life. :O

So I've decided to dust the laptop and give it another go. I've progressed a little further with my Linux experience, having installed and tested a few distros and even switching over to Ubuntu 9.10 for about 4 months. Enough of my life story and more to the point.Has anyone installed Ubuntu, or any distro for that matter on the Apple Powerbook G4? I know there are different versions of the G4 and I'm not entirely sure what my version is, It's the 1.6Ghz version with The Nvidia card (Err I think) and extra Wireless card installed. I am not very capable with Mac - After checking Apples website I believe it's the 15inch.

I've read the FAQ thread and will begin trying to install Ubuntu tonight at home, I just wanted some suggestion and some pointers in the right direction. What distro would be most suitable for my hardware? and What is easiest to set up?

Ubuntu / Apple :: Installing 11.04 On MacBook Pro (5,3)?

Aug 10, 2011

I've been trying to install 11.04 on my MacBook Pro for the past couple weeks, and I'm getting pretty frustrated with it. When I try to boot from a DVD, I either get a blank screen with just a flashing cursor, or it will ask me if I want to try, install, or verify the disc, after which I will get a bunch of different-colored blocks all around the screen.

I have installed past versions of Ubuntu on this computer with no problems, so I'm pretty stumped now on why I'm having this problem. Also, I've tried the Ubuntu Wiki and sticky thread on this forum, but nothing in either seems to help. Additionally, I have installed Mac OS X 10.7 Lion. I don't think it'd effect anything, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

I tried this, but found myself suddenly logged out of my main account. On the log-in screen, only my second account showed up. Luckily, I was able to log into that, and re-usermod my main account back to it's original userid number.I am guessing that my strange error had to do with the abnormal (for ubuntu, at least) userid?

Ubuntu / Apple :: Defragmentation/Partition Creation In OS X?

Mar 30, 2011

I'm trying to repartition the 60gb hd on my macbook 1,1 so that I can triple boot os x, ubuntu, and windows. When I try to repartition it all at once with diskutil resizeVolume, I get the error: "Resizing encountered error on disk disk0s2 gunton: No space left on device (2"

Everything I've found through google indicates that this means there is not enough contiguous disk space available to resize and create those partitions. I defragmented my harddrive using the online mode with idefrag, unfortunately that didn't work. I also tried boot camp to just do the windows partition first, but it says it that it cannot move system files or something, basically the same error as above.

My thought was whether or not I could either create an os x bootable cd (no dvd-r) and fully defragment it while it's offline, but a du -chs of the necessary directories was well beyond 700mb.

My next thought is the pertinent question: is there a disk defrag tool on the ubuntu live cd? if not, if i downloaded one and placed it on a usb drive, will it mount from the live cd? or is there another way to combat this partitioning problem that i'm unaware of? (i don't have an external harddrive, so i can't timemachine/reformat/restore system).
