Ubuntu / Apple :: Can No Longer Boot Into Mac Partition

Dec 19, 2010

I installed ubuntu onto a 20gb partition I created on my Macbook pro. Installation went great, but now I can no longer boot into my Mac partition. When booting up if I hold the option key, all that shows up is a lock icon with a white area below which I can type things into. Nothing happens if I do, and there are not hdd showing. The Mac partition is an option on my grub menu, however it hangs when selected and does not end up loading.

Note: I am on vacation from school at the moment and my live cds for Mac are in my dorm.

Ubuntu :: 10.10 Will No Longer Boot - Partition Disappeared

Dec 2, 2010

I booted my laptop up this morning to find that Ubuntu 10.10 will no longer boot. Here is some background. I have a Raid 0 setup with sda and sdb. For the last day or two upon boot, it was asking me to run some file system checks (hind sight I should have just sucked it up and wait for it) but I canceled out of them as I have been extremely busy. Also, I upgraded my kernel to the latest available from the repos. I am not sure if the kernel upgrade has anything to do with it or just coincidence. I have booted up with a live distro on a USB stick and here is what I am seeing:

Code:
root@bt:/dev# ls -alh sd*
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 9, 127 Dec 2 10:44 sda
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 9, 126 Dec 2 10:44 sda1
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 16 Dec 2 10:41 sdb
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 32 Dec 2 10:41 sdc
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 33 Dec 2 10:41 sdc1
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 34 Dec 2 11:06 sdc2
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 37 Dec 2 10:41 sdc5
root@bt:/dev# fdisk -l

Disk /dev/sdb: 250.0 GB, 250059350016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x00000000

Disk /dev/sdb doesn't contain a valid partition table
Disk /dev/sdc: 16.1 GB, 16125001728 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 1960 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x00004790

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdc1 1 1872 15036808+ 83 Linux
/dev/sdc2 1873 1960 706860 5 Extended
/dev/sdc5 1873 1960 706828+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris

So I am able to see sda in /dev but fdisk does not see it. When looking at gparted, it only is able to look at sdb and sdc (my usb stick). The weird thing is that I also have Windows 7 installed on this raid and it is able to boot without any issues so I know the entire sda hasn't died on me.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Boot Directly To Ext4 Partition?

Apr 30, 2010

I am dual booting Ubuntu 9.10 with ext4 and OS X with hfs+, and I'm getting tired of having to go through Open Firmware, rEFIt, and GRUB to boot to Ubuntu by default. I've done a lot of digging, and my results appear to be inconclusive. I have, however, been able to hypothesize that the reason that I cannot set my ext4 partition as the Startup Disk (via OS X settings) is because OS X does not know how to read ext4. I believe that the Startup Disk settings work by writing to Open Firmware, so I'm thinking that maybe something else would be able to as well, preferably something that is capable of reading ext4.

Apple :: Mac Partition Won't Boot After Installing Ubuntu 10.4 / Sort It?

Aug 30, 2010

So I repartitioned my mac hard drive using the disk utility in my mac os. Shrink the mac HD and created a new partition for ubuntu. I installed Ubuntu and everything works fine and it was be able to boot back into mac yesterday. However, this morning, when I was holding down the ALT key at startup trying to go into my mac, no boot options come up, it automatically goes into the ubuntu boot option (grub 2) and i tried to go into the mac osx on sda2 from grub2 but it'll take a very long time and nothing boots up. It just says 'waiting for root devices'. Do I need to insert the mac cd and try to repair the system? All my files and partition are still there so I think its not completely gone.

ps. I have the newest macbook version (6.1?)

Ubuntu / Apple :: Triple Boot With Data Partition?

Nov 13, 2010

I've been tinkering for over a week to try and get a functioning triple boot + shared data working. i've hit a road block. i'm using reFIt with SnowLeopard/W7/10.10. i can't get into ubuntu

*** Report for internal hard disk ***
Current GPT partition table:
# Start LBA End LBA Type
1 40 409639 EFI System (FAT)
2 409640 390772495 Mac OS X HFS+
3 391034640 781659639 Basic Data

[Code].....

OSX and Windows are fine. but whenever i select linux, it boots directly into windows. i'm hoping i don't need to install GRUB2 to the windows partition as that would defeat the purpose of reFIt (would it not?)

Ubuntu / Apple :: Firewire On IMac G3 No Longer Working?

Aug 21, 2010

I'm not sure if I have a hardware or OS problem. Firewire on my old G3 iMac has stopped working. Previously I've used a scanner and an external hard drive (Iomega eGo) without problems while running Lucid. Now neither works with the iMac, though they both work when connected to a PC. Both the PC and the iMac are running the latest versions of Lucid.

I can't tell when the problem began since I don't use the scanner or hard drive that often. I did try booting using the live 10.04 CD for PowerPC and had no joy with either device. The LCD on the hard drive lights when connected to the firewire port so power is coming through. The scanner has its own power supply.Checking with lsmod I see that both the modules ieee1394 and ohci1394 are loaded.I suspect it's a problem with the hardware. Does any one have an idea how I can go about verifying that? I'd hate to bin an old faithful without first checking everything out.

General :: Don't Have Permission To Read DATA Partition; Partition No Longer Visible

Oct 30, 2010

I've been using Ubuntu 10.10 for just under a week. Recently, a partition called 'Data' has disappeared, and all my music and documents along with it. The folder is not to be seen in Places or on my desktop. My only way of finding it is to go to terminal. But when I try to open it there I get an error saying I don't have permission to read it. In Puppy Linux and SliTaz I can easily find the partition and read it. What should I do to bring it back in Ubuntu?

Ubuntu / Apple :: Iphone 4.3.3 Will No Longer Work With Banshee / Clementine Or Rhythmbox

Jul 3, 2011

When my Iphone had the 4.2.1 firmware it mounted just fine with Ubuntu, OK sure it took a download of libimobiledevice1 and some other libraries but it worked, and sync'd just fine with Rhythmbox. But, as all manufacturers do, they have released a superior new OS for the phone which fixes all those annoying little bug. I have read from 4.3.2 they changed the itunes database version to an updated one. Now this is fine if you have a windows or mac machine running the latest version of itunes but if like all of us here you have an Ubuntu machine for a very valid reason... i.e you wanted a better operating system that wasnt going to cost the earth.

well, you are screwed as they have locked the third part access to the device's itunes library. I have followed long procedures trying to hack into the phone, modifying certain files, creating a hashfile and dropping this into a system folder to fool the phone into thinking it has the 4.2.1 database still but to no avail. Now my iphone is jailbroken, for the very same reasons as to why have an ubuntu machine, a good peice of hardware with good software that i can customise to run how i see fit, this error is the same with my friends non jaibroken phone and my wifes newly updated iopd..

Surely someone out there who has an ipod, iphone 3gs who are running 4.3.2 or higher has figured out how to fix this annoying "update" problem. The phone mounts fine and i can see a documents drive and the main iphone itself, so it is being recognised but im getting errors when trying ti access the phone in ANY linux media software... They all see the phone but cant recognise the database.

Ubuntu :: Windows 7 Partition No Longer Recognised?

Apr 10, 2010

After having some issues with GRUB2 not showing my operating system list, I accidently screwed up my Windows 7 partition by selecting the 'Bootable' checkbox in thePalimpsest(?) Disk Utility. After finding this thread (and the links provided in responses), the problem appears to be the same but, unlike the user in that thread, I was unable the uncheck the Bootable flag after checking it - the partition became totally unrecognised, and the Disk Usage Analyser shows only ~5gb of HDD space in use.

I have no other Windows installation on my hard drive, apart from the Recovery Partition which existed when the PC was bought. The thread I linked to suggested that the bootmgr file may be on the partition of another bootable Windows partition (although I'm not able to get to the PC in question right now, so I'm not 100% sure if the Recovery Partition was flagged as bootable or not)What I need to know is:(1) Is it possible to solve this problem without having to re-install Windows? I don't really have many tools (or much knowledge about all these things) at my disposal, and have no idea how to access the Recovery Partition files in order to see if the required Boot folder and bootmgr file are there. Also, in the file explorer, my Windows 7 partition is no longer visible.

(2) If this is possible, do I require internet access on the PC itself? Ever since I installed Ubuntu, it has been unable to detect proprietary drivers for my network card (whereas the demo from the USB stick I installed Ubuntu with was capable of detecting proprietary drivers)

Ubuntu :: Can No Longer Boot To XP On Dual Boot Computer

boot up in to chameleon, lists only Mac OS X as a boot option. Reboot, load Ubuntu 10.4 install cd, get to a terminal, mount /dev/sda3 /mnt grub-install --force --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/sda3

reboot, let chameleon come up, it sees both Mac OS X & Ubuntu partitions and I can boot to either or happily, now here is the problem... If I select linux and boot in to linux from chameleon, i am brought to the grub menu, where i can select the first choice which is normal ubuntu 10.4 and every thing is great... until I reboot and my linux partition no longer shows up in chameleon, as if tthe act of booting in to grub is changing something / deleting itself from the partition? and I have to do the whole thing over again. SO, not having to even go in to OS X, I'm not sure thats really the concerns more as I'm doing something wrong with grub.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Lucid - How To Access OS X Partition

I tried this, but found myself suddenly logged out of my main account. On the log-in screen, only my second account showed up. Luckily, I was able to log into that, and re-usermod my main account back to it's original userid number.I am guessing that my strange error had to do with the abnormal (for ubuntu, at least) userid?

Ubuntu / Apple :: Defragmentation/Partition Creation In OS X?

Mar 30, 2011

I'm trying to repartition the 60gb hd on my macbook 1,1 so that I can triple boot os x, ubuntu, and windows. When I try to repartition it all at once with diskutil resizeVolume, I get the error: "Resizing encountered error on disk disk0s2 gunton: No space left on device (2"

Everything I've found through google indicates that this means there is not enough contiguous disk space available to resize and create those partitions. I defragmented my harddrive using the online mode with idefrag, unfortunately that didn't work. I also tried boot camp to just do the windows partition first, but it says it that it cannot move system files or something, basically the same error as above.

My thought was whether or not I could either create an os x bootable cd (no dvd-r) and fully defragment it while it's offline, but a du -chs of the necessary directories was well beyond 700mb.

My next thought is the pertinent question: is there a disk defrag tool on the ubuntu live cd? if not, if i downloaded one and placed it on a usb drive, will it mount from the live cd? or is there another way to combat this partitioning problem that i'm unaware of? (i don't have an external harddrive, so i can't timemachine/reformat/restore system).

Ubuntu / Apple :: Installing 11.04 On MacBook Pro - Can't See Partition

I've been trying to install 11.04 on my MacBook Pro5,2, (already have Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Windows 7 installed) but every time I get to screen where it asks me to install, the installation GUI doesn't see my partitions. The strange thing is that if I run sudo fdisk -lu /dev/sda I get:

Disk /dev/sda: 160.0 GB, 160041885696255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19457 cylinders, total 312581808 sectors Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes Sector size(logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytesI/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

Seems like everything is fine, no sectors are overlapping, and fdisk definitely recognizes the partition.
