BTW my problem concern windows:

I've installed it and I've installed also the drivers from apple CD btw When I boot windows for the first 1/2 minute once I do anything its freeze like if it would be out of ram and after 1 or 2 minute it start to work without problems and doesn't freeze anymore

Ubuntu / Apple :: Use Wubi On Windows Partition?

I was just curious how many people have succeeded getting a triple boot from simple running boot camp on OS X and install windows 7. Then going to windows 7 partition and running wubi.[URL]... I have a brand new macbook air (one of the ones that just came out) and I'm tempted to try this, but if it doesn't work, then I will sit on my hands a little longer before I try to get the ubuntu on my mba. Anyway, anyone tried this? Especially with a new macbook air?

Ubuntu Installation :: Resizing Windows Partition - Install Files On A Non Windows NTFS Partition

Jul 22, 2010

Now however its not letting me resize the Windows partition, mounted or unmounted. It currently occupies the whole disk. I would rather not reinstall the whole thing over again, but I will if I have to. Isnt there an easy way to shrink a Windows partition? I swear Ive done this before and it wasnt this hard. Could it be a problem with the Mint installer that now asks me if I want to unmount my disks before it goes into install mode? On this PC I would like to have

Windows XP
Mint
Ubuntu-Studio
Edubuntu
One of the E17 OSs
Puppy Linux (to create a remix)

I am probably going to put most of the linux partitions on the second laptop drive but I want to install files on a non WIndows NTFS partition.

Ubuntu / Apple :: GNOME Shell Is Slow On MacBook Air 3,1?

Jan 1, 2011

I followed instructions on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBookAir3-2/Meerkat , including the post install ones. Ubuntu with GNOME 2 runs fine, but some animations in GNOME Shell are very slow, like switching to and from Overview. I tried drivers from xorg-edgers and x-swat PPAs, but things are still slow. The most relevant solution I found is http://live.gnome.org/GnomeShell/SwatList. I applied the patch

Code:
$ cd ~/gnome-shell/source/gnome-shell

OpenSUSE :: Delete Files On Data Partition Slow Because Trash Is Located On Home Partition?

Aug 18, 2011

KDE 4.6 - opensuse 11.4.

I have a separate ext4 partition which contains all my data (music, movies, etc). When I delete files from this partition it is very slow because it copies files from my data partition to the Trash folder in my home partition. How can I avoid this? Can't the trash be configured so that it uses a trash folder in each partition instead of copying files to another partition (which is slow).

Fedora Servers :: VNC In FC10 Tweaks - Apple Standard Client Is Slow Over Wifi

Jan 1, 2009

I'm relatively new to Linux, but willing to take a plunge and climb the steep learning curve! I've recently installed Fedora 10 on a spare box I'd like to have running in the lounge by the TV as a TV recorder. Before starting out with MythTV, I would like to get the box running the basics... and hit no major snags with display / audio drivers. I've finally managed to connect to the box via VNC from my macbook over the wireless network. The Apple standard client is slow over wifi, so have started using 'Chicken of the VNC' as the client. At the server end, I intalled vnc-server via yum. I've also tweaked things in ~/.vnc/xstartup so that my default window manager over vnc is gnome.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Lucid - How To Access OS X Partition

May 4, 2010

I have installed 10.04 on my MacBook Pro 6,2, and am trying to access some files stored in my User directory on the OS X partition of the laptop. I get a permission-denied error, but I figured this was a similar issue to the one mentioned in the stickied "How to Install Ubuntu 9.04 on Intel-Based Macs" thread. However, the suggest fix,Code:sudo usermod -u 501 -g 20 richarddoesn't exactly work for me. I tried this, but found myself suddenly logged out of my main account. On the log-in screen, only my second account showed up. Luckily, I was able to log into that, and re-usermod my main account back to it's original userid number.I am guessing that my strange error had to do with the abnormal (for ubuntu, at least) userid?

The Mac partition is an option on my grub menu, however it hangs when selected and does not end up loading.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Defragmentation/Partition Creation In OS X?

Mar 30, 2011

I'm trying to repartition the 60gb hd on my macbook 1,1 so that I can triple boot os x, ubuntu, and windows. When I try to repartition it all at once with diskutil resizeVolume, I get the error: "Resizing encountered error on disk disk0s2 gunton: No space left on device (2"

Everything I've found through google indicates that this means there is not enough contiguous disk space available to resize and create those partitions. I defragmented my harddrive using the online mode with idefrag, unfortunately that didn't work. I also tried boot camp to just do the windows partition first, but it says it that it cannot move system files or something, basically the same error as above.

My thought was whether or not I could either create an os x bootable cd (no dvd-r) and fully defragment it while it's offline, but a du -chs of the necessary directories was well beyond 700mb.

My next thought is the pertinent question: is there a disk defrag tool on the ubuntu live cd? if not, if i downloaded one and placed it on a usb drive, will it mount from the live cd? or is there another way to combat this partitioning problem that i'm unaware of? (i don't have an external harddrive, so i can't timemachine/reformat/restore system).

Ubuntu / Apple :: Installing 11.04 On MacBook Pro - Can't See Partition

May 3, 2011

I've been trying to install 11.04 on my MacBook Pro5,2, (already have Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Windows 7 installed) but every time I get to screen where it asks me to install, the installation GUI doesn't see my partitions. The strange thing is that if I run sudo fdisk -lu /dev/sda I get:

Disk /dev/sda: 160.0 GB, 160041885696255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19457 cylinders, total 312581808 sectors Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes Sector size(logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytesI/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

Seems like everything is fine, no sectors are overlapping, and fdisk definitely recognizes the partition.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Bootcamp Can't Resize Partition?

Jul 26, 2011

I was going to resize my linux partition after solving my other problem, but bootcamp prompts me with:

Code:
The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition.

The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows. Does this mean I first ahve to reformat the disk to fat32/nfts and can then resize or is something fishy going on here? Or can I just increase my mac partition using disk utility (erasing the linux partition) without having to reinstall OS X?

1) iPhone support: this is coming in 10 right?

4) I presume it is best to keep the existing OSX on it and partition it and use Ubuntu as the default, keep OSX for firmware updates and the like.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Boot Directly To Ext4 Partition?

Apr 30, 2010

I am dual booting Ubuntu 9.10 with ext4 and OS X with hfs+, and I'm getting tired of having to go through Open Firmware, rEFIt, and GRUB to boot to Ubuntu by default. I've done a lot of digging, and my results appear to be inconclusive. I have, however, been able to hypothesize that the reason that I cannot set my ext4 partition as the Startup Disk (via OS X settings) is because OS X does not know how to read ext4. I believe that the Startup Disk settings work by writing to Open Firmware, so I'm thinking that maybe something else would be able to as well, preferably something that is capable of reading ext4.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Shrink Mac OS X Partition On Dual Booting MBP?

May 28, 2010

After four attempts and diverse partition map problems, I finally managed to install successfully clean versions of both Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Ubuntu Lucid Lynx on my old MacBook Pro C2D (2,1) and a new 320 GB HDD, by following these instructions:[URL]

Now, I've got a big partition for Mac OS X (286 GB) and a small partition for Ubuntu (30 GB, as well as two smaller partitions for grub and swap). However, I'd like to shrink the Mac OS X partition to, say, 35 GB, and use the freed up 251 GB as a shared partition to keep files for access from both OSs. But Mac OS X Disk Utility won't let me resize the Mac OS X partition (and warns that it might not be a smart thing to do, as the disk has been partitioned for Boot Camp, etc).

Is there some way I can resize the partition, or do I have to start all over again?

Ubuntu / Apple :: Triple Boot With Data Partition?

*** Report for internal hard disk ***
Current GPT partition table:
# Start LBA End LBA Type
1 40 409639 EFI System (FAT)
2 409640 390772495 Mac OS X HFS+
3 391034640 781659639 Basic Data

[Code].....

OSX and Windows are fine. but whenever i select linux, it boots directly into windows. i'm hoping i don't need to install GRUB2 to the windows partition as that would defeat the purpose of reFIt (would it not?)
