Ubuntu / Apple :: Airport Extreme On Jaunty

Jan 16, 2010

I am a new Ubuntu user and just installed Jaunty (9.04, I think) on my iBook G4. Everything was surprisingly smooth with the installation and setup. Ubuntu recognizes my wireless card (it shows a signal indicator in the top menu bar). However, I can't get it to connect to my network. My wireless is open and I entered my static IP and DNS servers. I have read various problems between Ubuntu and Apple's Airport Extreme card.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Can't Connect To Airport Extreme On IBook G4

May 11, 2010

I was easily able to install Ubuntu 10.04 (powerpc version) on my old iBook G4 just to see what it was like. After installation, I tried to connect to my Airport Extreme, and it didn't work.

For the past few days, I have been trying to research how to be able to connect to my Airport Extreme, and I have had no luck. Apparently, there is some sort of driver that I have to install called b43-fwcutter, but I have no clue where to find it or how to install it.

Btw, the iBook obviously isn't the only computer I have, so I am able to download necessary packages on other computers, and transport it with USB flashdrives.

Fedora Networking :: Airport Extreme / NM Forces WEP Key - "Connect To Hidden Wireless Network"

Feb 27, 2009

Kernel: 2.6.27.15-170.2.24.fc10.i686
WLAN: Broadcom BCM4311

Problem: I run WPA2 Personal encryption on all my wireless devices. At work we use Cisco WAPs and I can connect flawlessly, simply by entering the password. At home I use Apple's Timemachine, which is basically an Airport Extreme A/B/G/N router.

I go to Network Manager and choose "Connect to Hidden Wireless Network". I enter in the SSID of my home wireless, choose WPA2 Personal, and enter in the password. After ~1 minute Network Manager spits back a window requesting the WEP key.... But I'm not running WEP. This is extremely frustrating. I delete the network and try again... same behaviour. My assumption is that this may be isolated to Airport Extreme network devices but I'd really love to find a fix. Just FYI: I have a MacBook Pro and a system running Vista that connect without a hitch.

Server :: Apache Server Extreme Slow, While Samba Server Is Extreme Fast?

Jan 12, 2010

I have changed my home network a bit, and everything works extremely fast, except for my apache server, which seems to serve webpages so slowly, it is abnormal. Even simple directroy pages are served in around 5 sec, and this is not a joke! It used to work pretty fast. What I have changed is that i replaced a hub with a switch, and that I linked my personal PC with my server together through a hub. I also installed Gnome desktop on the webserver machine. My network now looks like follows:

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Jaunty ATI Xserver No Backfill After Jaunty-proposed Update

Jan 9, 2010

Been using since summer 2009 the xserver no backfill from PPA: [URL] and it was working fine with my ATI video card. No heavy CPU usage when restoring from minimized and a general performance boost were the results of that use.But recently made an upgrade and realized that xserver-xorg-core package (check it from synaptic manager) has been upgraded to a jaunty-proposed version and the problems started to appear again! So using Synaptic I selected this package and hit CTRL-E key in order to choose the nobackfill version. This way things got back to normal!

OpenSUSE :: Extreme Memory-hog On Firefox 3.6.6

Jul 30, 2010

I just installed OS11.3 64bits with Firefox 3.6.6 I see an extreme memory-hog after only a day running. Now Firefox har been running for 4hours and is using over 800MB and growing with only one page up(Lotus iNotes Web-mail). I mostly use Opera web-browser (10.70 Beta) and have 4 page up and it only use 600MB stable.

If Firefox is running for 24hours the memory-usage will pass 2GB by doing nothing and OS begin to feel slow. This happens after last upgrade of Firefox.

Fedora Installation :: X-Fi Extreme Audio Not Outputting

I just installed fedora 10 on a Velocity Micro Quadcore with an X-Fi extreme audio. Everythings working but no audio, tried different settings, but nothing. What is the main config for the sound card? Been awhile since I've played with linux and I'm out of the loop. It's detecting everything as AutoDetect, tried other settings but nothing. I have another older machine and the sound does not work in that either. Wanted to kill two birds with one stone.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Can't Start X - Extreme Legacy System

Dec 12, 2010

I had a coworker (now former coworker) set up a machine for me about 6 years ago so I could run a web server from my house. He put on Fedora Core (release 1 kernel 4.4.22-1.2115 on i686), MySQL, PHP, and Coppermine - which I use to run the web site. I have done pretty much NOTHING to this machine except upload images via my Windows computers since it was created.

I do know I have logged into a nice pretty interface once or twice when I had to configure the DNS when I switched my home network setup (changed sub domains etc...) Yesterday I was logged in and in a misguided attempt to get VNC and Samba working and upon reboot I managed to screw it up so that I no longer have any interface outside of the plain on text screens I would see if I connected via Putty (or some other means like that).

As you've figured out, I'm so far from knowing anything about Linux that I'm pretty much dead in the water here. I do know that my services are all still working (the web site is still serving up pages) and I can connect just fine, but any attempt to StartX results in: /usr/X11R6/bin/X: /lib/tls/libc.so.6: version 'GLIBC_2.3.4' not found (required by /usr/X11R6/bin/X)

And I have no idea what to do about it. I did download and (attempt) to install XFree86 at some point (installation instructions for VNC seemed to indicate this was a necessary step) and don't even have anything on my machine related to that version of GLIBC (the problem maybe?). Anyway, I'm frustrated, and beginning to think I'm screwed, and I suspect that there's no "UNDO" button for this mess

Debian Hardware :: What Is Running IBook G3 Airport Card

May 27, 2011

I have a 2003 iBook G3 White Dual USB laptop running Squeeze. I have a weird question. I found that get the WEP or WPA to work with the card, I basically delete the firmware "agere_sta_fw.bin". As the computer boots, it complains that it can't find the firmware, because it obviously isn't there anymore. However, the wireless card works just fine once it boots up. I can connect to my WEP wifi immediately, which is impossible if it uses the firmware. However, when the computer sleeps (which it likes to do all the time when it isn't plugged in) it hangs on wake trying to find the firmware. After awhile, it gives up and comes back up. The network controllers (LAN and Wireless) are completely missing and cannot be re-activated unless the computer is rebooted.

Now my question is this. What is driving my Orinoco Airport card and Network port when it can't find the correct firmware. Is there a command or program that will tell me what driver it is using to run it. Then, do you suppose that I could map the firmware file to that driver so the computer can wake with out problems?

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Apparently Unrecognized Airport Card

Mar 22, 2011

I've followed the instructions that I can find as well as I can, but it seems I've hit a relatively unusual condition. Here's the preliminary stuff:

lspci output:

Code:
0b:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4321 802.11a/b/g/n (rev 05)
Subsystem: Apple Computer Inc. Device 008c
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16
Memory at 97300000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]

[code]....

Currently, the interface seems to be set up correctly in the YaST network settings thing, labeled as wlan0, and it doesn't have the 'Not Connected' indicator after it.

EDIT: iwconfig doesn't list wlan0; it just lists eth0 and lo0, saying neither have a wireless extension

Networking :: Cannot Connect To Internet At AirPort - Invalid Certificate

Aug 27, 2010

I'm at the AirPort. I can't connect with Linux but can connect with Windozzze. In Linux I get: You have received an invalid certificate. Please contact the server administrator or email correspondent and give them the following information: Your certificate contains the same serial number as another certificate issued by the certificate authority. Please get a new certificate containing a unique serial number (Error code: sec_error_reused_issuer_and_serial). The page you are trying to view can not be shown because the authenticity of the received data could not be verified.

The airport requires that one look at a login message and agree to its terms before making any other connection: that's what I can't get and can't get further. Up-to-date Slackware, latest kernel (self-built), Atheros wireless chipset, eMachines e725-4250 laptop. I've connected here before, always in Linux.nl. Who's objecting? This is in Firefox the only browser with Javascript I have. What certificate are they talking about? I just downloaded Opera: it works. It detects the defective certificate and asks if I want to proceed. How do I get Firefox to do that? Should I move this message to a different forum?

Ubuntu :: Hotel & Airport "Accept" Terms Of Use Button Does Not Work In FireFox

Mar 18, 2011

Ubuntu 10.10
Firefox 3.6.15

I travel (A LOT), in most hotels & airports that offer free WiFi, there is usually a re-direct page on which you must click on the "Accept" button for their (BS) terms of use.

When I boot into Ubuntu, I click on the button & nothing happens. If I boot into windows, it works properly. Tonight after booting into Ubuntu, I opened my VirtualBox running Win 7 & used IE to click the button so I could use the WiFi with Ubuntu in the Seattle (SeaTac) airport.

As long as I don't encounter the Accept terms of use button my Firefox in Ubuntu works perfectly.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Auto-load Apple Wireless Keyboard?

When I log out I can log back in by typing in my password. However, when I restart the computer it seems that bluetooth is not loaded yet and I cannot enter my password. So I have to log in using my wired keyboard, and then disconnect & re-connect to my wireless keyboard using blueman before I am able to use the wireless keyboard.

Is there any way that I can already auto-load bluetooth and connect to my keyboard before I log in?

Ubuntu :: Can't Update From Jaunty/2.6.30

Feb 7, 2010

I have a pretty old Sony lapto where I Installed Ubuntu minimal + xfce on it. So far it has worked great. The only problem is that I cannot update to Karmic. Back when it was released, and after a few days of headaches, I resigned myself to continue using Jaunty and wait for Lucid. However, recently, not being able to update webkit past a certain point (because of glib dependencies) is causing me some issues.

To explain the problem: regardless of boot options, any Karmic live CD will always freeze during boot-up, stating: "error machine check" and "atkbd.c: Spurious ACK on isa0060/serio0. Some program might be trying access hardware directly." Despite what it says, this is NOT a hardware problem, because I can run the computer just fine under Jaunty.

I've tried compiling the latest kernel under Jaunty (to see if I could upgrade this way instead) and no luck, kernel debs or compiles work only as far as 2.6.30, but installing either 2.6.31, 2.6.32 or even the 2.6.33-rc will result in the same kernel panic as with the live CD. I even tried to install a Karmic kernel with backports modules installed without success.

By the looks of it, I won't be able to install Lucid in this machine either, which is frustrating. I've tried reading about the changes made to 2.6.31 to find out why this laptopl can't boot into it,but so far I haven't been able to find anything. A possibility is the ATI Radeon modesetting introduced in this kernel. This computer has an ATI Rage graphic cards. Would the modesetting apply to it too? Maybe this is what causes the kernel panic?
