is there a way to transfer over data from one account to another? I made a new account for my roommate but since we share the same data is there a way to transfer that over?

But I was wondering how can I transfer my files and apps form wubi to the ubuntu installed on the partition? I don't want to install all the apps again and tweaks etc....
View 1 Replies View RelatedHaving a bit of a issue with Debian Squeeze and transferring files to the Sony PSP..Hook up PSP to USB port and Debian mounts it..I go to drag a 125 meg mp4 to video folder..Copy windows takes about 10 seconds to transfer it..Exit USB mode and there is no video there. Go back into USB mode and look at video folder on the PSP memory stick and there is no video..It vanished. From another after copy progress closed I right clicked PSP and unmounted it..
It error-ed saying device was busy and could not unmount..Looking at light on PSP i see memory stick is still being written to..i wait for light to stop flashing..About a minute or so..Then am able to unmount it..Go to PSP video and theres the video ready to be watched. Debian isnt accurately showing the copy progress...Its showing complete when it isnt..I have to watch the light on PSP to know when it is truly finished.
using Slackware 13.0, and whenever i trasfer my files to USB, like copy or cut and paste, it will show as if file transfered in an instant,like click paste and poof.the whole 1 gig file transferred in one second, and it wont show dialog box of transfer process, and then i have to predict some minutes and wait (till the transfer actually finishes, i have to usually see my USB's transfer indicator light), if i plug out before or my prediction goes wrong, i end up with corrupted files. This aint related to window manager, as same is case for KDE and XFCE tried thunar, konqueror, midnight commander, all of em resulted with same problem.

Just installed 9.10 and bloody loving it, Even though i love my Windows 7, This is just great learning all about Linux. Install was a breeze and installing normal apps are fine, but when we get to stuff like changing icons and stuff, this is just way over my head. All i want is icons that sort of look like MAC icons or Glass type icons, i downloaded a set from Deviantart and im that retarted i cant even follow the instructions...

However, when a software is not in the repo, I always wonder where I should install it, when everything comes together (i.e. /bin, /var, /man are all subfolders of the main folder of the software). For now, I've opted for /var/opt/ or /usr/share, but I'm not really sure this is a best practice... is there any guidelines on that?

This is one of the commands i found...: rm .mozilla/firefox/linux-blog.default/cookies.txt
It tells me no such file or directory.
I decided to install a game under Wine. It didn't work so I uninstalled it. The game still shows up under the Wine section. I tried going to the uninstall in the game folder and it said "Failed to change to directory '/home/user/.wine/dosdevices/c:/Program Files/Ubisoft/Gearbox Software/BrothersInArmsEiB/System' (No such file or directory)". When I go to Wine -> Uninstall Wine Software it doesn't show up, but the folder is still under wine -> Programs.
I brought up the directory and the folder doesn't exist. How can I remove it from the programs list under wine?
I'm transferring all my music (about 25gb) from windows to ubuntu. When I try and copy everything from my external hard drive it gives me an error saying there is not enough space. Is there a way to allocate more memory for my music folder?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI currently have an ftp server setup using Ubuntu 10.04 and pureftpd with mysql as the backend. All the ftp users are "virual users" that are stored in mysql. I want my existing users to be able to use scp to transfer files instead of ftp. As far as I know, you can only use ssh/scp if you have a system account. All of my virtual users use the same system account of "ftpuser".
Is it even possible for me to setup the users with scp access, even though they don't have an actual system account? I really don't want to setup system accounts for each user. I have a lot of ftp users and I plan on expanding that number, so adding system accounts isn't ideal, plus I feel like that will bring new security issues (researching chroot for ssh and how to lock down ssh).
I just installed ubuntu server on a spare pc I have and I plan on hosting forums on it. I don't want to install the gui on it and waste resources as the pc is not all that new. But I don't know how to download things into the pc and store them in folders through the CLI. I just want to know an easy way to at least download webmin into it and I think I can figure out the rest. I know how to install webmin from CLI.

Even after getting that installed I still cant get Normal compiz to work. I dont know if it is the driver or some other configuration.

View 2 Replies View RelatedGot a problem when I try to stream stuff off the net, such as watching ....., or listening to music clips.Basically, the internet just simply disconnects after a few seconds, or a minute at most after starting to stream - although it appears to be connected in the wireless icon thingymigig in the top right taskbar, eventually that goes though and says I'm disconnected.
While browsing normally, and using the net normally with messenger and looking throughwebsites,uploading/downloading via ftp, with no videos or music streaming, the net stays on - no problems.If I try to stream stuff from another computer running windoze 7, then these problems dont occur, the net doesn't disconnect and can stream till the end of time (or so it seems).Why does this happen just on the Linux machine?
Is there anything I can use to hide my ip and other personal stuff while on the web?

I don't understand the character between 8F374FEF and sudo in the command line below. Yea, I am a total noob, and if I have to ask then maybe its something I shouldnt be doing. Some reason recently the Update Manager has been saying it can only do partial upgrades, then it asks if I want to confirm the things, I look at them, they have a few set to upgrade, it also says it will remove certain packages that pretty much would render my computer useless.
Here's a screenshot of the box I took just a few seconds ago when I went to "Mark All Upgrades" in Synaptic Package Manager. You can see that wanting to remove important things like "ubuntu-desktop" and "network-manager". [URL]
I mean, I would love to upgrade my WebcamStudio etc to check out the newer version, but I'm not gonna upgrade it if I can't even access it! I'm planning on going back and manually checking the ones shown for upgrade after I get done posting this, and seeing if it might be a certain package.
I'm installing a new laptop for a friend of mine and he wants 3 user accounts, similair to how he runs his windows setup.
1, an admin account, we have called this account peacemaker.
2. his account
3. an account for his girlfriend.
The problem we have is that if we want to do anything from the terminal that requires elevated priviledges, sudo does not accept his password or that of peacemakers. we have done sudo -i -u peacemaker but it still doesn't accept either password, stating his account is not in the sudoers list.
I'm not a massive expert here, but research brought me to this page:[URL]... But that then just means his account has admin rights, which is what we were trying to avoid. We wanted a setup similair to windows where if you want to run someting with elevated privledges if pops up asking for the admin password. This works in the gui, but not in the terminal.
So in short, my question is, is there anyway of having the terminal accept peacemakers user rights from the his normal user account? If I add the account to the sudoers list like it suggests, does this again just give his account the prilvedges rather than saying supply me with the password for peacemaker.
this is probably not really needed and he can just have his account as the main user, but coming from a windows background, he would prefer the 3 user accounts model (2 normal users, 1 admin)
I was told to create accounts from the GUI through K > Applications > System > User Manager or something like that, but the "user manager" icon is missing. Would it be possible to make new accounts through the terminal (bash, Konsole, whatever you want to call it)?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI googled for a while without finding anything about this, so i created an account to make sure that others after me get an actual hit when searching for an answer.I have 13 email accounts in Thunderbird for work-related stuff. Thunderbird by default just adds accounts in a top-down manner without sorting of any kind, not even alphabetically. For most users this is not an issue, but for me and other powerusers who have multiple accounts with an uncountable amount of subfolders it soon becomes a nuisance to have your latest added mailbox all the way down when you actually check it quite often.
Why Mozilla havent included a simple drag'n'drop feature or similar for this is beyond me, but here is how you do it.For example if i wanted my latest added account - which is placed all the way at the bottom by default - to instead be placed at the top of the list, i just delete "account4" from the end of the line, and insert it at the front. Make sure that there is no trailing comma and no whitespaces anywhere.There we go. I hope someone finds this useful, a bunch of my colleagues sure did.
I have upgraded to Lucid, but was having the same issues on Karmic. I made a 2nd user acct we'll call X and we'll call the original acct Y. All of these issues only happened after creating X.
On X I have: sound Things wrong with X: I don't have the ability to modify any folders (even ones that are made from X's acct), I can't change the password or even access the Users and Groups, I can't modify any browser settings in Firefox but can on Chromium, the option for wireless is completely gone
On Y I have: the ability to access users and groups, the ability to modify all folders on either acct, the ability to change any settings on anything Things wrong with Y: no sound (doesn't even show the driver, but the driver is there on X's acct), wireless is completely gone (just like X's acct), even though I can access Users and Groups I cannot modify anything about X's acct
My first thought was to completely delete X since that's when all the problems began, but I'm afraid that since X seems to have "stolen" my sound card, that will be lost forever. I am also afraid that since neither account has wireless deleting X might hinder ever getting it back.
