First attempt to install KDE on Debian 6. I think I had a folder called Applications, which has sense disappeared. How do I get it back? It had a games, programming etc. sub folders.
View 3 RepliesI had some problems about a week ago with installing Python2.6-minimal (as an issue, it got resolved), however, after the problem was resolved, 'Add/Remove Applications' disappeared after upgrade was complete. I usually do not use this program for installing, etc., if I can help it, but do use it more often for web address reference when I am considering installing a new program, etc. Question is,is there some way to find out if it is merely lurking somewhere in my system... & then to once again add it to my menu list? Or, if that is not the case, to reinstall it via apt-get, aptitude, or some way like this? I could not find this application (or whatever it is called) in the Synaptic Package Manager.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have installed a core debian install on the NAND on a little ARM dockstar, which is fine as a slow little media storage server but really i need to put squeezebox server on it and my media collection. Theres no issue slapping in a 2.5 usb HD in to the dock with my media on ... the issue i have is i do not have room in nand for the server application/associated dependancies (plus a lot of read/write issues if i put them in nand) so i am wondering if its possible to ammend the configuration somehow to have apt automatically install the server software (a pig to do manually with all the dependancies) to the USB HD (rather than the default nand paths) without affecting the operation/dependancies in the core install in NAND
View 5 Replies View Relatedmy problem is that the Applications menu is empty and Preferences and Administration no longer appear under the System menu.I'm running 11.04 and I use Ubuntu Classic because I prefer the GNOME interface. The other day I was trying out various audio/multimedia players so I was installing and uninstalling several programs with the Software Center.
I started to play a CD in Audacious when the system crashed. The screen went dark but the computer kept running. I ended up doing a hard reset. Everything booted up normally and everything seems to run fine except my GNOME menu is messed up. The Applications menu is empty and Preferences and Administration no longer appear under the System menu. (I realize I can get to these through System Settings but I want the menus back) Furthermore alacarte will not run so that I can edit the menu contents.
I've tried using one of the old menu versions in /home/dan/.config/menus but they are all outdated and I cannot edit them. It also doesn't bring back Preferences and Administration.I've tried reinstalling alacarte and that doesn't do anything.I've tried using other panel programs like Docky and AWN but I have the same menu problem.I also tried resetting the panels to defaults but that doesn't fix the problem.
All of a sudden all my drop-down menus in the upper left dissapeared (things like system, applications, bookmarks, etc.) though buttons/shortcuts and clock, etc. are still there though oddly spaced out.

We actually decided that we could not delete the partition I wanted to delete because it was a root partition. After unmounting the partition, and one other partition with a really long directory name, all of my applications disappeared. I need a safe surefire way to resize a root partition. I don't want to unmount anything because we don't know if we'll be able to mount it again.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu yesterday, ran into quite a few problems but I managed to fix all of the bigger ones, and so far I LOVE Ubuntu. Way better than Mac or Windows IMO. However there's also a few smaller problems I'd like to take care of, and I decided to start a separate thread for each one. So I don't know what happened, but everything in my home folder disappeared. So, I recreated the folders with the respective names. However, they just don't function the same. The icons look different, they don't register the same way ex: Cairo-dock's shortcuts... the links don't work, they don't show up under Places, and they show up on my desktop. I can't delete them from desktop either because they will simply disappear from the folder as well, which isn't like the real folders. So my question is how do I get those folders back and get them to look and function the same?

I have a separate partition where I store all my documents, music, photos and videos, so that I can access them using windows or ubuntu. Now, all the files in the documents folder have disappeared. The folder structure is still there, including all subfolders in the documents folder, but everything that was in the folders is gone. The music, photos, and videos are all still there. I recently tried to set up Ubuntu One.
Postscript: I'm glad to realize that a recent simple backup had saved my data.
I'm not familiar with Linux and I do not understand technical wording at all. I was given this laptop as a favour and it is an ex-work Dell Latitude. I was given this to help me as a replacement when my Compaq working with Windows Vista stopped working. I do not understand the way Linux works much. I managed to upload photos before from my Ericsson K850i to my memory stick but this time when I tried it kept telling me that the path was invalid and such things which I did not understand. I created a folder for 2011 photos ready to go next year but the mouse pad is hard to control and even though I did nothing the 2010 folder went into the 2011. Sorry if I am not being very clear.
All I want to know is where did my whole years worth of digital photos go from my memory stick as I didn't delete anything. Would someone please help me understand all the different extensions or tell me what I need to do to try and retrieve them. I would be so grateful. I was nearly crying when it happened as when you right click in Linux there is no Undo/Redo button.
I have searched the board and I did see some other questions but I don't think they will help in this instance so I have started one. I hope I can get my photos back and also hope to hear from someone soon.
Just noticed that my games package has disappeared from "applications". I have two games on my desk top which are still there, however, the games package has gone. Checked the software centre which tells me that all the default games that were loaded on install are all still installed. I can't find them, where oh where can they be ?

However, since the problems I have to deal with while trying to install WiFi internet access I meet the following problem. I call YAST, get the small authentication screen, I give the right password, which seems to be recognized as such, but I never see YAST appearing. So I can't manage neither my hardware, nor my software.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have just installed Ubuntu (/dev/sda7) and Debian (/dev/sda4), but since I have updated all informations on Ubuntu, then Debian did not appear anymore on the grub list. There is an wiki I have found, but I an not really sure about what to do.

I installed the nvidia driver from the official repository for openSUSE 11.3 and now everything works perfectly, except i get a verbose splash screen after the grub menu.It has worked after i upgraded from 11.2. In my menu.lst it already says splash=silent.If you want more information, please ask, because i don't know where to look or what to show you (i'm fairly new to linux in general).

I seem to be seeing some weird behavior in kubuntu with KDE 4.3.2 and KDE 4.3.5 for Kubuntu 9.10 32-bit.I have a few programs in my home folder. For instance Eclipse and Mendeley. it seems that when i create a Link to Application does not launch them. Here is how I create the links.
-> I right click and create a new "Link to Application"
-> I click on the Application tab and browse to where the shell script, or executable is.
and when I try to launch them it does not work. The link is using the absolute path. I tried setting the working directory and using a relative path but nothing. If I run the link in a terminal it says "Warning: Could not find" and the application I set. Now this seems to not be a problem for system applications like Kate. If i change the link to launch Kate it works perfectly.
this is posable but am trying to do this "Create folder from a filename and move the file into the folder" i have 500000+ file's i need to do with is there a easy way?I really don't want to download them all make/move them with filemonkey just to re-upload them

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just booted up and was told to manually enter maintainence mode and run fsck which I done. Something came up about do I want to connect to lost+found: yes/no to which I entered yes and one other error was found which was fixed. When I rebooted again GNOME wouldn't start because it couldn't find the directory /var/lib/gdm. The services dbus, nfs-common and exum4 also failed to start. I can log in as root and use the command line OK, however the directory /var/lib has disappeared completely and this is affecting various packages.

I like how easy one-click makes installing applications and all, but I wonder if there is a way to look "behind the curtain" and know what it is doing before clicking it. I'm just thinking of if I use the one-click in the software section (is that part of OBS?),
what all is going to happen, or can I just grab the latest .rpm and when it goes to get installed it determines and downloads dependencies automatically? I guess I want to make sure that these aren't adding 101 repositories that have to be refreshed for updates and clutter things up!

to install debug symbols for okular which seems to crash quite often for me. However gdb and the kde crash application are unable to find them. The kde app says its not a good crash report and I should follow the guide.. which has already been done.

I'm having problems with the ubuntu software center. When I try to install any software it does nothing when I click the install button. I can click on the visit website page and download the source and compile it manually but I was under the assumption that you could use the install button and it would do it automatically for you. Am I wrong? I am running UNR 9.10 on an Acer Aspire One 110-1588.

As a long time Windows user, I am stuck on the basics of installing and running downloaded Linux applications. I've tried to read a few tutorials but am still baffled. I am using a Puppy based boot CD and, of course, the applications that come with the Puppy all work fine. It is when I try to add something new that I become lost. Example: I just downloaded a Linux version of the Firefox browser.
I click on the downloaded file in the Download Manager and kinda expect the thing to give me a executable set-up file, but just get a whole bunch of files. One available option is to "extract" them. I create a folder to extract them to and "extract". With Firefox I see nothing in that folder. With a few other applications, I see an extracted list of files but and try to find one file that will magically start and install or boot an application, but nothing ever happens. So, how does one download , extract, install, and then run a basic application? The references I have found on the Internet tend to be rather old or more complex that my brain can handle.
I was hoping you could help me figure something out... I am going to install a new distro onto my laptop and i usually set up partitions for / and /home just in case i have some issues and need to reinstall... i was wondering if there were a way to setup a separate partition where i can put all the programs i wish to install?
