Ubuntu :: Alert! /dev/sda/uuid Does Not Exist On 9.10
Apr 27, 2010
I would get the message that the uuid file does not exist. I've been online looking for fixes since yesterday morning and nothing has helped at all. I've read online that I should run fdisk -l to obtain info to share with others, but that command doesn't work in any command prompt I open. I am running Ubuntu 9.10 with the latest patches and I'm sure you guys know that it runs Grub2 loader...if that helps at all.

long story, I upgraded my system from maverick to natty, didn't like it so restored my system with a backup that I had done recently. after it rebooted I used gparted live CD to expand my partition, moving swap to the end of the HD, then when I rebooted grub didn't work so I booted with ubuntu live cd and reinstalled grub. then I booted normally but nautilus didn't work and had lots of problems. So I installed ubuntu again with ubuntu live cd, formating the partition and expanding it, no problems at all. But, I wanted my files back, so restored the system again, now the message that I get isQuote:
Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
-Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
-Check rootdelay= (did the system wait for the right device?)

I have a 64 bit ubuntu 9.10 / 64 bit windows 7 dual boot setup, each installed on different drives.Everything worked fine for weeks, but after booting into windows for maybe the third time, when I tried to boot back into ubuntu, the splash screen and xwindows failed to start, dropping me to a terminal to log in.After rebooting a few more times to see if i could wish the problem away, some kind of fix/recovery screen came up and gave me the chance to try to update/repair installed packages, which I took. Now, when I boot, I get:
ata_id[428]:HDIO_GET_IDENTITY failed for '/dev/.tmp-block-8:80'
ata_id[427]:HDIO_GET_IDENTITY failed for '/dev/.tmp-block-8:64'

- Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)
- Missing modules(cat/proc/modules; ls/dev)

Fresh install of 9.10. Update all. The update froze at the very end: configuring grub-pc. I let it run like that all night before settling for a reboot while the update manager was still running. (The update also raised the kernel version.) After reboot, I tried the newer kernel [2.6.31-17-generic] at the grub menu and got this error:
Quote:
udevadm trigger is not permitted while udev is unconfigured.
udevadm settle is not permitted while udev is unconfigured.
svgalib: Cannot open /dev/mem.[code].....
And, cat /proc/modules gives me a long list of modules (too much to retype for now).So my hard drive is there. maybe some errors on the / home partition [sda6] and I can get to the root directory.
FYI: MS-win XP still boots fine from grub.

Alright, I have downloaded the upgrade for 10.04 and installed upgraded from my previous 8.04. Everything was working all fine until I had to reboot my pc. When I did i got some errors
Mount: Mounting none on /dev
It goes on to tell me that my UUID does not exist. Then it says
ALERT! Alert! /dev/disk/by-uuid/xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xx$ does not exist. Dropping to a shell! It then drops to a very simple shell which has no flexibility and is very frustrating.
EDIT: This is the full error message
Mount: Mounting none on /dev
boot args cat /proc/cmdline
check rootdelay =(did the system wait long enough?)
check root =(did the system wait for the right device?)
missing modules ( cat /proc/modules)ALERT! /dev/mapper/debian-root does not exist dropping to a shell.

After installing the RT kernel, and updating my boot loader, I get this message. Code: ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/... does not exist. Dropping to a shell! It doesn't make a difference whether I pass the 'root=/dev/', or 'root=UUID=', options to the kernel. I've also noticed a message while the system was attempting to boot up. Code: host side 80-wire cable detection failed, limiting max speed to UDMA33 This is all strange to me as I was running the Debian 2.6.32-5-686 kernel, without any problems.

I was on funnyjunk.com yesterday, looking at funny pictures. I clicked the next button, and a page popped up displaying that the website had malware hosted by hit.d1.net, however when I had Windows XP the MacAffee Siteadvisor Displayed that there was no malware. Is this Real or Fake? Just wondering if it is one of those fake spyware alerts, like from windows.

I have learned a bunch about Ubuntu in the last few days but I am stuck now. I can't get a wav file I selected for new mail to play in fact the default one either. My sound is fine otherwise. Other files play OK. I have googled and wore my fingers up to the knuckle and still haven't found a clear solution. One poster even said Ubuntu does not allow a file other than the system ones. I can't accept that. If it wasn't possible why is the option there to select your own wav file?

I am running few tasks in my linux console and want to be notified by some kind of alarm, so I don't keep checking the progress of the task.
Is there a way to customize the alarm by specifying additional filters like "ERROR" message, etc? I think it will be a useful thing to have.

At first I tried the using the CDROM to install the server but around 8% through it could not talk to the CDROM anymore. I did attempt this a few times including re-seat the CDROM and it stopped at the same point every time. I then used the Mini install and that worked. However, after I rebooted I received the this error.
Gave up waiting for root Common problems:
Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
Check rootdelay
Check root
ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/bfaafj88-83ce-4dd2-8c6f-26o9a869eaea does not exists Dropping into shell:
(initranfs)
I then reboot from this point by issuing the reboot command and can then go into the rescue login with networking. I did select reconfigure GRUB and rebooted but same error as above.
System is an old Dell Poweredge 1550
Ubuntu = 9.10 server

Ever since installing aMSN 0.98.2 I have not been getting the normal audio notification of incoming messages although that feature is enabled in the program. Actually, I do get an audio alert for the very first incoming message but after that, nothing. Other audio alerts, such as when someone signs in or out, do work fine. I am using Ubuntu 9.04. The Windows version of that release works fine and that's what I've been using in recent weeks but I hate going to Windows for my IM.

I have installed snort + mysql + acid base, I add some rules into /etc/snort/rules/local.rules to test the alert:
alert icmp 192.168.1.20 any -> 192.16.1.21 any (flags:A;ack:0;msg:"NMap icmp ping")
alert icmp 192.168.1.20 any -> 192.16.1.21 any (content:"abcdefgh";;msg:"ping de windows")

After I restart snort and I tied 2 pc by cross cable (192.168.1.20 for windows and the victim is 192.168.1.21 for Linux where the snort is installed), my HOME_NET 192.168.1.21 and the EXTEREL_NET !$HOME_NET. The problem is when I run:
snort -dvi eth0 -c /etc/snort/snort.conf
I see the packet transmitted and received (the received conten "abcdefgh" ), when I stopped snort CTRL+C I don't found any alert in the result!!! Run time prior to being shutdown was 218.523030 seconds.

The one thing that has stopped me switching over to Ubuntu was getting my scanner to work. I finally resolved this issue. Here are the set I followed to get it working. When trying to scan with XSane I would get the device not found alert. Using the sane-find-scanner command would find the scanner as a USB device. found USB scanner (vendor=0x04b8, product=0x0851) at libusb:001:006 I amended the "rules" file for xsane /lib/udev/rules.d/40-libsane.rules added the two following lines

Now I have a fully working colour scanner, bye bye windows

My requirement is that I wanted a shell script which should read the alert.log(oracle) and should send the alert to my email if any error encountered on daily basis. I have a script which does the same job but at the same time it creates a new alert.log whenever any error occur. But I don't want the new alert log I wanted to read the same alert log daily and if any new error come should alert as email.
