Mar 11, 2011
I have installed ubuntu-desktop and can log in fine. Whenever I start Synaptic, etc and am prompted for my password I am told it is incorrect. I reinstalled ubuntu server and tried the same thing with xubuntu-desktop and I experience the same thing.

I've set up a user account for friends & colleagues that does NOT require a login password. Unfortunately, in this OS some things don't work unless you login -- sudo Must regular users have AND use Root's password?

I own a VPS (Virtual Private Server) and I would like to install a desktop environment on it. After installing the desktop enviroment, I would like to install a VNC server on the VPS, after that I would like to be able to configure the VNC server remotely via SSH and then log in using VNC to connect to that VPS. Is that possible? The reason I wanted to do that is because I want to use their internet connection to browse the web, their speed is like 6 times faster than mine because they have backbone which I can't afford.

Before setting up a dedicated web- and mail-server system, I want to learn it by setting both up on my desktop environment. So far I can only find how-to's which are based on server install iso's.
Is it wise first to install a mail server by using i.e. [URL]. Get it up and running and then install a lamp server using [URL]
Both servers must use my own IP address which is related to my own domain xxxxx.com I also need to understand how to incorporated these.
My desktop is Ubuntu 11.04 2.6.38-8-generic x86_64.

I have a server set up with Ubuntu Karmic. I am making it a printer server, and my printer is compatible with Ubuntu. (I tested it on my laptop, also using ubuntu) My problem is, the driver installer is graphical and my server is not. Is there a way I can just run the installer in server WITHOUT installing gdm or a desktop environment? So far, everyone I've read says to have xserver, xorg, fluxbox(or other gui), etc. I just want to run the installer through SSH, and I know about the -X tag.

Running web service and dhcp only on 1pc of a 4pc lan. Optomized minimal slackware 13.1 install (no GUI)on 30g fireball for only one user (myself):
Question is howto work properly in terminal environment: the rule of thumb is not to work on system as root to maintain root's integrity; since i do not have /home for users - what identity do i create to work on files safely? Can you adduser identity without /home as to not work as root? I found 'netgroup' but i am not sure that setting up the id of other machines on lan is what need to do?

I needed to use Synaptic Package Manager to install an app, but the dialog box ("enter the Administrative Password") that pops up before you can use Synaptic doesn't recognize my password ("incorrect password). I tried typing it into a text editor and it's spelled right, caps lock not turned on or anything.
In Terminal, sudo recognizes it, and it is recognized when I log into Ubuntu. I'm the sole user, I have admin privileges, I've been doing admin things.
I just now did System > Administration > Users and Groups and got a dialog box saying
"Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See [URL] for information. (Details - 1: Server ping error: IDLmg.org/CORBA/COMM_FAILURE:1.0)"
Moving past that, I changed my user password, and Ubuntu authenticated it.
How do you launch Synaptic Package Manager from the command line?

When I execute something with sudo, the environment that it executes in doesn't have all the environment variables from /etc/profile{,.d/} defined. I googled around and found that there is a way to get the environment variables from the calling environment to be carried over to sudo's own environment, but that's not exactly what I want. I just want sudo to read the /etc/profile and /etc/profile.d/ before executing commands.

a server at work has been accessed through the desktop environment as root. I know this is a risk and since I have never done it before I was wondering if there are any files created by the desktop that could compromise the system and how could I clean it up.

I installed ubuntu minimal install with xorg, lxde, and lxdm During the manual install, I do remember it asking something about extra encryption on password or something like that which was "highly recommended" and I chose yes, which probably has nothing to do with my problem, which is: Whenever I run something in the terminal with sudo, it just opens without asking for password. What did I do wrong? How might I fix this?

sometime ago i have setup a nice Debian FTP server. and left the company. everything was working fine for about 5 month, administrator was able to login to root, do changes and manage system, etc. Suddenly he told me that he cannot login via PUTTY, the root user and pass say Access Denied.Looked all over the web for at least a REASON, but did not find anything. I suggested to go and do passwd reset, via runLevel 1. i hope this helps him. But i am still curious why all of the sudden, in a locked down room, where only one person has access root get disabled.

When i install or upgrade the system I want to be asked for the root password instead of just the normal password for sudo. The reason for this is that the kids and so on uses my system and know my password. They do not know my root password though. I do not want them to install or mess up my system by pure fumbling, so is this possible to do. A simple change in who runs the updater/install features...

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 as a vm in VMPlayer 3.0. My correct user password is required to log in. When I use the sudo command or enter an area that requires my password, the password box pops up as it should.
The problem is:
If I enter my actual password, it is not accepted.
But if I enter nothing, as in just hit enter, it works. It shouldn't.
That seems just a little backwards and I don't get it. I've re-installed the vm and still have the same problem.

We have Ubuntu 8.04 running on our mail server and remote smtp connection does not work.
When trying to send with a client such as Thunderbird it complains about a wrong usernamepassword.
Receiving mail with IMAP and POP3 works fine through Thunderbird. Both receiving and sending mail through a web interface(horde) works.
I can remotely telnet the server at port 25 and this is the output of ehlo:
Code:
250-**server address**
250-PIPELINING
250-SIZE 25000000
250-VRFY
250-ETRN
250-STARTTLS
250-AUTH PLAIN LOGIN
code....

My root filesystem recently filled up. I finally established why - that my /media directory had filled up due to the USB-attached device having been unmounted for whatever reason, and SimpleBackup tried backing up without the mount in place - thereby filling up the filesystem.
I discovered that the root directory was full when the machine tried to get updates, and couldn't. So, I went into /media and tried to delete the backup directory and file(s) that were in that directory, but it tells me that permission is denied. So I try to SUDO the same command, and it tells me 3 times in a row, "Sorry, try again", followed by "sudo: 3 incorrect password attempts".
So, how to I get root privileges back again?
Code:
name@machine:/media$ sudo rm -R FreeAgent
Sorry, try again.
Sorry, try again.
Sorry, try again.

I just reinstalled 10.04 today after my last installation messed up after a month.
early when I first installed the terminal and sudo were working perfect but now, this is what I'm getting:
[sudo] password for dimebag:
<password>
Sorry, try again.
[sudo] password for dimebag:

I tried every solution I saw and nothing works. I've been having a heck of a time trying to install things.
