Fedora :: Add Shortcuts To KDE Menu?

Jul 13, 2010

I upgraded to F13 and I think its 13 for a reason - very unlucky for me. Screwed up my other Windows partition and I had to reinstall the entire machine (both OS's). Installing from scratch, didn't install everything, like I wanted. This changed in F13 install procedure. So now I'm trying to install Pidgin. Installed it with yum, but there's no shortcut in KDE menu. Why doesn't the install add this link? How do I add it?

Ubuntu :: 11.04 Shortcuts In Menu Do Nothing?

May 6, 2011

Not sure if it's something I did/didn't do but when I click in the upper left corner to bring up the menu (with Media Apps, Internet Apps, More Apps & Find Files) clicking on any of those doesn't prompt a response, no error is given either. When I type in the top bar something such as Terminal it doesn't do anything (although I can still get to Terminal with ctrl+alt+t).

Ubuntu :: GNOME Menu Shortcuts Are Gone?

Jun 8, 2010

yesterday I was moving some launchers in the menu editor, going a bit too fast, and I accidentally hit delete on the "Internet" menu. In an attempt to get it back, I deleted ~/.local/share/applications and ~/.gconf/apps/panel, assuming they'd be automatically replaced. I ran the updater today and it updated gnome-panel, so I $ killall gnome-panel 'd just in case, and once again nothing. I have all the custom launchers from ~/.local/share/applications saved onto my desktop, but right now I need all the original launchers back. I don't even have the software management launcher! It just shows me a little tiny black stripe because it's completely empty. BTW, I'm running Lucid 64.

Ubuntu :: Add Shortcuts To Application Menu?

May 7, 2011

I upgraded to 11.04. A app called Pytrainer did not work when downloaded through Ubuntu Software Center. So I downloaded the latest version from their website. It works! However, it did not add a shortcut to the applications menu. Instead, I copied the executable file to the desktop, which is more convenient. But I'd also like it in my applications menu.

How can I do that?

Ubuntu :: Making Shortcuts For 2 Games Menu

Jan 15, 2009

I have some problem making shortcuts for 2 games to my Application/games menu. The menu you can edit by writing "alacarte" in the terminal. So this is how I do, I have 1 game, its a Linux client of the game Tibia, ive unpacked it and its in a folder inside my home folder. If I double click on either Tibia or StartTibia.sh the game starts without any trouble, but if I open alacarte and browse to that location and choose either Tibia or StartTibia.sh and then click on the new item in the Game menu nothing opens. Here is the location I browse to:
/home/som99/Spel/Tibia/StartTibia.sh

The next problem is with a windows game installed with wine, if I drag the existing shortcut file to the panelbar I get the icon there and can just click it and start it without any trouble, but I want it to be inside the applications/games menu. So I go to the alacarte editor and browse to the main directory of the file inside /home/som99/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/gamename/game.exe and press ok but when I try to start it it asks for its main files located at Z:homesom99 the funny thing is that it starts if I move all files inside the games main folder to home without putting them in any folder :/

So I tried to write the following as is written in the working shortcut in wine:
wine "C:Program FilesTibiagame.exe" and I get the same error as it somehow think that the locations is homesom99 :S
Also adding in properties of the new shortcut item the following:
"/home/som99/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/game" wine game.exe
I get this error while trying to start it:
Failed to execute child process "/home/som99/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/game" (Permission denied)
I have put permission on the folders but same result.

As I am going to make alot of shortcuts to many programs both trough wine and games I've unpacked I would like to know how to do this.
I might add that if I open the terminal and write:
cd /home/som99/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/game
to get to the folder then writes:
wine game.exe
Then the game starts without any trouble.

Fedora :: Keyboard Shortcuts Out Of <CNTL>?

Aug 31, 2010

1) Go to the above website using Firefox browser. Wait for "Done".2) Type the letters 'J', 'u', 's', 't', and ' ' in sequence. On my system (Fedora 13/32bit) the window scrolls several lines immediately after I key in the space character, just as if I had clicked on the gray area in the scroll bar. Why?I've had a similar thing happen several times (over the years) while writing replies in Yahoo mail but don't know what the key sequence was.he result, however, is that the Firefox browser window closes and I lose everything I've written.Shouldn't control keys HAVE to be pressed to initiate keyboard shortcuts?

General :: Windows 7 Shortcuts In Fedora?

May 31, 2010

I recently installed Fedora, after trying Ubuntu and Opensuse. And it really works great! I'm still getting used to it, I had accidentally deleted my wireless network driver when I was deleting some packages. I'm only missing those Win 7 shortcuts, like 'windowskey + up' to maximize the window and 'windowskey + left' to resize the window to half of the screen and place it on the left. Is there any way I can get those in Fedora?

Fedora :: Shortcuts To Local Kernel Directories

Jun 7, 2009

When the kernel is updated, directories matching the new version name are created for documentation and source, for example /usr/share/doc/kernel-doc-2.6.27.24/Documentation and /usr/src/kernels/2.6.27.24-170.2.68.fc10.i686. Shortcuts to accessing these directories could be handy but the directory names keep changing. A simple way to capture the new names is to assign the most recent to environment variables. This can be done in /etc/bashrc to make them available to all users and subshells. Additionally, the shell option cdable_vars is set to make the kerneldoc and kernelsrc variables useful as arguments to cd. At the command line, cd kerneldoc or kernelsrc changes the directory to the proper directory for the current kernel version.

shopt -s cdable_vars # cd searches env, e.g. cd kerneldoc, kernelsrc
export kerneldoc=$(ls -dtp /usr/share/doc/kernel-doc* | grep -m1 ".*")Documentation
export kernelsrc=$(ls -dtp /usr/src/kernels/* | grep -m1 ".*")

ls is applied to the parent directory of the kernel version directories. -d tells ls to output directory names instead of their content. -t tells ls to sort by time, most recent first. -p tells ls to use a slash for directory delimiter (this is the default and rarely changed but the argument is included to be sure). The ls output is piped to grep. -m1 tells grep to stop after the first match to ".*", which is the first directory in the ls output.

Symbolic links can provide convenient GUI access to the directories but these need to be updated along with the kernel. I use a directory called /shared for my files that are accessible to all users. I have placed in it a bash script called kernelref, which takes advantage of the kerneldoc and kernelsrc variables to update the links. This script should be run whenever the kernel is updated.

/bin/rm /shared/kerneldoc
/bin/rm /shared/kernelsrc
ln -s $kerneldoc /shared/kerneldoc
ln -s $kernelsrc /shared/kernelsrc

It is possible to set a keyboard shortcut to start an application in KDE? As example, win+f to start firefox. I know it is an option in menu editor, but it doesn't work. From the many distros I tried with KDE ( openSUSE, Arch, Gentoo, Mandriva ), only in Fedora 12 worked this option, and I hoped it will in F13 too, this is one of the reasons I installed Fedora. So it is a bug, regression, or I am doing things not the right way?

Fedora :: Volume Keyboard Shortcuts Not Working Properly

Aug 1, 2009

I just installed F11 on my new laptop (Acer Timeline 3810T) and I have the following issue when adjusting volume. The keyboard shortcuts work, but they don't raise/lower the volume smoothly, instead they do it in 4 or 5 increments total. What's weird is that the notification that appears in the screen when I adjust the volume (the whitish square with a picture of a speaker, I think it's part of Compiz) shows the the volume changing in small increments, but when I get to the 3rd or 4th little increment from the right the volume is already muted. If I look at the alsa volume controls at the same time, I see it changing by the 4 or 5 big increments.

Fedora :: Why GRUB Does Not Display Menu Based On Grub.conf/menu.lst

Jul 28, 2009

I am testing my crash recovery strategy for my linux system and I am having trouble with GRUB. I am basically restoring my backup (i.e. tar) unto a different hard drive, but I am having problems getting the machine to boot without me having to type the GRUB commands at the GRUB prompt that is presented when the machine boots up off the new hard drive. I have tried to restore the MBR in two ways (the 2nd one is the one that gets me to the GRUB prompt):

1. Get the MBR off the original drive and write it unto the new drive (all via dd), but that did not work at all: the machine hangs right away during boot up. It seems to hang right at the point where the BIOS tries to read the MBR.

Code:

On original drive:

# dd if=/dev/sda of=mbr+part.bin bs=512 count=1

On new drive (new drive is now in place of original drive):

# dd if=mbr+part.bin of=/dev/sda bs=1 count=446 conv=notrunc

2. By using the FEDORA rescue CD, I installed grub unto the new hard drive as follows:

Code:

# chroot /mnt/sysimage
# grub-install --root-directory=/boot hd0

reboot and remove FEDORA CD Using the 2nd option above, I get the GRUB> prompt during bootup. I can then boot into the system by issuing the commands that are in the menu.lst file, followed by the "boot" command. However, I would like for those commands to happen automatically, just like in the original configuration. It seems to me that GRUB is actually finding all its stage files because I doubt the GRUB program (the one displaying the prompt) fits entirely in the 446 bytes it has on the MBR. So, it must be loading its stage 2 (and stage 1.5??) files from my /boot partition. However, if GRUB is loading its stage files off the boot partition, why does it not load/read the menu.lst/grub.conf contained in the boot partition also?

Code:

# ls -l /boot
total 22888
-rw-r--r--. 1 root root 1274567 2009-05-27 16:39 System.map-2.6.29.4-167.fc11.i686.PAE

Fedora :: "Keyboard Shortcuts" Don't Always Work?

Mar 12, 2009

I have been experiencing some problems with the Keyboard shortcuts in GNOME (Fedora 10 x86_64).The thing is that SOMETIMES it would seem the daemon (or necessary program) to make the keyboard shortcuts work is not loaded when I log in. What happens is that I realize the shortcuts are not working (volume, mute), but AFTER I get in the "Keyboard Shortcuts" window (System -> Preferences -> Personal) something else seems to load in the background (the desktop panels reload themselves) and then the shortcuts work again. To me it seems that some program has to be added to the "Sessions" list of start up programs, so GNOME does not forget to load it from time to time, but I don't know which one.

I can change the keybindings for existing shortcuts (for example, I changed goto workspace 1 to Alt+1 and this works), but I can't add a new shortcut. Specifically, I'm trying to make Alt+F1..F4 move current window to workspace 1..4 but this won't work. Nothing happens when I press the shortcut. Same problem if I try to add a shortcut to any other command that didn't already have one.
