Fedora Installation :: Acer Aspire 1410 Laptop Is Unbootable
Apr 8, 2010I have an Acer Aspire 1410 laptop which was running Win7. The laptop lacks a DVD drive and came pre-installed with a recovery partition as well.I've been searching for ways to dual-boot Fedora on it. I bought a Samsung USB DVD drive, but I burned two copies of Fedora 12 and neither would boot, nor would my Knoppix Live CD. I even updated the bios. Then I tried liveusb-creator from my desktop Fedora 10 system, but I would still run into strange errors that prevented booting into the installer.
Finally I downloaded UNetbootin and created a USB stick to boot Fedora 12. Neither Fedora 12 nor Ubuntu would recognize my network adaptor for some reason. Undaunted, I then used UNetbootin to create a Fedora 11 image which got me into the boot installer for the first time. I then used my Fedora 12 image from my portable DVD drive to install. The install seemed to go well.
That is, until I rebooted. Grub came up as expected. Fedora 12 runs into a very early Kernel panic (not syncing: DMAR hardware is malfunctioning) within moments. I tried rebooting into Windows, but it apparently doesn't care much for Grub. It sends me into the Recovery software and asks me to reset my hard drive. I've tried that a couple of times now and it's useless. Is the problem with Grub? I thought it would play nicely with Win7 and at least allow me to boot into it, which is why I allowed it to overwrite my MBR. I lack a Win7 disc and cannot repair the MBR that way.

Jan 15, 2009I'm running Fedora 10 [KDE] on an Acer laptop and am having problems configuring "hot keys" for it. First thing that needs to be mentioned is that the hotkeys used to work when I was running it on Gnome without me having to do anything. I assumed that this will be the case with KDE too. In any case, I think driver installation is supposed to be quite straight forward. There are two packages: acer_acpi and acerhk and different installation instructions for each one of them. The problem I am having is when I run the makefile script for either one of these, I get the following output in the terminal:

Feb 25, 2010I have tried the following techniques to try and boot from CD on my Acer Aspire 5515 laptop: Change SATA information to Native in BIOS. Set the Boot order for the CD/DVD Drive to start first, along with Main driver starting second.

My laptop is an Acer Aspire 5515.
BIOS Version is V1.0 (latest) from Acer.
PhoenixBIOS bios (?).
I have still not been successfully able to boot from CD. No matter if it says to boot from CD/DVD Drive first, it skips on to Main driver and starts Windows. It's not because I didn't burn the .ISO image right, because it worked on my desktop, which is ALSO an Acer, an Acer Aspire T180. What I am trying to do, is install Windows XP Professional, and dual-boot it with my Windows Vista. Only thing is, it WON'T boot from CD.

Ubuntu Installation :: Acer Laptop Hangs After Fresh Install And First Update / Sort It?
Jun 12, 2010I just installed 10.04 on an Acer 4736 laptop and was prompted for a software update of about 170 MB.
I went through with the update downloads and installation, got an error message of some packages not being found, and clicked on the "close" button on the dialogue to finish with the whole thing.
Now the Update Manager window with the grayed-out package updates didn't go away, and the cursor would always show the "busy" circle thing. I waited for a while, but nothing happened. I tried opening Firefox to check for anything about this on the net, but it wouldn't open.
So I left it alone, and it the screen went black (screensaver, I guess). When I tried to get back to the desktop, I couldn't. Screen wouldn't respond and it stayed black; no password prompt or anything.
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace wouldn't take me back to the login screen either.

Jul 25, 2011My landlord upstairs just got a new modem and WiFi by Clear.com and when trying to get the WiFi to work...it just wouldn't connect with my laptop. They have 2 computers upstairs, one laptop and one desktop that recognized the WiFi and don't have any trouble using it. Wondering if there is something I have accidently clicked or changed to make it not connect. It does not have an error message, it just does not connect completely.

Jan 7, 2010I just purchased an Acer Aspire 5050, and was trying to install Ubuntu on it for my mother. (No, I am not forcing it on her, she actually asked for it.) I burned a CD and put it in the drive, and it said Operating System not found. So I went into the BIOS and told it to boot nothing but the optical drive. Same error. I burned another disk with the same computer, and then another computer. Same error. (Hereafter referred to as "nothing")
So I went and purchased a 4GB flash drive from micro center. Converted my iso to img and DDed from my Mac, then set the BIOS to boot it. The BIOS recognizes the disk, but won't boot from it, giving the same error. So I thought: Fine, I guess I can't get _nix to boot, how about Windows 7? Put the disk in that I used to install on my laptop, genuine Windows 7 disk, nothing. I tried the Vista disk that came with the computer, also nothing.
Any ideas on how to install ANY operating system on this machine? I get absolutely no POST errors. I turned off Quiet Boot and looked, no errors there either. I would be fine installing any _nix based, it doesn't have to be an easy install. I can provide more information as needed, not a problem. I can't think of any more useful information at the moment.

Jul 30, 2010I just tried to install ubuntu 10.04 to the hard drive of my netbook as i prefer it greatly over the standard linpus one. The operating system booted fine from a bootable usb drive and so i thought if i install it it should run.
so...i got to work installing the system...it completed and asked me to restart, which i did. From there the boot up screen comes on for the pc.....the one where it says press f2 for setup and f12 for boot priority....then goes to a black screen. on this black screen i have a message which says...

Jul 17, 2011I tried to install eugene software on RHEL-6 64 bit server. After extracting (tar -zxvf eugene-3.6.tar.gz) compilation files from eugene.tar.gz, I used ./configure to compile. Since I already installed gd (>=2.0), compilation error comes in need of gd lib (>=2.0). Again I removed the software & installed newly downloaded. But still it showing same error. What's the exact error in this?

Nov 19, 2010I'm having problems with the screen going black on startup in 10.10. It appears to go completely off (no backlight or anything). If I press ctri+alt+f1 I get a terminal, then I can ctrl+alt+f7 and the desktop appears. I have tried setting the mode to the correct resolution in xorg.conf and I tried using the vesa driver, but it still doesn't work. My graphics card shows as sis 661/741/760

Mar 25, 2011I am running Ubuntu on an Acer 5742 laptop and running XP on Oracle Virtual box and plugged in externally (keyboard, mouse etc...) I have lost ability on both the laptop numeric keyboard (only the numeric keys) and the external keyboard when plugged in. This happened while I was working in Virtual box and running Windows XP.
When the laptop is on its own the numeric keyboard doesn't work (only numeric keys) either. I have toyed with the number lock and I have un-installed and re-installed both"keyboard input methods" and "input method switcher" within Ubuntu software centre to with no change. Not that I bought the damn computer for the numeric keyboard but it should work.

May 26, 2010shut down my RHEL 4 system with an error still present in the /etc/fstab file. Current symptom: When I now try to boot, everything hangs when "Enabling swap space". Highly likely, the reason is the failure to "Mount local filesystems" in the previous step (i.e. "mount point 0 does not exist" = error due to my incorrect line in the /etc/fstab file).Question: Is there any way that I can still boot my system, such that I can remove the incorrect line in the /etc/fstab file?

Debian Hardware :: Slow Resume From Suspend On Acer Laptop?
Jan 5, 2011My Acer Aspire 7552 laptop is running Debian Testing (just the main repos, no contrib or non-free). For some reason, it takes over five minutes to resume from suspend, and an absurd period to come back from hibernate (well over half an hour). Has anyone encountered this problem before, or have any tips on how to fix it? For the time being, I'm completely powering off every time I close my laptop because it's faster that way.

Fedora Networking :: Acer Laptop, Broadcom Wireless And Ndiswrapper?
Aug 7, 2009sometime back when installing FC10, i tried installing ndis wrapper, and later i installed the broadcom driver bcm431 (i think). also i didn't remove the ndis wrapper.
all was fine untill a yesterday when ndis wrapper and some related packages got updated which somehow caused wireless to stop working. lspci showed the hardware present.
to get it to work, i did a yum erase ndis-wrapper, followed by a reboot.
it may not be the most elegent way, but it worked for me.
hardware specs:acer aspire 4720Z (mine has broadcom wireless, others may have atheros)
Ubuntu :: 10.04 Splash Screen Garbled On Acer Aspire Laptop?
May 1, 2010I upgraded my wife's old Acer Aspire 1350 laptop to Lucid Lynx, which works fine, except for the fact that the splash screen both when the OS boots and is shut down is completely garbled and unreadable. The screen is also unreadable when accessing a tty via CTRL+ALT+F2 etc. The GNOME desktop resolution is completely unaffected and is perfectly usable. The splash screen works on MY desktop PC, but it does seem to be using some strange video timings, as my monitor recognises it as 640x480 but doesn't seem able to centre the screen properly. I strongly suspect that this is the cause of problem and my wife's laptop display just does not like the video mode. If I plug my wife's laptop into my monitor, it displays OK.
