Ubuntu Security :: Cannot Restore Deleted Directory Using Rdiff-backup

May 17, 2011

I have carefully made daily backups using rdiff-backup, so in the case of needing to restore I can do so.

But I deleted a directory yesterday, and made a backup in the evening. Therefore, the directory is not in the latest mirror, but in the incremental backup from yesterday.

Now I need to restore the directory. But I cannot figure out how to!

I can see the directory in yesterday's incremental backup; i.e., the following works:

Code:

Where [backupdir] is the backup (mirror) directory, and [nameofdir] is the name of the directory I'm trying to restore.

So, I have tried to restore. This is the type of thing I have tried:

Code:

Where to-restore.lst holds the name of the directory to restore (in rdiff-backup's format) and [restoredir]is where I want the restored directory to go to.

But, I get errors like:

Code:

Useful file specifications begin with the base directory or some pattern (such as '**') which matches the base directory. Well, obviously the file specification doesn't exist in the [restoredir]. That's because I'm trying to restore it! If I try to create an empty directory first, it complains:

Code:

How do I restore a deleted directory from a previous day's backup to a designated destination?

General :: /bin Directory Is Deleted After Killed Yum Update Command

Jan 7, 2010

I have a serious problem on my VPS. I ran "yum update" and then hit the Ctrl+C to cancel when I realized that I need to specify a package to update, not all of them, but when the console returned suddenly I lost the connection, when I try to reconnect to the machine, it says /bin/bash not found !! even when I try to issue commands from the VPS control panel, it reports that the commands are not there

I can issue a ticket for the ISP to resolve this, but I need to know the risks before I do this, I have no backup on MySQL and 2 live web applications, although they are still running, I am afraid if I restarted the VPS everything will be gone.

General :: Deleted Root Directory - How To Recover System Data

Feb 27, 2010

I have accidentally ended up in deleting my root directory while I blindly fired command while watching movie.

I fired following command
#rm -rf ~/<SPACE>*.out
instead of this command
#rm -rf ~/*.out

Things already done:
1) Created /root directory relogged to get some of basic settings of gnome and Desktop.
2) Things went well now when I login my desktop ,gnome environment and other things looks to be working well only prompt on my terminal has changed. I can fix it any ways.

Things I want to ask:
1) I haven't studied much about contents of /root directory to best of my knowledge is it like other user's home directory with some basic configuration files for mostly required applications. SO my question is have I lost any thing important system file or something?
2) If I have lost any important configuration or system data how can I recover it without reinstalling whole system? (My opinion about this is, It is quite possible but to do so, as far as I know capabilities of linux. But I still want comments from experts before I try any things on it because I don't want to backup my whole HDD and reinstall the whole stuff again for me and also my sister's stuff in MS.)

Ubuntu :: Deleted Files On USB Drive Not Actually Deleted?

Jun 7, 2010

I searched the forum with various terms and didn't find anything, so my apologies if this is a common and/or newbie problem. It seems that when I have a USB driveplugged in to switch the files around, those that I delete are still taking up space. I first noticed it with a Chinese MP3 player and thought it was the player being crappy. I could still play all the songs that were supposedly gone. Today, I noticed it with a little thumb drive that I've had for years. I plugged it into my husband's computer running winXP, and the files showed up in a weird, unusable form. I was able to delete them for real.

Ubuntu :: Hidden Directory 'RECYCLER' Creates .exe File In Directory Called 0x2D9FA278

May 30, 2011

I've done a low level format on them so they're completely empty. When I use them with my windows machines, they're absolutely fine. When I plug them into my Ubuntu machine, there is a hidden directory created called 'RECYCLER' which I'm assuming is for deleted files? However, it also creates a .exe file in this directory called 0x2D9FA278 which has an Icon with an H in it and a comment of 'Facebook Photo' This has the effect of making all the directories on the stick into shortcuts! I googled the file name and it seems to be some sort of Trojan, but I don't understand how it's go into my Ubuntu machine, I've scanned with ClamAV and it finds nothing.

Ubuntu :: Cannot Mount Unencrypted Directory To Encrypted Home Directory With Fstab

Aug 26, 2010

I have Ubuntu Karmic. I chose to install with an encrypted home directory. Recently I got a warning that I only had 2GB of drive space left. This is mostly because of my videos. So I went and bought a new hard drive and partitioned it and made 1 ext4 partition and copied my videos all to the new hard drive. I added a line in my fstab to mount the new hard drive to ~/videos, but when I reboot the computer, there is a screen saying something like "error mounting /home/me/videos, press S to skip or something else to reboot". If I press S to skip, then when my system comes up there is a video directory but it's empty because my other hard drive didn't get mounted. I can run sudo mount /dev/sdb video/ and it will mount fine and I can see all my videos, so why can't fstab mount it? Does this have something to do with my encrypted home directory?

Ubuntu :: Directory Exists But Bash Says It Doesn't - No Such File Or Directory

Aug 19, 2011

I've run into a problem with my bash program.

Code:a mkdir -p /home/chris/Downloads/ARCHIVE/`date -I` find /home/chris/Downloads* -mtime +14 -exec "cp {} /home/chris/Downloads/ARCHIVE/`date -I` ;

It's meant to move old files from my Downloads folder into an archive file (later tar them). The directory exists, I've used $PWD and nautilus and ls to make sure it's there, yet for every file it gives

Code: find: `cp /home/chris/Download/foo.bar /home/chris/Downloads/ARCHIVE/2011-08-19': No such file or directory I tried to test it on a different destination, specifically my home folder. IT still gave me the error.IS it a bad syntax within find or something else? I'm running a 32-bit system with 11.04

Fedora Networking :: When Try To Mount The Share To A Different Directory On The Server, Receive A 'no Such Directory' Error?

Dec 18, 2010

I have a server with Fedora 13 with which I would like to get NFS working. I have looked up multiple howto's and tutorials, but I'm having a problem not addressed by any of them.Official how-to, another how-to, and another how-to.I have verified that nfs-utils, nfs-utils-lib, portmap, and system-config-nfs are installed and running. I have verified that I have, in fact, shared the directory that I want to share, and that the proper permissions are set.

I had to go through some gyrations to get the Belkin wireless N router to allow my server to have a static IP. However, I can ping the server from the nfs client (a toshiba satellite running mint 8), and vice versa. I have (for now) disabled firewalls on both computers. I think I have disabled SELinux on Fedora 13 (for now). When I attempt to connect to the server from the client, the output looks like this:Quote:

aragorn ~ # mount -v 192.168.2.101:/test /home/kelev/test/
mount: no type was given - I'll assume nfs because of the colon
mount.nfs: timeout set for Sat Dec 18 12:21:09 2010

I want to point a folder to another folder. This isn't possible with fstab as I've understood, since that's about mounting volumes. I guess the mount command can be used, but I'd like to mount the directory permanently and I'm not aware of if that's possible with the mount command. Maybe a soft link can be a solution, but that doesn't feel like a "clean" solution. Then I have to enter the /home/<username>/Pictures directory and then click the soft link?

Ubuntu :: Server Directory Can't Delete Directory / Fix This?

Jul 9, 2011

Ubuntu server recently had issues with a disk. fsck seemed to correct everything, but I have one directory that I can't delete, chown, chgrp, chmod, etc.

Here's the listing for the directory
dr-x-wxrwt 2 16709 25134 8192 2020-08-23 22:34 UDLEDATB.DBF

Note the sticky bit is set and the uid is a number that does not appear in /etc/passwd.

Even as root, any attempt to delete, chmod, chown, etc. gives "Operation not permitted".

Since sticky bit on a directory restricts delete to the owner and the owner is invalid, I am stuck. I need to delete this directory.

How can I fix this?
