Ubuntu :: Cannot Mount Unencrypted Directory To Encrypted Home Directory With Fstab

I have Ubuntu Karmic. I chose to install with an encrypted home directory. Recently I got a warning that I only had 2GB of drive space left. This is mostly because of my videos. So I went and bought a new hard drive and partitioned it and made 1 ext4 partition and copied my videos all to the new hard drive. I added a line in my fstab to mount the new hard drive to ~/videos, but when I reboot the computer, there is a screen saying something like "error mounting /home/me/videos, press S to skip or something else to reboot". If I press S to skip, then when my system comes up there is a video directory but it's empty because my other hard drive didn't get mounted. I can run sudo mount /dev/sdb video/ and it will mount fine and I can see all my videos, so why can't fstab mount it? Does this have something to do with my encrypted home directory?
I ran fsck on the wrong partition (which was mounted) and in my haste blew up the file system on that partition. Now here's the kicker, I had 450Gb of data and documents on that partition that was in an encrypted home directory. So the long and the short of it I ran fsck again and I was able to recover all the files, and they are now residing on a Lost+Found folder on my hard drive.I have located the encrypted files, but I don't know what to do with them.
I tried upgrading to 10.04, and now when it boots it just goes into a grub2 terminal and doesn't display a boot menu. I tried re-installing grub2 from the live cd, but that didn't do anything. I figured if I've hosed the last install I'll install from scratch, but I can't even access my files from the live cd! I did a bit of searching and everyone seems to just encrypt ~/Private, whereas I've encrypted the whole home directory. So much for security... In the live cd, it has a readme.txt and says to type "ecryptfs-mount-private" to access the files, but it just gives the error "ERROR: Encrypted private directory is not setup properly". What do I do?
my CPU passed away, got a new system, installed a new 9.04 and blew it up to studio. have 2 new disks and my old raid 0 lvm. mounted is ( lvdisplay) , user rights fixed fine. I do have my old login name and passwd in a book. How can I open the data it was the old encrypted home directory. I have an icon "Acess your private Data" and something called link to Acess Your private data. There I can read link (broken) so the broke link is sorted out, as i do have now a directory in my home with the same name as it has been, /home/coconews/ and that is fine
Ubuntu 10.04 (64)I have a second drive (currently mounted as /disk2).I want my home directory (/home/jb) to include this second disk as JUST a separate 'folder' accessible from my home area.want the data on the second disk to be encrypted, (just like my /home/jb folder is now).I would prefer to 'blend' the second drive into my existing setup.I'm looking for the safest way to achieve this, don't mind editing fstab etc. or getting my hands dirty on the cli.
I installed Ubuntu Server because I want to learn Linux and I want to learn about servers. I did a newbie tutorial and then shut down. When I booted up today, the files in my home directory were replaced by Access-your-private-data.desktop and readme.txt, but I have no idea why. I followed the instructions in readme.txt and typed ecryptfs-mount-private. It told me
INFO: Your private directory has been mounted. INFO: To see this change in your current shell: cd /home/rmob
But if I do ls /home/rmob, it still shows me Access-your-private-data.desktop and readme.txt instead of the files I created there yesterday. Every time I reboot, it tells me
keyctl_search: Required key not available Perhaps try the interactive 'ecryptfs-mount-private'
If I try ecryptfs-mount-private again, it still tells me it has mounted it, but still just shows me those same two files. Googling about this tells me this means the directory got encrypted somehow. I tried typing touch ~/.ecryptfs/auto-mount which I found in this tutorial, but it didn't make a difference and I can't find any other solution anywhere.
Apparently after an upgrade, I lost access to my encrypted home directory. Looks like upgrade scripts changed the scripts that mounted my encrypted home directory. As I don't have my ecryptfs password handy, is there any way to revert the things back as they were? I have liked Ubuntu all the way but after this upgrade-mess-up, I might change my view.
I had errors pop up when I tried updating my 10.10 to 11.04 so I ended up having to do it from a Live USB which installs it over everything (fine by me).Unfortunately I forgot I had an encrypted /home directory. So various messages and stuff came up when I tried to log in.nfortunately I don't remember what my encryption passphrase is offhand, so I moved it to a slightly different folder name and had to have a new directory created for my username.It's still there, but how can I try to open it trying the various versions of the passphrase I think it may be? Can I double-click it and try?Also, in the future what is the best way to handle a "fresh" install that I want to connect to my encrypted /home directory?
I am having a problem setting up an encrypted home directory with openSUSE 11.3. I used Yast User and Group Management to edit an existing user to encrypt the home directory and the user.key and user.img files were created in the /home directory. I tried it out and logged in as user and created a new file. I logged out and logged in as a different user and was able to see the newly created file in the first users home directory.
I figured I did something wrong so I went back to Yast and deleted the user. I deleted the /home/user directory using file manager su mode. I tried again to create a new user with an encrypted home directory using Yast and now when Yast tries to write the changes I get an error: "pam_mount is already setup for user. Use --replace to replace the existing entry." I do not know how to proceed from here except to try with a different user name as I do not understand what the error message means and what command to use --replace with.
I am running ubuntu 11.04 I'd like to encrypt my home folder. - how can it be done, without creating new user/starting from scratch. -I'd like to keep all the files and desktop settings - the only change should be that the folder is encrypted now.
I have an interdependent collection of scripts in my ~/bin directory as well as a developed ~/.vim directory and some other libraries and such in other subdirectories. I've been versioning all of this using git, and have realized that it would be potentially very easy and useful to do development and testing of new and existing scripts, vim plugins, etc. using a cloned repo, and then pull the working code into my actual home directory with a merge.
The easiest way to do this would seem to be to just change & export $HOME, eg
cd ~/testing; git clone ~ home export HOME=~/testing/home cd ~ screen -S testing-home # start vim, write/revise plugins, edit scripts, etc. # test revisions
However since I've never tried this before I'm concerned that some programs, environment variables, etc., may end up using my actual home directory instead of the exported one. Is this a viable strategy? Are there just a few outliers that I should be careful about?
have a Debian server which I use to hold my home directory for my user account. I used to use Windows 7 and connect to my /home/username directory via Samba which worked great. I could access all of my files as if they were sitting on my local PC, but they were actually sitting on my Debian server.
Now I have decided to give Ubuntu 10.10 a try (looks promising so far!).One thing I'm not sure how to do is to mount my home directory from my server! I am able to open an sftp connection to my server, but not able to access them natively as they were /home/username on my local machine.I'm assuming I need to mount my home directory somewhere in my fstab before it starts up, but which protocol should I use? I'm used to using windows networking, but am trying to get more into linux.Should I use NFS?
We recently had a serious loss of data because of SSHFS mounting. A user in our group mounted the entire home directory of our server (/home). This was so they could easily move between user folders to read/write data from other people involved in the same project. They then deleted several folders that were not in there home directory.
Now I know this is a bad idea and that there should be a dedicated "projects" folder where everyone collaborates and does their stuff. Such a folder/system exits but I can't make them use it. My question: Is there anyway to configure SSHFS such that the only thing the user's can mount is their home directory? Obviously this won't fix the problem since they can sym-link to other folders but I've got to start somewhere. Perhaps there's a better solution (one that doesn't involve me nagging users about proper form).
Recently I mounted a larger partition into my home directory since I was running out of space, Everything went smoothly, but it caused me to wonder about something I cant figure out. While playing with the mount unmount commands when I was copying everything over... before editing my fstab.
Is there a way to access the files that existed in a directory before you mount a partition to that directory? after mount the original files are gone.unmount and they are back, Where do they go?
I have a server with Fedora 13 with which I would like to get NFS working. I have looked up multiple howto's and tutorials, but I'm having a problem not addressed by any of them.Official how-to, another how-to, and another how-to.I have verified that nfs-utils, nfs-utils-lib, portmap, and system-config-nfs are installed and running. I have verified that I have, in fact, shared the directory that I want to share, and that the proper permissions are set.
I had to go through some gyrations to get the Belkin wireless N router to allow my server to have a static IP. However, I can ping the server from the nfs client (a toshiba satellite running mint 8), and vice versa. I have (for now) disabled firewalls on both computers. I think I have disabled SELinux on Fedora 13 (for now).When I attempt to connect to the server from the client, the output looks like this:Quote:

I can not use nfs from F10 client to F12 server. nfs mount on F10 to F12 times out anf nfs4 mount gives "mount.nfs4: mounting localhost:/home failed, reason given by server: No such file or directory" I have tried to close firewall and set selinux to permissive mode on both client and server with same result. Samba works fine. On server [root@flokipal ~]# mount -t nfs4 localhost:/home /media/tonlist mount.nfs4: mounting localhost:/home failed, reason given by server: No such file or directory

I'm using Mac OS X's Terminal.app shell to compile and run Fortran programs. One such program resides outside of my home directory (it is in the Applications folder, which resides on my hard drive but seems to be outside of my home folder). How can I navigate into this directory using Terminal.app to run the programs that reside there?
I'd like to mount the directory /var/www/mysite to the directory /home/daniel/mysite, but also have the user of the mounted files mapped from the original user (www-data) to my own user (daniel). So that the file /var/www/mysite/index.php who's user is www-data will appear in the mounted directory as /home/daniel/mysite/index.php and be owned by daniel - and alternatively, if I create a file /home/daniel/mysite/test.php with my own user, it will be created in the original directory under the user www-data Is it possible? If not, what alternatives do I have so I can use an IDE and still make sure all the files belong to the HTTP server's user?
We currently have a NFS shared Directory mounted as read-only on our server.This directory contains multiple sub-directories and files. It being read-only is a equirement. Now, we need a directory underneath to be read-write. Is there a graceful way to make that happen? Like a special mount option to use? Basically objective is: /u01 is mounted as read-only and has 3 directories: dir1, dir2, dir3 dir3 has 2 sub-directories- sub1,sub2/u01/dir3/sub2 needs to be read-write, while all other are read-only.
The system disk on my lenny 64b system is using LVM, encryptions and XFS (/boot is ext2). I'm looking forward to turning it into old-style, ext4 unencrypted partitions (and thinking about btrfs in the future. Despite having used Debian for many years now, I haven't really ever tried a true migration and all of the guides out there are concerned with turning an unecrypted to encrypted. My basic idea was to use the installer and set up a minimal new system on a fresh disk, then migrate all of my stuff from the old system.
I have some doubts though
1- is this the easiest way to get the task done?
2- what do I have to copy from the current system /etc? and most importantly, what I should *not* copy?
3- how do I replicate the current package configuration on the new system without falling into a dependency hell?
shed some light on what the behavior would be if I symlinked a non-encrypted directory (lets call it /media/sdcard/foo) into an encrypted home directory (lets say home/documents/sdcard-docs)Would files written to that symlinked directory be encryptedgarbled, or would they be normal? would files that were attempted to be read be interpreted as encrypted, or would they be read properly?
I have a dual-boot macbook with an OS X partition and an ubuntu partition. When I first installed ubuntu, I changed my home folder to my OS X home directory to synchronize all my files from both. My home directory is now /media/sda2/Users/username/. In a regular home folder, the icons for Documents, Music, Pictures, Movies, etc. are different (not just with emblems, but actually different icons). But when I changed my home folder, these subfolders' icons stayed the same as regular folder icons and I can't figure out a way to change that default setting. I know how to change the icons for each folder manually, but these changes don't appear everywhere (i.e. nautilus, places, etc). Furthermore, every time I change my icon theme, I would have to manually reassign icons for these folders. Is there a way to globally change the folder icons for these folders?
This thread was nearly titled "The volume Filesysyem root has only 128 KB free space remaining" then I discovered the cause my Encrypted Private Directory had grown to 20GB eating all the free space on my Ubuntu system partition. Here's what happened:All was well with my system last night, left it downloading 2 GB of files from the internet to an NTFS drive to return to low space errors this morning.I checked and nothing had been downloaded to my Ubuntu partition, and even if it had, it could of handled the 2GB without issue. Did some reading on here and the first step I tried found the problem:

I need to specify a different path to home directories on a particular server than what LDAP contains for the users, besides using a symlink. E.g. "/Users/jdoe" vs "/home/jdoe" I don't want to change the actual LDAP attributes, just want a particular server to point them in the right direction (Ubuntu 10.04).
I'm assuming it's something I could probably set in pam configurations?
After buying an IBM/Lenovo USB fingerprint reader model FP06 and installing Fingerprint GUI, have problems to mount my home folder encrypted with eCyptfs. I was using it since the first time i install Ubuntu 10.10 64 bits. After login from GDM, there are some ways to make it work:
1) open a terminal window and type ecryptfs-mount-private. This decrypt the home folder, but need to logout and login again to my personal preferences can be reached (bookmarks in nautilus, in firefox, etc). Each time the PC is rebooted, the same process is needed to made again.
2) before login in GDM, change to a tty1 terminal (ctrl-alt-F1) and login from here. The personal folder decrypt then without problems. Then change to GDM (ctrl-alt-F, login an everything works fine. What could be the fault from GDM to not mount the encrypted folder?
