I have got Apache2 and the LAMP stack installed okay, along with phpMyAdmin and can give my external IP to anyone with the http:// and anyone can view my website that way but what I want to do is have my IP resolve into a domain name like ooloo-website.net but I don't know how to do this.
Is there any way that I can do this like register my IP to a free DNS and domain website without buying a domain or using one of those free ones like ooloo.webhost.net or do I need to host everything myself like DNS and the domain? Can I even do all of this myself?

View 10 Replies View RelatedIs the term a 'simple SMTP relay' a contradiction in terms?!I have an elderly Dell server on which I have just made a fresh install of 10.04 LTS server. I had 8.04 running on it for a long time, but I haven't tried an SMTP server before. It is a headless server with CLI (no GUI) and the latest version of Webmin installed.I have a basic LAMP server installed for a few websites using PHPbb and Joomla, and also I run a Mediatomb server for our household. When I installed I also chose to install mail services, but these remain masked behind NAT at the moment
I now want to set up an SMTP relay server so when I am working away and using different wifi points or my notoriously unreliable 3G dongle I can always send emails through the home server (from my iPhone and my laptop) rather than having to look up the SMTP server for each ISP of the place where I am working.
What I want is an authenticated server which takes my email and redirects it to my home ISP's SMTP server. I need only 3 authenticated users to have access (myself, my wife and my son). I don't need (or want) any incoming mail services at all.
Useful modules installed are: Dovecot, Postfix, Procmail mail filter, PAM - but how do I set them up?
Is there any simple setup that I could do, preferably through Webmin, but I can handle CLI if necessary?
I have looked at the Ubuntu help pages, but it looks so complicated to set up something that seems like it should be so simple to me.
I am having a time at trying to get a simple FTP setup to my Var/www/html folder for my canned Joomla website. I can log in anon with no write permissions, but it will not log in using any users I have setup on the server. I've googled a bunch, but nothing to correct my 530 authentication failure when I try to log in as one of my user accounts for the server.

View 7 Replies View RelatedHave done a bit of Googling around this but got totally swamped so will try here. Basically we are running a CentOS server which hosts a number of virtual hosts under Apache. Recently I needed to set up a development environment for another site using Ubuntu and have this running and accessible on the LAN from a VMWare image. I'm using bridged networking so the VMWare machine has its own IP on the LAN subnet.
I've set up a DNS to point to the external IP of the physical host but can't figure out how to route traffic requested on this domain to the VMWare host. I've basically tried two approaches (configuring a proxy web server and reverse proxy in an httpd.conf file and mucking around with iptables forwarding rules but without success.
Ideally I'd like somesite.somewhere.com to point to the VMWare IP but I could live with a custom port on the end if thats whats required.
To throw further complication into the mix I need reliable communication between the VMWare machine and external mail relay servers in order to debug any issues with mail bouncebacks, embargos etc.
Any idea what's the easiest way to accomplish this?
My daughter wants to build a little website that looks a bit like a magazine for her family and select friends. Front page has links to stories or articles she'll write. She would also like to post some pictures for people to see and maybe have people add comments if they like. I'd like to host it locally on our home server and limit access with an id and password. I would use something like DYNDNS.com to point family and friends to our server where they could login. I have an Ubuntu Lamp server setup to install what we need.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI can't reach my website via http. I'm not sure but I think I just need to unblock port 80. But I can't find where a firewall has even been installed on my machine. ufw status returns inactive. sudo aptitude search firewall shows nothing installed.
Nslookup mydomain.com returns the correct IP. Pinging works.
But typing in the domain name or IP through the web browser just results in a "Network Timeout...Taking too long to respond."
Wget just hangs looking for MySiteName.com:80
VirtualHost has been set up and apache restarted. Site works fine with the ServerAlias I have assigned in my hosts file.
We have Verizon as our ISP with a dynamic IP address. We published our website but the IP changes frequently. How can we set Network address translator(NAT) so our website can be published regardless of IP changes? We don't have domain name and have no intention for one.

We are setting up a single staging server that will mirror the configurations of these servers as closely as possible. What is the easiest way to ensure the exact same software and configs as the production servers are setup on the new staging server. Our contracted data center provider has already informed us that they do not perform images and NO we do not have physical access to the machines. It is undetermined whether we will be virtualizing the staging server into two virtual servers yet, so for the purposes of this post lets assume we are not. I'm seeking a faster/more precise method than doing this by eye and hand.

There are more examples of the same,around 20 domain have the same problem.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm in the middle of moving my lab to a new server in the middle of the school year.. and need to copy all the user accounts to the new box, hopefully with all the student's passwords and contents of their folders intact.And since we are using the system daily, I need to do it all in an hour or 2.I'm thinking I can just
1. diff /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow from the old the new
2. copy all the student folders to new /home
3. write a script to set the permissions on all the new /home folders to match the user names.
It seems easy and safe so long as I back up the 2 existing files..Any reason not to try? Or is there an easier way?

I compile from source because I usually run ./configure to modify the source before installing. What would be the easiest way to keep the server software updated? I am considering creating custom packages from a server which I would keep up to date manually. Then use Capistrano or Puppet to install those packages on all of my servers.
Issue with the 'host' command that comes with bind-utils package.We don't have any browsing/name resolution issues except to the following two sites:

I have tried to run the "host" command against different DNS caching servers I have access to all produced the same timed out error. I called Aeroplan technical support to report the issue to them and from their perspective, they have no problem accessing the website.And we don't have any problem accessing any websites ourselves if "host" return A record lookup without the timed out error.
1. It's not our firewall filtering out packet. I tried it on external facing server without firewall and got the same result.
2. It's not our DNS caching server cause same errors are observed on our ISP caching server.
3. It works on an altogether network, from a Windows Vista desktop, through IE 8.
