I have just upgraded from ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10. After rebooting my computer i found that the background is now plain black. I have tried changing it in the appearance settings, but no matter what I change is to it stays black.
View 2 RepliesI've installed Fedora 13 from DVD and selected some extra features (php, mySQL). After the installation and user creation, I rebooted and logged in - clean clean desktop. No menu, no panel nothing. But I can run some commands (like firefox) from ALT+F2. It looks as if the commands works fine, but no menu.
I've re-installed my whole system.... same thing after logging in. I can see the bottom panel before log in.
Whatever I should do, I can only through command line as I'm able (from ALT+F2) to open a terminal. I suspect my resolution or something.
I'm working from a Acer laptop who's monitor is broken, connected a Samsung SyncMaster 943nwx to it. Its a 17" wide monitor.
I have installled ubuntu 9.04 and windows XP. After rebooting the system the desktop background image which i saved earlier is not showing up in Ubuntu.

This is apparently a known issue when you're using the wrong java version or something, and I've gotten this crash in the past, but I've always just restarted to get my computer back to normal. However, when I restarted my computer, the monitors would not get any signal from the computer. They just stay black. I tried restarting, shutting down all the way and turning it back on, and nothing works. The computer just stays completely black.
I tried turning on the computer then SSHing into it, but it's not working. I'm not sure if I had it set to auto log in, so it might be that I'm not logged in, or it might be something more insidious, but as I can't see what's happening I don't know what the problem could be.
I installed Ubuntu 32-bit v. 10.10 on a Dell Optiplex GX270, after installation i had to reboot, but then when rebooting it just goes to a black screen with a flashing
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen Ambiance is selected as the theme, the broadcast box in the "Me Menu" is black text on a near black background. Changing the "Input Boxes" color changed the color of that boxes background on every theme except Ambiance. The problem seems to be with having "Controls" set to Ambiance, because having any other theme customized with Ambiance controls selected causes this bug again.
I really don't want to use any of the other themes because I find them horrid in comparison. how to fix this bug, or if someone would be kind enough to post a proper bug report for this? Can anyone else recreate this error on theirs?
I have installed virtualbox because i wanted to run .exe files for my job. After installation and configuration it asked me to reboot. From that moment when reboots it returns the full symbol of fedora and then the screen becomes black with white letters. I couldn't login ever again. I am new in Fedora, i don't have a backup of my files and i cant't work. I think that this could be a command line or something like this. Is there any possibility to login even once to copy my files to another disk and then to setup Fedora again?

I was configuring the vnc server or remote desktop using the "gconf-editor" -- "desktop - gnome - remote_access" pane, and first I clicked on "disable background" to see if it was usefull or not to disable it (in terms of speed). It worked fine but sometimes when closing the connection, the background refuses to reenable, mantaining the black background...
That's ok, I decided to disable the feature and share via vnc the background as it is a wired net and I do not really need this feature.
My surprise is that now, whith the feature DISABLE (box unchecked), I cannot set a background, it is always black and I find no way to go back in this...
is this common, or something that can be "easily" fixed?
Can't quite figure this out. My GDM is showing up with no theme whatsoever. It has a completely black background, boxy buttons, and ugly fonts. I can change it by going to tty1 and using

I have the latest version of ubuntu, my problem is my desktop background is black, when I shut the PC down the desktop background (the picture set as my background) flashes up, (the picture will change when I change the background). Looks like the black desktop background is hiding it. Also when opening emails with attachments the attachment opens then gets covered with the black background.

View 4 Replies View RelatedA rookie Ubuntu user, I foolishly downloaded iTunes and ever since that install (which has since been undone), my folder system shows a black background. The only way to see the files is to click and drag my mouse over the files in the system. Is there a way to fix this? I've attached a screenshot for clarity.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just installed xubuntu natty, and the gdm theme (xubuntu-gdm-theme) has somehow reverted to something ugly. The background is black instead of showing xubuntu-greybird.png, the panel bar is light gray, and the shutdown button is now gray instead of a red/orange power icon.
The problem appeared while I was tweaking my account settings, possibly when I used the users-admin tool, but I'm not sure.
I tried purging and reinstalling the following packages:
gdm
xubuntu-gdm-theme
xubuntu-artwork
xubuntu-default-settings
xubuntu-desktop
...but that didn't help.
For comparison, I'm attaching screen shots of my (broken) gdm screen and a correct one from a virtual machine. (Try to ignore the fact that they're different screen resolutions.)
I've been running KDE4 with Suse 11.2 for about a year or so now, with no problems. Yesterday, the background to my screen suddenly went black. Open windows were unaffected, but I could see my theme, the task manager, etc. I couldn't open any programs other than the ones already open (and ones that they launch).This problem was system-wide, in that it affects all accounts on my machine.I thought I'd solved the problem after discussion with someone by email, by forcing KDE to recreate itself. I did this by
mv ~/.kde4 ~/oldkde4
then relogging. This, in itself, seemed to make matters worse, so I went
mv ~/.kde4 ~/newkde4
mv ~/oldkde4 ~/.kde4
and relogged. To my surprise, everything worked thereafter for a few hours.
I think this was coincidence, because, after a few hours, the same thing happened and the "fix" didn't work anymore.I checked .xsession-error and it says

Whenever I use code completion in Eclipse for a function, the function's PHP help/docs cannot be seen because it has a black background. How can I change this? I'm using Ubuntu 10 64 bit, default theme. Default eclipse theme. I've tried changing all the black colors in the Eclipse preferences under both Appearance and the other colors area to no success.
This is very annoying, as I cannot view help for any PHP functions without using my web browser.
I do need to change or edit this white Ubuntu logo on the black background that comes right after GRUB and before my xsplash is played. How do I do that? Where is that picture saved in the system?
I have edited my xsplash the way I want it by changing the pictures in /usr/share/image/xsplash but cant find a way to edit this other bootup screen.
i have installed Ubuntu 10.10 and played around a bit and have got it booting into cli instead of the login screen. gnome is my default desktop environment but i wish to run kde along side to play around with. When i boot into kde using startx kde (usualy just using startx) all i get is a mouse, black background and a terminal screen.

I can configure my software's appearance? Well, for the KDM theme, the Grub Bootsplash, i can download themes people so generously create. I however, desire the BOOTSPLASH. or whatever it is, of openSUSE 11.1. the green with white veins in the background, and a strip of black running horizontally across, with "openSUSE" written on it in white. i mean the one that masks the initial Text interface, the FIRST GUI you see after GRUB. The one that also shows when you power down. Is this a plausible endevour? I do have my 11.1 iso, in case it's stored as a theme in there.

View 2 Replies View RelatedWith the gpg command I used to encrypt files so they saved as plain text (the encrypted files were viewable in a plain text editor though were a encrypted nightmare)
I just forget the option in the gpg command to do this and I can't find it in a hurry either in the man file
I used synaptic package manager and downloaded E16 (enlightenment)
Then I found out I couldn't get back into gnome without it. It puts its little windows in gnome EVEN when I select session "GNOME" without the -E16 tagged on.
I tried to remove it but that removes all the window borders title and minimize, close, maximize buttons(When I log out and back in)
Then I tried restarting would not boot back into ubuntu until I reinstall E16 in a new created account in root. Its got me trapped and I really do not want to reinstall..
Does anyone know of a application that will use plain text, but allows the customizatino of width and lenth of the number of characters?
Looking to set my footprint to be 78 characters wide (by) 59 characters high.
How do I do it? I only installed the packages from ubuntu and not the whole thing from the cd.

In spite of how the root, swap and home are volumes in an LVM2 group on top of a fully-encrypted harddisk, it's quite swift this computer isn't for me, however; it's for my old man. It's been my pet project for the past few weeks, as an exercise in making Linux both highly secure and user-friendly, so that even a technophobe like him could use it without fear of identity theft if it ever gets lost or stolen. I recently shipped it off to him...
The weakest part of security, however, I fear may be the screensaver, which is why I ask. I've searched and searched and cannot manage to find any information on security hardening practices (apart from banal advice such as "always choose a secure password" and "never log in to an X-session as root"). What I want to know is, just how safe is a locked screen? Also...is it technically possible with the right tools to get a core dump of a running computer and thus extract the block device encryption key from memory? I know that your run-of-the-mill thief will just try hitting the power button and throwing in a livedisk, but hey, you never know. Edit: found.
