So I have a via board with an onboard Via82xx sound card. the front ports work, and the rear ports don't. There is no slider in sound properties, or in alsamixer launched from terminal, for "headphones"; only a "master output.
How do I get the rear sound i/o ports to work (or even show up... uh, somewhere)?
I'm at the tail end of my upgrade from Lenny to Squeeze and I think this sound issue is the last one I have.
As usual I've tried hunting for some answers but it gets very confusing when people are using KDE or PulseAudio or Ubuntu or slightly different configuration to what I have.
My config:
Debian Squeeze 2.6.32
Alsa (just because I was using that in Lenny and it was working, no other reason)
Gnome
Rhythmbox
Skype
Skype is pretty good - it has the sound configuration built in, so I say ring the speakers and it does. I say talk to the headset and it does. Rhythmbox is my music player (again just because I was using it under Lenny) however it only wants to play through the headset. I can't seem to get it to play to the speakers attached to the rear port.

I would like wireless rear speakers without breaking the bank. Creative's Sound Blaster Wireless Transmitter seems to be the ticket. I would like to get pulse audio to blast the rear left and right channels through the sound blaster usb card and the other channels through the AC97 card built into my mobo (I think its ac97, anyway it works right now). I would like a real 5 channel experience using two different sound cards. If there is delay, can I adjust for it?

I've look at Alsa Mixer. There are two tabs (IDT ID 76c7 and ATI R6xx HDMI). I turned the second one off, since I don't have any HDMI sound output device connected to the computer. On the other tab, there are five sliders (Master, PCM, Front Mi, Line and Mic). They are all turned on, and the first two are at maximum volume.
It seems to me that Ubuntu is not recognizing whatever controls the rear speaker jack.
I have an onboard Realtek HD soundcard which I have 2 2.1 sound systems hooked into. The rear two speakers play audio simultaneously i.e running the terminal sound test "front left" and "front right" come out of both the rear speakers at the same time. I am running Ubuntu Natty Narwhal 11.04 with all of the latest updates. May be unrelated, but also there seems to be a very large amount of lag when playing system sounds. Takes a few seconds after the event has occurred for the associated sound to play.

With XP on that box I get sound on both the front and the rear connectors. Under XP I see the dialog as attached to this post. It even knows where I have something plugged in. Under CentOS I have two devices listed:0: HDA Intel (Alsa Mixer) 1: IDT ID 76c1 (OSS Mixer) The second one is marked active (*).Any idea on how to make the sound work for the rear connector too ?

I know that it's not a hardware/cable problem because this exact setup works fine under windows (even though there i'm working with a hacked video driver setup since one doesn't exist for any of the "modern" versions of windows, ati radeon 7500 (mobile))
I am trying to output all of my sound through the s/pdif output on my motherboard. It works fine in Windows 7, I just had to go under the sound properties and switch from the analog to the s/pdif. When I try to do the same in Ubuntu, theres nothing listed. Only "internal audio analog stereo" and "HDMI Audio" (from my graphics card) display under the output choices in Sound Preferences. Under hardware only the HDMI and Internal Analog show up as well. I tried looking at the Gnome-Alsa mixer but nothing in there either.
View 2 Replies View RelatedJust fitted an Inno3D (I-7300LE-G4E3) graphics card and I get a distorted boot up screen, a virtually unreadble boot menu (lots of extra white bits all over the screen) and when the system is booting the black screen with "booting from .." and the underscore at the end, is covered with white commas (?!), then the login screen pops up for a fraction of a second, then get a blank screen and no signal-cant get anything after this (or from the vga port on the pc)-I ve tried logging in even though I cant see anything, but no music , nothing.
Thought I might have to download drievers AFTER I d installed it, but as I had this problem, I removed it and tried to download driers before installation. Not sure which of the 4 to try, but tried 2 and neither works-GDebi is offered as an app to open them but nothing happens, nothing happens if I just click on them and when I try and install them from a terminal with the script from the nVidia site, it says unable to open them.
Mainboard is a Gigabyte GA-790FXTA-UD5, Audio Chip is shown by alsamixer as HDA-Intel - HDA ATI SB, Realtek ALC889. Analog Audio is working fine. Now i tried to use the digital output. And it did not work. AVR and cable are working fine. Software is Ubuntu 11.04.

I'm trying to get sound from Ubuntu 10.04 out thru the integrated realtek alc850 chipset to my home theatre via the spdif port. I installed the drivers from realtek but still no sound. Under Places-Preferences-Sound, only the IEC958 shows up. What else should I do? Neither Rhythmbox nor Alsa show the Realtec spdif.
View 1 Replies View Relatedi recently installed Ubuntu and the USB soundcard worked just fine, but when i changed the "Connector" in Sound Preferences (Output tab) the output stopped working (= no sound). Input still works. Sound did not come back even when i changed the Connector setting back (I hear no sound when its set to Analog Output as well as Analog Headphones, which are the only 2 setting).

I can get audio output on the analog channels but what I'd really like is output on the SPDIF (optical, digital) channel so that I can have better sound quality on my home theater system. What I've tried...-I followed the sound troubleshooting guide.-I tried the 6 stack/3 stack approach suggested on the ALSA website.-Tried compiling and installing the latest version of alsa.-Tried installing the development drivers for alsa that are put out by the ubuntu community.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been having problems with my hdmi output not working since I first installed debian on my laptop(probably 2 years now). The reason the output wasn't working is because I can't turn my onboard graphics off in my bios. So I had a bright idea, why don't I just blacklist the i915 driver?
So I did, I updated the initramfs and restarted my computer. It started up showed the startup sequence on my laptop screen, my dell monitor (vga output) and on the tv (hdmi output) but then the start up sequence froze on the hdmi output while the other 2 screens continued to work. I do lspci -v and the i915 driver still shows up for the vga controller.
I don't have the nvidia drivers setup and I don't have an xorg.conf setup at the moment because I get the no screens error when I do. What should I do?

I've recently noticed that my IEC958 digital audio output has stopped working. The short version of why I didn't notice this immediately is that I have two simultaneous audio outputs from my system to my speakers and I hadn't realized the IEC958 output wasn't in use.After messing around with a few settings to no avail, I remembered that I'd recently run update manager (this had to be within the last two weeks) and thought this might be the cause.I have just booted to a 10.10 install disc and verified the IEC958 output works fine there.
Unfortunately I'm not sure which of the recent updates could have caused this problem. my cousin recently brought me an old dell to see if I could get it working.he mainly wants to use this machine to record himself playing guitar.I immediately tried installing ubuntu, but found it to be unbearably slow.the computer is on the verge of being an antique at 1ghz and 256mb of ram.so I started looking for alternatives, and decided to give debian a shot since I'm familiar with ubuntu and know that it is based on debian.I installed Debian Lenny from the netinst ISO and find it to be much quicker booting and loading programs than ubuntu.I will most likely put debian on my desktop when I'm finished getting this poor old dell set up.
I'm unable to get sound output working properly.I have checked that the volume is not muted. while using pidgin, after sending a message the "message sent" sound starts "skipping" like a scratched cd and the only way to get it to stop is to close the progam completely. I am unable to hear sound or watch videos with totem (and most likely other players, but I have not tested any yet).the files load audio files show their tag information and the length of the track and videos load the first frame but the file never actually plays. when I try to record with Sound Recorder, the application locks up.when I try to record with Audacity the software doesn't stop responding, but also doesn't record.I tried un-muting the microphone (monitor) to check that the microphone I have still works, and can hear it over the speakers, so this leads me to believe that my hardware is in good working order, but that I have something configured improperly.
After many fruitless weeks of reading forums, newsgroups etc, I still fial to get digital output working my SoundBlaster Live Platinum. Ordinary PCM output is passed to the digital receiver witout a problem, but as soon as I try AC3 or DTS it's all silence. I have unmuted the IEC958 channel in alsamixer and added gain to them. I am having a java program which will read characters from console. i have started my program from bash shell and now the program starts and waiting for the inputs. Say I have typed text , "hello". If i try to move the cursor position back wards using the left arrow button it was not working. Instead some junk characters are printed on the console like ^[[C .

The Green jack for audio of the sound card is dead. The other jacks [Blue and Pink] are not working for audio. I have them working as audio outputs in windows xp-using the Realtek interface.How can I do the same in Ubuntu?

So here's the situation. He plugs his audio jack into his computer and then into the speakers but it still plays from the computer speakers.
I have dual monitors. I'm running Gnome and Ubuntu 10.04. I read that using the Compiz "put to next output" keyboard command allows you to assign a keyboard shortcut to moving a window from one monitor to the next monitor.
Although the keyboard shortcuts work for moving the window around within ONE monitor, they don't do anything when it comes to moving the window from one monitor to the next, using the "put to next output" command under Compiz : Window Management : Put. I'm happy to try a different solution, if the Compiz keyboard shortcut just isn't in the cards.
I finally got audio working on my ubuntu 9.10 desktop... now I am having sound issues watching movies from a network share.The sound device continually randomly changes to "dummy output device" and then there is no sound output. The sound icon dissapears on the toolbar. To get it back and audio to start working I have to $sudo alsa force-reloadIt seems to happen everytime there is a network delay, the movie will stop for a second and then when it plays the sound is gone
