Ubuntu 11.04. I would like to move the Applications Icon, the one that launches a window where I can view and launch all my applications. I want to move it up near the top of the Launcher Bar, where it would be more readily accessed. I've tried "clicking and dragging but the only thing I can do is switch places with the "Files & Folders" Icon.
View 5 RepliesI am running Kubuntu 10.04 and i want to make some icons on the desktop to launch various telnet sessions. So i make a .sh using vi test.sh and then put in telnet 180.9.x.xx and save and quit. Then i chmod 777 it to make it executable and then moved it to my Desktop folder. But when i double click or right click and open with konsole nothing happens. I know it is probably something stupid which i have overlooked but when i have done this in Ubuntu in the past it has worked.
View 7 Replies View RelatedAs the subject of this post suggests i'm trying to launch Ubuntu applications from a php script, i have tried different ways of doing this but without much success.Firstly i would like to explain why and maybe somebody may have a better suggestion or an alternative route...I am making a 'personal' remix of Ubuntu which will be a live CD i can use for my university work (studying computer forensics), it will basically be a minimal install with every Linux based forensics application i can lay my hands on,instead of having a huge list of shortcut's in the menu's that ship with Ubuntu I though it would be fun/a challenge to make a fancy PHP based web site which contained a database of the programs so i could search through them and find what i need by category ect and then launch those applications from the same site.I can 'talk' to Ubuntu through some small scripts i've tried but i can't launch any applications.Here is what i've got so far....

I recently installed stacks for Docky using the script of this link here [URL]
Until that, everything is okay. I can drag and drop folders to Docky, and when I click 'em I can easily see it's content like in Mac OS or Cairo.
But the problem here is that I wanted to make an Application folder like in Mac OS X. I made a folder that I called aplications and there I put all the applications I have installed.
But, when I try to open an app from the Docky, it just opens gedit with info about the app I'm trying to open. Is it related that all the application's names are .desktop files? Is that an executable?

I tried to launch java files (.jar) by choosing a program Openjdk Java 6 runtime. Then it gives me an error that the file is not marked as executable. I know how to solve problem with wine by making a launcher with a command and path

I updated everything, prior to starting the upgrade.Everything upgraded fine, however some applications simply wont launch.For instance, if i launch Ubuntu Tweak from the main menu through Applications>System Tools> Ubuntu Tweak, i get the ubuntu tweak splash, but then nothing after that.If i type "ubuntu-tweak" in terminal i get:Quote:

I recently acquired an android device and would like to be able to ssh into my machine and launch certain X applications ( Amarok, other video players)
This works well when I launch server tasks that don't require an interface, however when trying to launch Amarok on the host from a remote session, I get an error about DBUS and display obviously. Just to clarify, I do not want them to launch on the phone itself but on the host, If I start them manually while at the host II can then control them remotely fine once they are started. . .
After upgrading to Natty from Maverick I started playing with the Compiz settings (trying to get my cube back), causing the Launcher to vanish!
This means I can't launch any applications - is there an easy way to restore it?
I have installed Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal. I'm using the Gnome desktop (Ubuntu Classic) instead of Unity.
My problems is, when I launch certain applications, most of the time LibreOffice ones, Ubuntu desktop freezes.
When this happens the desktop becomes unresponsive to the keyboard. However the mouse pointer can still be moved around. Everything on the screen will freeze including panels and their items.
This happens only when an application launches.
I have already set up a shortcut key combination so that Ctrl + Alt + Backspace will perform a session restart. But when the above mentioned problem occurs, shortcut keys do not work (so I can't just do a session restart). So there's nothing to do other than restarting the laptop by holding the power button down.

View 4 Replies View RelatedIn these days I was doing some experiments: creating rpms of different programs by compiling directly the source code. Everything went well, every-time I was able to create a rpm and install it correctly, no errors no issues. Unfortunately I was not able to find the way to create in the menu (application tab) any quick launch icon. I was forced always to use the terminal and digit the correspondent command :wxmaxima,gnuplot, etc. I tried to look in the manuals but there wasn't anything useful.
By the way I am using Opensuse 11.3 and KDE 4.4.4.
I downloaded emacs, but when I run it in terminal, it does not open the gui - it opens emacs in the terminal and I do not want that. Also, kate just doesn't launch and a bunch of error appears. What do I need to do to launch the applications on GUI by default?

But after the next boot I understood that some applications won't launch. Skype, last.fm player, VirtualBox - all the qt ones. I've reinstalled those apps, and reinstalled qt. View 2 Replies View RelatedI wanted to have some cool effects in my desktop and have just installed compiz fusion in fedora 11 (kde) but when i launch compiz fusion icon the screen just goes white and nothing appears.
My laptop is dell xps m1330.
Wondering if any one else is having this problem lately under 11.4. My Skype does not want to launch any more. When I click to open Skype, the tray icon will pop up for 1 second and then just disappear. Have tried launching from command line to see if there are any messages, but it just says aborted when you try launch it.
I noticed this started happening randomly when I had the laptop in hibernate and then would resume, Skype would then just disappear and then I would just relaunch it and it would be find again.
I've just installed Ubuntu and noticed that there are two tool bars.The one at the top says applications, places, system and then there is also one at the bottom.Is it possible to have just a single toolbar that has a "start button", "quick launch icons" and open applications?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm having an issue with my AWN dock where I have enabled it to'group similarapplications', i.e multiple windows of the the same applicationIn 9.10, AWN distinguished between different WINE applications and used their native icons.In 10.04 AWN doesn't distinguish, see the pic belowScreenshot-2.jpgs you can see AWN groups my WINE applications under one icon, the spotify icon and you can see the MS Word logo to the right. This is very irritating since I would like to have separate WINE shortcuts on my taskbar! I'm sure this will affect some other users too.Anyone know how to sort this out?N.B I can't use cairodock as I have issues with freezing and icons not appearing, and i feel docky isn't up to speed with the same functionality as the others for the time being.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running Lucid Lynx 10.04 x64 here and the following issues:
1. How do I change the icon text for applications?
2. I can't seem to burn DVDs successfully (CDs burn ok though). I've tried burning with K3b, Nero and Brasero - all fail to produce a readable DVD. My burner seems to produce readable DVDs when running WinXP with Nero though.
I'd imagine I sound like a complete clown but I am completely new to ubunto and linux in general. Having "fiddled around with it" for a matter of weeks I am finding generally I am quite pleased and am taking my time sorting through the chaff. Talking of chaff I have a problem from downloading a program previously which turned out to be unnecessary. Avast, I have removed the program and associated files but for some reason an Icon remains in the applications box at the bottom, not in a grouped file. I have tried various terminal commands taken from forums etc but none of these appear to have done the trick. A simple right click doesnt give me a remove to waste basket option and the drag and drop to waste basket doesn't work either. Amongst terminal efforts force remove etc etc., don't have any affect and the lines about the avast file does not exist.
