General :: Log A User In A Remote Computer Using Ssh?
Jun 9, 2010I want to connect to a server via ssh and log in (remotely) a user in X11 (gdm).A little context: I need to install a wine application in 30 computers, but wine require X11, there is nobody loged there, so wine does not work properly. I want to remotely login in display=:0.0 a user so this user receive the window (it only start and close), there i need to ()neThere is no one logged on there. I need to start a graphical app there (wine installer) but I cannot because it needs a display with X11 (to open a wineconsole).
Resumen: Is it posible to log a user remotely on X11 My config: every computer have fedora 10 and gnome. Clarification: I do not want to do X-forwarding, I want to show the window on the remote computer, not mine. I want to log the user on the remote computer. If I go (fisicali) to the computer, the user should be logged on.
Update: I asked to gdm developers, but I had no answers... I'm starting to think there is no way. The only option I can think is to config autologin, restart gdm, and get the config normal again (all by script) But I have to read a lot for that and is not so important, I prefer to log in manualy 30 times.

Aug 11, 2010As the subject of this post suggests i'm trying to launch Ubuntu applications from a php script, i have tried different ways of doing this but without much success.Firstly i would like to explain why and maybe somebody may have a better suggestion or an alternative route...I am making a 'personal' remix of Ubuntu which will be a live CD i can use for my university work (studying computer forensics), it will basically be a minimal install with every Linux based forensics application i can lay my hands on,instead of having a huge list of shortcut's in the menu's that ship with Ubuntu I though it would be fun/a challenge to make a fancy PHP based web site which contained a database of the programs so i could search through them and find what i need by category ect and then launch those applications from the same site.I can 'talk' to Ubuntu through some small scripts i've tried but i can't launch any applications.Here is what i've got so far....

Ubuntu :: Can't Launch Applications From Docky
Nov 1, 2010I recently installed stacks for Docky using the script of this link here [URL]
Until that, everything is okay. I can drag and drop folders to Docky, and when I click 'em I can easily see it's content like in Mac OS or Cairo.
But the problem here is that I wanted to make an Application folder like in Mac OS X. I made a folder that I called aplications and there I put all the applications I have installed.
But, when I try to open an app from the Docky, it just opens gedit with info about the app I'm trying to open. Is it related that all the application's names are .desktop files? Is that an executable?

Jul 5, 2011The tutorial (UNIX Tutorial) does not say anything about the license from a remote computer, I want to be able to save files in these folders of mine, but can not access from a remote computer. Normally the command would win R (Windows key and R) give me a sign up picture, it comes up but I can not access. The message that comes up is that the network path is not available.

But after the next boot I understood that some applications won't launch. Skype, last.fm player, VirtualBox - all the qt ones. I've reinstalled those apps, and reinstalled qt. May 11, 2010I recently acquired an android device and would like to be able to ssh into my machine and launch certain X applications ( Amarok, other video players)
This works well when I launch server tasks that don't require an interface, however when trying to launch Amarok on the host from a remote session, I get an error about DBUS and display obviously. Just to clarify, I do not want them to launch on the phone itself but on the host, If I start them manually while at the host II can then control them remotely fine once they are started. . .

May 26, 2011I have installed Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal. I'm using the Gnome desktop (Ubuntu Classic) instead of Unity.
My problems is, when I launch certain applications, most of the time LibreOffice ones, Ubuntu desktop freezes.
When this happens the desktop becomes unresponsive to the keyboard. However the mouse pointer can still be moved around. Everything on the screen will freeze including panels and their items.
This happens only when an application launches.
I have already set up a shortcut key combination so that Ctrl + Alt + Backspace will perform a session restart. But when the above mentioned problem occurs, shortcut keys do not work (so I can't just do a session restart). So there's nothing to do other than restarting the laptop by holding the power button down.

Mar 5, 2010Desktop computer (AMD64) running F12. Nothing unusual about it, stock install. Thinkpad laptop running Windows XP. Putty is installed, I can SSH to Fedora.
If I'm at the laptop, in a Putty session, how can I (for example) type "firefox" and have the resultant Firefox window appear on-the-laptop?
I generally have X running all the time on the desktop because I can't get the wireless network connection to function without NetworkManger (not that I really care because I'm rarely at a console screen and need net access).

In the same room I have a second computer that I use purely for trialing Linux distributions, It currently has Debian, gNewSense and Kubuntu on it with Grub to choose between. This computer has no keyboard / mouse / monitor, but it has directly wired ethernet to the home network. Is there any way I can set it to be remotely controlled from before / during grub so I can choose from the other computer which to run? I realise I can just crawl behind the desk and unplug the keyboard / mouse / monitor, but I don't particularly want to every time I reboot into a different distro. I also realise that remote access during boot is a security risk so is there a way of allowing only one MAC address to do the controlling?

However what I want to do is get the server working so that I can remote connect to users. When I do connect instead of the active session all I get is a grey screen with an xterm window. I've done a lot of searching for this, but cannot seem to find a good answer. What I'd like to do is connect to the native X session. I've tried changing things in the xstartup file to things such as "-display :0" but it still doesn't work.

Oct 2, 2010I upgraded my Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy) system to 10.04 (Lucid) and my remote X applications no longer work. The problem seems to pertain to Xauthority. When the remote X client attempts to access the X server on Lucid it receives an error indicating that there is no matching MIT Magic Cookie (hereafter cookie) for the display. It turns out that this is true. I'm of the belief that the subject cookie should be generated for my display when the X session is started on Lucid.I thought this was being done by GDM when I logged on. However, $HOME/.Xauthority contains only 1 cookie which is for the display identified as "Pluto/Unix:0" (Pluto is the name of the host). I'm expecting a cookie for a display identified as "Pluto.my.test:0" where "my.test" is the domain name for my network.

Jul 29, 2009I'm new here and hope to profit from your immense linux knowledge and of course to share my own experience where I can.
I'm in a student organization and we use a file server that runs linux. I can log in through ssh and copy using scp using login and password (no rsa/dsa keys because most users are windows users using winSCP and they're lacking in computer knowledge so we don't require them to mess around with keys)
However, I don't have network access everywhere, so I'd like to make a copy on my laptop harddisk of some of the folders I use most frequently. Note that I don't need it to copy files from my pc back to the remote server so I don't need two-way sync. Deleting the local copy every time and downloading a new full copy is not an option as we are talking about several gigabytes and the download speed is limited. Normally I would use Unison, however, this requires unison to be installed on both pc's and I can't install any software on the file server so this is not an option.
Any ideas on how to achieve this? I'm reasonable knowledgable about linux so I don't mind tinkering with some config files and using command line applications.
