Ubuntu :: 11.04 Does Not Start Properly After Clean Install
May 13, 2011
Just did a clean 11.04 install, however, Ubuntu doesn't start properly, it usually stops when it gets to the purple screen, the screen with the word Ubuntu and a few red dots underneath it to show it is loading. The system usually stops there or stops before getting to that screen. I was able to start in the 'safe mode' though.

I have recently done clean installs of 11.4 on two computers and then done clean re-installs but still have the same problem. Each time, the install was without flaw and I could download the updates, when offered, in the install process. At the end of the install I can log into KDE and everything works. However, after shutting down, on reboot, I only get a command line login. I can either login and run startx or use su and do init 3 followed by init 5. This tells me I am getting to runlevel 5 but X isn't starting. Either of those approaches gives me the KDE login. However, after that I have to manually start the network in YAST. I also think I had had to restart CUPS but I have only got as far as installing a printer once so I can't be absolutely sure that happened. As I indicate, this is fully reproducible. Anyone give me a clue as to what is going on?

videos videos work great, but unfortunately, when i try to access videos on hulu.com, i receive this error message: "we're sorry but we're unable stream this video to your system. this may be due to an adobe software limitation on 64-bit linux systems."
this is strange because hulu videos were working after i installed lynx but mysteriously stopped working. i don't have the swfdec-mozilla package installed nor the mozilla-plugin-gnash nor the flashplugin-installer.
what do i need to do to start clean and install the necessary packages?

I have an user space application that performs file I/O operations, when a SIGKILL is captured, some routines are done first to ensure that all I/O operations are completed before rebooting the application or system. My question is, this won't work if the power button is pressed or the power supply is disconnected, so there can be incomplete I/O operation or corrupted data written into the file, so is there a way to prevent data corruption or at least complete any ongoing operation when this scenario happens? Assuming there is at most 1 second before the power really went out, can I/O be still completed?' I'm running the application on a busybox 2.6.14 kernel on an embedded system board.

I had put in a broadcom 4318 (airforce) card and it showed up in network tools as wlan6 with multicast disabled, inactive, and etc. the bf cutter tool also showed up in hardware drivers.
However, after trying to get the card functional - it no longer shows up in network tools nor is bf cutter in the hardware section.
I tried installing broadcom's proprietary driver among some other solutions. I'm running karmic 9.10.
How to start with a clean slate and get my wlan6 to appear again, so I can install this proprietary driver or use driverloader?

I need to wipe the slate clean on my computer and start from scratch. I have too many issues and school is just around the corner for me, I've got a huge workload and don't have time to find solutions to my problems right now. I recently upgraded to Lucid but that only escalated my woes. The simple fact is my machine is getting too old and it's time to upgrade everything, which won't happen until fall. So for now I simply want to downgrade to hardy because it will be supported until April next year and it is very stable, plus I think it is the release that my graphics card got a decent resolution on (ATI, need I say more?). I'm somewhat of a noob, but I've got my wits about me and have researched the forums for many hours to find solutions, but to no avail. I don't want to go into details about what issues I'm having, I just need to know how to remove ALL kernels off of Grub and start from scratch. Any links to comprehensive tutorials would be ideal, or if someone knows of anything else that will work,
P.S. I love Ubuntu and am a lifer. The philosophy behind it as well as the community are supreme and will someday rule the universe,

I have been running a web server from my fedora box for ~ 2 years now, though I have done terrible things to it by way of configuration settings. It seemingly works fine now, but i suspect that I have done some things in an innapropriate way. I would like to remove all of my current settings and web accessable info, and start fresh. What is the cleanest way to set my server's configuration files back to basics (not conserned about system settings related to firewalls).

I accidentally deleted my bin just after booting up when the bin application failed to start properly. I can still send items to trash (right clicking and select from drop down menu) but I cannot restore them, see the bin icon or drag items to the bin area. It is quite annoying and I would be very grateful for comprehensive instructions on how to restore the bin to full operational functionality.

Yesterday, I tried to get two monitors working by editing xorg.conf. When it failed, I tried using my old xorg.conf, but that didn't work either. dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg did not work (it literally did nothing). Uninstalling and re-installing xserver-xorg did not work.So now I have zero working monitors instead of two. Xorg.0.log says something about "Screen was found, but doesn't work with existing setup." Anyway, I am less concern with the specific problem I am having than with the general way to fix problems with X. I read somewhere that dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg doesn't work anymore, but I haven't figured out what I'm supposed to use in place of it when X won't start.

I have a 400mHz clear blue iMac here that I recieved from a friend. It was being used by an art center to display one letter as part of a sign. For some stupid reason, they put Debian on there for that. Whatever.I wanted to put some type of linux on it (not sure yet what kind) but since the Ubuntu Forums are awesome, I figured I'd use this resource instead of signing up for something new.
When I plug in the iMac and press the power button, it lights up with a green LED. Next, I hear the CRT screen power up. (with that nice satisfying crackle) followed by a loud, "Boop!" I do not see the screen light up, nor does it react to a keyboard, mouse, or monitor hooked up with the VGA on the back. It takes CDs in (which I found out) but does not give them back. (so rude.)

I just installed GroupWise 8.0.2 and I want to use it as a pop (and if possible) exchange client. It's been a while but I remember that if you don't want to use a GroupWise server you just needed to select 'Caching Mailbox Path' and give it an existing path. If I do that now it just keeps asking for the hostname of the GroupWise server.
Is this a bug or is this feature disabled?
I am running OpenSUSE 11.3 64-bit gnome

I'm trying to install ubuntu-10.04-server-i386 in Virtualbox on Windows XP Home (for use as a Drupal development server) using the instructions here [URL]... the Ubuntu server will not start properly. Instead it goes to an initramfs prompt as follows
[code]...
Another thread suggested typing 'exit' after a while but it just repeats the same output. It seems the root disk doesn't exist. I allowed the installer to set up partitions to its own recommendation (Guided?) although I'm not entirely sure what it did - I think there are two partitions but you guys will know that. The host disk is SATA. The CPU is a dualcore but I've only enabled one CPU on the guest within Virtualbox. Also, I had to enable PAE mode as without it Virtualbox crashed every time I started the guest. PAE wasn't mentioned in the instructions mentioned above. I've tried changing the various other disk parameters in Virtualbox (without fully understanding them) but no luck. I also ran run the boot info script from a desktop LiveCD and the results are given below.

10.04, clean installs, running Gnome or LXDE.
IF
- a logged-on user wasn't properly logged off
- the system is restarted
- the same user attempts to log in
[Code].....
This seems repeatable, and happened on 2 different PCs.
When logged into Gnome as another user and trying to sudo a backup of the borked user's home before attempting a repair, a ".gvfs" file is reported "in use" and can't be copied.
It happened to me quite a few times, due to crash or more often power failure, or my sudo-errors. I now keep a few spare virgin sudo-enabled cloned accounts just in case one dies that way.

I just upgraded my laptop from fedora 10 to 12, in spite of all kinds of hassles I am nearly able to use the system. Except I noticed that whenever I connect to the ethernet via NetworkManager, both of firefox(3.5.6) and thunderbird(3.0) won't start a window and there is no error output. The programs just hang there so that I have to kill them explicitly. The strange thing is that if I just disconnect the network then they can start up without problem. I can then reconnect to the network and both of them work fine.

I have a Debian testing box with Xfce (no Gnome, no Nautilus). It has all gvfs-related stuff installed, including all backends and fuse interface. But any attempts to gvfs-mount anything (like sftp://... or smb://...) fail with error opening file: Operation not supported, and gigolo shows only 'unix device (file)' in the list of supported protocols. My ~/.gvfs has rwx permissions, and I'm a member of fuse group; other fuse-related stuff works for me.

I am having problems with my newly upgraded 9.10 distribution that keeps locking up. I had started a thread on that but along the way, I noticed another problem with the Update manager. I posted the following text in the same thread but realized that I must start a newer thread since it has its own issues (so sorry if you see this text in my other thread).I had upgraded from 8.10 to 9.04 with ISO image and then to 9.10 with ISO image. In between, I did not reset anything in the Update manager (the upgrades were within one day of each other). Since the computer was connected to network during upgrades, I also let it fetch any newer packages as it needed them.
After the upgrade, I started having system lock ups and it requires hard boot. I tried to check for any updates using Update Manager. It reported that system was up-to-date. However, I noticed in the Settings that cdrom was selected in Sources (perhaps because I had upgraded with ISO image). I unselected the cdrom and tried to update the packages. Since I upgraded using ISO image, there is some problem here about recognizing the repository perhaps. Do you think my problem may have stemmed from upgrading twice using ISO images and not resetting the Update Manager in some fashion in between? Although the system did fetch upgraded packages during upgrades. How can I reset the update manager to start updating properly? Perhaps Authentication is an issue?Of course, I am still having trouble with lock up.

How to get compiz to auto-start. What seems to be the generally accepted method (from what a few google searches and the debian wiki tell me) of using gconf-editor and changing the window manager from 'gnome-wm' to 'compiz' in desktop > gnome > session > required_components doesn't change anything. The only method I found that did not involve using a terminal and running 'compiz --replace' every time I boot the computer was to add compiz and fusion-icon to the gnome startup apps, but this causes unwanted flickering (it starts metacity and then replaces it with compiz, ie it's simply automating what I would do with the terminal). Autostarting the fusion-icon alone does not start compiz, although it allows me to start it from it's menu if I right click the icon. Note that I sometimes use fluxbox as well, so starting it on boot isn't really an option either.
Perhaps this can be useful :
compiz:
Installed: 0.8.4-4
Candidate: 0.8.4-4
gnome-session:
Installed: 2.30.2-3
Candidate: 2.30.2-3

There are several posts here about not being able to boot without the install disk, which is also my case. I imagine the solution for me should be easy, because I only have a single installed OS on this machine, which is a MacBook Pro 2.1. Here's the result of fdisk -l:
Code:
WARNING: GPT (GUID Partition Table) detected on '/dev/sda'! The util fdisk doesn't support GPT. Use GNU Parted.
Disk /dev/sda: 160.0 GB, 160041885696 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19457 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x00000000
[Code]...
Partition table entries are not in disk order sda4 is a partition that did not appear in the partition overview when I installed the operating system. I thought I'd look for help here while I continue to research the problem myself.

I just switched back to openSUSE from Fedora linux. I made a clean install of openSUSE 11.4, but had trouble when installing the boot loader. For whatever reason the auto-partition tool hadn't given me a /boot partition even though the GRUB configuration referenced it. So I switched the / partition to /boot and the /home to / and now I don't have a /home partition. Is this why my system won't boot past the splash screen in "normal" mode, but boots fine in "failsafe"?

Okay I did a clean network install on 11.2 on my test machine.Old gateway box but it had min requirements. It will load completely into failsafe mode but will not complete a normal boot option. The default Green background images comes up and the cursor comes up, but I let it sit for 30 minutes and nothing. I did a hard reboot, still hung on cursor and green back ground. Booted again but this time choose failsafe, boot up completely. Am I doing something wrong? I have installed many many version of Linux in the past never had a problem like.
