Ubuntu :: 10.10 Reports All Workspaces As "Workspace 1"

I'm trying to make every workspace its own workspace basically including the bottom panels and their windows, e.g firefox, gimp etc... I want every workspace to to truly be its own workspace. If I open a window in work space 2, it should stay only appear in workspace 2. 1.How would I do that using compiz? I'd love to be able to have my virtualbox windows, go specifically to workspace 3. 2.Whats the best way to have a program go to a specific workspace using compiz?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a workspace switcher on one of my panels, and it has ten columns by one row. However, when Ubuntu first starts up, it only shows four workspaces. By screwing around with the settings, I eventually get it to show all ten, but it would be nice if I didn't have to do that. What is going on?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI got the following task from my boss. I have to find out if there is some alternative tool for create reports from Squid except SARG. Now, we use SARG, but my boss told to me, that the main problem of SARG is, that SARG generate huge amount files, which cause problems during migration our servers. He told to me the following condition for change of current tool (SARG):
* standard package of Debian
* generate less amount of files, optimal is to save reports to the database
So I would like to ask you if you know about some tool (I can not find some by google)... and the best would be if you told to me some practical experiences.
I believe I may have found a bug in Unity. Under the right circumstances an application will jump from the workspace where I left them to my current workspace. This is most noticeable with VirtualBox. I built an Ubuntu 11.04 virtual machine so that I could test out new packages before I push them out to the rest of my machines. But the window for the virtual machine constantly appears in my current workspace. It may take a few minutes, or 30 minutes, but it will happen.
I can kind of understand it if a new window appears, but at least with VirtualBox, this happens on a running virtual machine seemingly randomly.
Running Ubuntu 10.04 64bit.Is there a way to setup each workspace to have different icons on each workspace. Example:
Workspace 1 = Internet icon stuff (IM, Browsers, Etc...)
Workspace 2 = Multimedia icons (Video Editors, Music Clients)
Is there any way to have workspaces on multiple rows without the workspace switcher added to a panel? I have limited screen space so i want to try and remove any unnecessary items. I have tried using a drawer, but the workspace application is not loaded until the drawer is opened once. Also note I am not running compiz as the computer is a netbook.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop. I've got access to both the Netbook Edition and the Desktop Edition, so I tried booting into the Desktop Edition since I prefer to use this.
Within it, I cannot use Alt-Tab to move between multiple windows. I don't have access to moving between workspaces; rather weirdly, I can move a window to a different workspace by right clicking on the application and selecting to move it to a different workspace but I cannot use Ctrl-Alt-Right or Left to move between workspaces, nor can I use Ctrl-Alt-Shift-Left or Right to move a window from one workspace to another.
I have checked the Keyboard Shortcuts under the System->Preferences side. Alt-Tab, Ctrl-Alt-Right/Left and Ctrl-Alt-Shift-Right/Left are all set as the commands for Moving between Windows using the popup window, moving to the right/left workspace and moving a window to the right/left workspace respectively.
I've seen a lot of people saying that they have problems when they've got compiz installed and alt-tab causes problems with this, but I don't have compiz installed.
Since I used sudo apt-get upgrade -d from my old 10.04 Netbook Edition, am I missing packages to correctly run the Desktop Edition?
Note: Within the Netbook Edition, I can use multiple workspaces and Alt-Tab does work, but the UI is very slow and causes the system to lag whenever I open an application.
I have been told it is possible to alt tab programs on different workspaces. The people that have done this on kde 3. How do you enable this on kde 4? I would really like to use this feature.

I am running ubuntu 9.04, and need to change the number of workspaces to 1 from the command line. I am using this command in a script:gconftool --set -t int /apps/metacity/general/num_workspaces 1I can confirm in gconf-editor that the value is changed, but I can still scroll over to the second workspace with the mouse wheel
View 9 Replies View RelatedI had named all my workspaces earlier today, and it was great help in organizing my workflow. However, I went to turn on some compiz effects (to improve the visual ergonomics of my work environment), and now I notice workspaces are acting a bit strange.I can no longer drag a window onto one of the workspace boxes in the bottom right to move the window. Also, if I left click the workspaces pane and go into properties, I can now only change the rows and columns, not the workspace names. This is a bit strange, and I see no reason that enabling compiz should cause this kind of problem.I can right click a title bar and send the window to a different workspace that way, but because they're not named, it's hard for me to organize my desktop this way
View 1 Replies View Relatedin Ubuntu 9.10 I was able to move windows on the fly between workspaces, but now I can't in Lucid! I should right click on a window and tell it to move right or left. I hate to do that!
View 2 Replies View RelatedHow can I make workspaces have names under 10.04? Under 9.10 I can given different workspaces different names, under 10.04 I can't. Workspace-switcher-preferences has less options.
View 1 Replies View RelatedSo I upgraded from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.4, and the first thing I notice is that I can't drag the windows to other workspaces except from the small box down on the left, which is too small and annoying for me, I want to drag the window from the title bar. I can't find where to change that in the system, does anyone know how?
View 1 Replies View RelatedCan't switch between workspaces anymore. Not by shortcuts, neither by clicking. I cn move windows to another workspace, but i just can't acces them.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI normally don't switch between workspaces. In older versions I had done it just to try it out. And the files that were on the desktop in Workspace #1 were not there in any of the other Workspaces, but now in 10.04 they are. Is this the way it should be? Or is there something I need to set to have a clean desktop in the other Workspaces?
View 6 Replies View RelatedSwitching workspaces in Sauerbraten
just love the game, I play when things are quiet on the system. but I can not figure out to swap workspaces. the ctr-alt-right/left doesn't work in Sauerbraten. I run it in it's own workspace, but when I need to change to the other workspace with all my "work" apps I have to exit the game (sometimes right in the middle of a roll) and then I can switch to the work workspace
needless to say, in the middle of lost, level 9 or any others. it's a bummer to have to quit out to deal with a 30 second issue.
Just like the title said, I was fooling around with different workspaces - seeing if I could close a program in one workspace while working in another - and I seem to have either deleted or hidden all of my workspaces!I've already tried the gconf commands and they don't seem to work at all.I'm running 11.04.TYOK... a quick update. I can get to my other workspaces using ctr+alt+ right arrow, so the workspaces are still there, I've just hidden or removed the switcher applet!

could someone tell me how to add more workspaces in Unity?
I know that there is a way to do this with the keyboard, but I have grown quite fond of having my four workspaces showing in my utility (task) bar at the top of the screen. How do I re-enable this?
View 4 Replies View RelatedMultiple workspaces don't seem to work on this computer in Ubuntu 9.04, though they have in virtually every other distribution (including Ubuntu 8). The relevant specs of this computer:
* 2.0 GHz Pentium 4
* 512 MB RDRAM (arrrggghhh!)
* ATI Radeon 7500 64 MB Graphics Card
I've tried other steps, including adding the Workspace Switcher applet. Indeed it is present. However, clicking on another workspace does absolutely nothing, and "sending" a window to, say, Workspace 3, just makes it disappear. Likewise, CompizConfig Settings Manager seems to be useless in this situation too. I have had success with multiple virtual desktops in almost every other distribution of Linux on this computer, usually right out of the box.
I'm wondering if anyone is aware of a way to cycle through workspaces at a set interval.. whether it be a screen saver or other wise
View 3 Replies View RelatedI tried to check how many workspaces my desktop could have at once, and it got stuck at 36. Now i can't reduce the number. When I click the workspace switcher, and press "preferences", the preferences screen flickers like crazy, and I can't change it. The window title bars and borders are altso gone, but gnome is running. I don't have compiz running.
Is there any way of reducing the amount of workspaces, through gconf, or terminal?
I have a lot of application scheduled to load at startup (GoldenDict, Tomboy Notes, Evolution Mail, Liferea, etc.) and I'd like some of them to appear on the workspaces different from the default. I have Ubuntu 10.10 with Gnome and Compiz effects. Is there a way to do this without a lot of mess?
