Ubuntu :: 10.10 (64) Hangs On Boot With USB Card Reader

Apr 18, 2011

My PC is an Intel Core-i7-950 with 8GB RAM. The motherboard is an Intel Extreme, DX580G. Ubuntu (64) 10.10 is the only OS run on this system, and uses the entire hard-disk.

Today, I purchased an internal USB card reader that connects to the USB socket on the motherboard. Once I connected it, the PC started hanging on boot. When it hangs, there is nothing but a non-blinking, still cursor on the top left corner of the screen.

Earlier I had set the Grub2 boot delay to '0', and therefore I guess I do not get to see any messages or the Grub2 menu.

The story is the same with an external USB card-reader. If I connect the external card-reader and try to boot, the PC hangs in the manner described above.

If I disconnect the internal / external USB card-reader, everything is normal.

The following web-page describes the problem in the manner I can understand. But it does not provide a permanent solution.

Below I have listed all the hardwire of the PC, as obtained from "lshw". The italic part at the bottom deals with the IN-WIN module. I suspect that it may have to do something with the "emulated scsi-host" thing, of which I just know nothing about.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Nikon S570 And Card Reader On MBP 5.5

I just bought a new Nikon S570 digital camera and I was trying to mount the camera via the USB cable in order to get the pictures off of it but either a) I don't know how to mount the camera properly or b) there is some sort of compability or program that I need to install in order to get it to work. According to lsusb it the camera shows up as being connected:

Code:
Bus 004 Device 003: ID 05ac:8213 Apple, Inc.
Bus 004 Device 002: ID 0a5c:4500 Broadcom Corp. BCM2046B1 USB 2.0 Hub (part of BCM2046 Bluetooth)

Bus 001 Device 002: ID 05ac:8507 Apple, Inc.
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
So maybe i just need to know how to mount it so I can access the files?

Also, I tried to plug the SD card into the built in card reader but it never showed up either. Do I need to do anything different to get the SD card to mount too?

I've recently purchased a Lenovo Ideapad z470, and installed Debian Wheezy amd64 on it first thing. I was pleased to find that almost everything worked "out of the box." Hardware :: Get Rid Of SD Card Reader Included In 3G Modem?

Mar 4, 2011

I'm using USB 3G modem and it has SD card reader embedded.
I am also using USB hard drive as boot device. It is a Netgear WNDR 3700 router.
I am posting it in here because it is a general question, not really associated with embedded installations.
When loading the system from power up my HDD get's /dev/sda assigned and my modem SD card reader: /dev/sdb [although there's no SD card inserted].
But when booting after restart hard drive is sdb and modem is sda. Thanks to that I get kernel panic and all is over. I have to manually reboot.
I cannot use initrdfs so I can't use UUID/LABEL to identify the device.
Is there any way I could stop this SD card reader from loading?
I believe it uses usb mass storage driver, just as my hdd.

This is from the boot log Code...

Hardware :: Locate Internal SD Card Reader?

Apr 16, 2010

I have a new computer with with an SSD internal drive, built in SD card reader, and USB expansion ports.If I populate media in all slots and type "fdisk -l" I get a listing of the partitions for the external USB ports but fdisk doesn't report anything for the internal media. If I unplug the USB drives and type fdisk it just goes to the command line. If I type "df" it locates the partitions for the internal SSD drive but doesn't report anything for the media in the built in reader. If I type "mount" the same thing.

I've looked in /dev/ but I can't find anything that looks like something I can mount. I'd expect something like sda1 or something similar but it's not there. The contents of /media/ do report something called "card" but going there and typing "ls" doesn't get me any result. There is also an entry for "mmc1" but it too doesn't report anything.

Ubuntu :: Create An Udev Rule To Stop Card Reader From Being Initialized

Jan 24, 2010

I have a netbook (MSI Wind U100 rebrand) that has one of those card readers built into the handrest. The thing is I've never used it once, and it keeps popping up in powertop as waking the cpu when it should just shut up and be quiet.Aside from breaking open the case and tearing it out, the immediate solution is to browse to /sys/bus/usb/devices/usb1/1-6/ and pipe 1 to the file remove. That disables it until system reboot or resume, at which point I have to do it all over again.

Code:

$ echo 1 | sudo tee /sys/bus/usb/devices/usb1/1-6/remove

Now I'd like to create an udev rule to make it not get initialized at all. A quick Google search found me this article on creating udev rules, and after toying about with the udevadm tool I managed to produce the attributes/properties of the device.

Code:

zorael@lethe:/sys/bus/usb/devices/usb1/1-6$ udevadm info -a -p $(pwd)

Udevadm info starts with the device specified by the devpath and then walks up the chain of parent devices. It prints for every device found, all possible attributes in the udev rules key format. A rule to match, can be composed by the attributes of the device and the attributes from one single parent device.

looking at device '/bus/usb/devices/usb1/1-6':

KERNEL=="1-6"
SUBSYSTEM=="usb"
DRIVER=="usb"
ATTR{configuration}=="CARD READER

Ubuntu :: Epson FX-2175 (dot-matrix Printer) And SD Card Reader Installation?

Jan 3, 2011

I have installed ubuntu 10.10 netbook remix on my eMachines 350 netbook.. so far, it works good aside from the printer and the built-in SDcard reader.

1. I have tried installing the database driver for epson( dot-matrix printers) but i was out of luck until i have installed the SCP(sorry if I forgot/misrepresented the name) driver which made my printer working.. However, the print quality is a total mess.. broken letters and etc.. (ribbon is brand new) Can someone tell me how to solve this?

2. Having said that I finally solved issue #1, and the printer prints the way it should be, how would I configure my netbook to print wirelessly via a wifi router.. (I was able to do this with windows computers wherein a printer is shared on the network) however, I find it hard to do this in ubuntu since I am not that familiar with this. Note that when I go to system>admin>printing it shows the windows 7 computers in the homegroup but when I search for a shared printer, nothing shows up.. (I know, I'm a NOOB!)

3. This is the last one, I would feel great if we could at least solve this together.. the built in CARD READER is not working on my eMachines EM350 netbook..

You must load these two modules to work with card reader.
First : Remove the card from the Reader!
AS superuser type in console :
1. /sbin/modprobe tifm_core <enter>
2. /sbin/modprobe tifm_sd <enter>

If you want to automate these modules loading do the following :
edit the /etc/modprobe.conf file
add these :
alias mmc_core tifm_core
alias mmc_card tifm_sd

General :: Disable Built In Card Reader In Debian?

Dec 11, 2010

I am trying to disable the built-in card reader in my MBP (5,3) running Debian testing. I've noticed that powertop lists the card reader as a major contributor of wake up events and would like to disable it as I rarely need to read SD cards.

I found this with "dmesg":

scsi 6:0:0:0: Direct-Access APPLE SD Card Reader 1.00 PQ: 0 ANSI: 0

and this from "sg_scan -i":

/dev/sg2: scsi6 channel=0 id=0 lun=0 [em]
APPLE SD Card Reader 1.00 [rmb=1 cmdq=0 pqual=0 pdev=0x0]

I don't know where to find the device in /proc and there are no modules loaded for this device (I'm guessing it has support compiled into the kernel).

So, ideally, I would like to be able to enable/disable this device without a kernel recompile. Is this possible?
